My doctor's been recommending Delsym. It's OTC, you only take it twice a day, and it works better than anything I've ever used (including prescription cough meds). Can't hurt to give it a try. The original is orange-flavored--not delicious, but definitely better than most cough meds. And I believe they've come out with a grape flavor now.

I have that too! Aggrevating! I have just been taking cough medicine before I go to sleep. Seems to work for the most part....although last night I woke up at 3 coughing, and took just a bit more..it sure makes the tummy warm! "/

My 6 yr old has it too....she coughs so hard that can't have a full tummy or she'll throw up! Her eyes are all bloodshot from coughing so hard . I've been giving her Benylin Nighttime (for kids) ....it seems that it might be time release because she has several bad coughing fits during the night. I gave it to her today (stayed home fro school) since she wassn't about to use any heavy machinery (yup, they put that on kid's medicine too!!). SHe still coughs, but at least its only every few minutes and she can catch her breath. Here's hoping for a good night of sleep...for us all!

Someone here at work mentioned peppermint candy in whiskey but didn't know recipe; has anyone ever heard of this?

I don't know about the whiskey, but wintergreen lifesavers are AMAZING. Forgot to mention those--we were all sick at mom's funeral, and DD got a bag of wintergreen LS, and none of us coughed during the service. They truly were 'life savers' that day.

Tahoe, how long have you had the cough? A dry cough that lasts more than 2 weeks maybe an indication of stomach problem. If you had it for more than 2 weeks and you normally cough when laying down, you'd need to go and have a check up.

That happened to me awhile back and found out that I had acid reflux.

Other than that, Ricola cough drops are soothing for your throat without burning it. Also, try to get fresh peppermint, crush it and mix it in with your favorite tea. Drink it warm. It will also help congestion. If not, Peppermint Tea is good too.

Drink lots of water. I can't believe how much of a difference that can make. I sometimes get a dry cough - or a nighttime cough that just doesn't go away.

Someone told me to start drinking more water - and it worked! Not pop or coffee - just plain old water.

If I am somewhere and I start to cough (like a tickle in my throat) I put one of those Listerine melt-away breath things in my mouth. It stops it right away. Sometimes I get that cough going and I finally gag. Those strips are a godsend when I feel that coming on in a store or public place.

I agree with drinking more water but, that might have you up during the night to run to the bathroom. So, drink water but even as important as that...add moisture to your room air. Use a vaporizor or a cool mist humidifier. If you don't have one of those, wet a towel, ring it out and place it on the floor next to my bed. Every night during the winter or anytime the heat is on, I put a wet/rung out hand towel over the heat vents next to my bed. It works wonders. Good luck. Dry coughs are a real pain.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions. Two years ago I was diagnosed with acid reflux but have not been bothered with it lately. Can you still cough when you are not having "burping" problems?
