DH and I are celebrating out 12th wedding anniversary a day early (tonight) and he chose Halibut Puttanesca as the main course. I was thinking a spinach salad with balsamic, but what sort of starch? I have tons of options:
Cous Cous
Pasta (many shapes & sizes)
rice (brown, white, basmati, red)
or potatoes
What would be your preference with a spicy garlicy, tomatoey, olivey sauce?
Alexa: How about a Chef's Salad , with all the goodies. I make it with Crispy Iceberg Lettuce,Feta , Sharp Provolone, Ham , Prociutto, Pepperoni, Anchovies, Tomatoes and Sweet Onions. Sprinkle on some Garlic Powder and Parmesan Cheese. Then the Dressing of your choice. I use Zesty Italian.
I like Ice Berg instead of Spinach and Romaine, because it's Crispy, Crunchy.
But that's me. Don't forget the Garlic Bread, for Starch. Save me some. Lou
Angel hair?? The stuff is so thin, you don't need a lot of sauce to make it happen. Or a garlic grilled bruschetta?
Sounds delicious. My fisherman came back empty-handed after 5 hours on the bay. I was hoping for some winter flounder or a young striped bass but no luck. We're having (canned) salmon cakes tonight.
I would stay with a Mediterranean style side. Pasta does not do it for me with halibut.....so I would do a saffron rice or a lemon Cous Cous. Another very interesting option would be Sharon CB's "salted" mini potatoes ala the Canary Islands.
Do a search on the forum but unfortunately I think they will come up on the WFD thread.
Maybe Ann T ( she made them recently) or Sharon will see this...I forget the name in Spanish
Alexa: This seems similar to the Bacala Stew ( Dried Cod ) we had on Christmas Eve. It was Baked in the oven with Crushed Tomatoes, Olives Onions ,Capers, Garlic Cloves, Parsley and all the Good Spices.
I haven't made this for many years.
We had Linguini on the side and Garlic Bread for dipping. Also a simple salad with Tomatoes , Lettuce and Onions. Lou
Thanks for all the great suggestions, I think any of them would have worked well. However, DH decided on Garlic Risotto for the side. You could have knocked me over with a feather!
Ayway, I will keep this whole thread with the Halibut Puttanesca recipe for inspiration the next time I make it.
Yikes! Sorry for not posting the recipe initially!
I am posting the recipe as I found it - I actually subbed canned tomatoes for the jarred sauce the recipe called for and incerased the spices a bit, but I kept true to the ingredients. Also, I sauteed the garlic for just a bit, then added the capers and smashed some with my wooden spoon before adding the tomatoes and olives and other stuff. _______________________________________________________ Halibut Puttanesca Copyright, 2006, Robin Miller, All rights reserved Prep Time: 5 min Inactive Prep Time: 0 min Cook Time: 10 min Level: Easy Serves: 4 servings Ingredients  1 1/2 cups tomato sauce, left over from Spaghetti and Meatballs or storebought  4 cloves garlic, minced  1/2 cup stuffed green olives, chopped  3 tablespoons drained capers  1/2 cup red wine  2 teaspoons anchovy paste  4 (5-ounce) halibut fillets  Salt and ground black pepper  1/4 cup chopped fresh basil leaves Directions Add tomato sauce to a saucepan. Oh yum, that sounds amazing! I've copied and pasted to my to try file! I'm trying to get into halibut more, but dh is a bit resistant. However, this sauce would light his fire! LOL
