Mini farmer's market.

I cleaned out the refrigerator just last night. I did away with some old jams/jellies, salsa, chilies, butter chunks left from recipes, the all natural almond butter no one ever liked enough to eat, old mayonnaise, a few jars of mustard with a dab left, and some other unloved condiments and wrinkled produce. And wiped the shelves! All to make room for my first farmer's market haul.

Alice and I were on our way home down the main drag and spotted the mini farmer's market set up in a strip mall parking lot. Though it was raining, we pulled in. The house was bare of produce. I think we hit almost every stand and made a small purchase. There were only about 8 vendors. They used to be there on Sunday mornings but have switched to Tuesday afternoons this season. The primary FM sets up downtown on Thursday and Sunday mornings. I rarely make it to that one as it is off my path. I'm glad to see this one though Alice is quick to point out there are no bargains! Everything is usually more expensive than the grocery store or the road stands. I have gotten bargains with "case" purchases.

We came home with peaches, strawberries, beets, snap peas, tomatoes, and carrot cupcakes.

Sounds like a fine haul to me!

Today I got an email from a nearby organic farm that is now starting their season. And get this....they will deliver! Free if order is over $20 and $1 extra if under $20. And they have pickup in 2 locations, one which is only a couple of miles from my office. You email or call the farm with your order and they bag it up and put your invoice on the bag.

This week they have squash, beets, baby celery, Swiss chard, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, green onions, green garlic, herbs, and herb plants. Yes, they are higher than the grocery store, but not that much, and this is organic and local - only about 7-10 miles as the crow flies. I will be away this weekend, but I let them know I planned to order next week.

Delivery would be wonderful if I could find a farm group to do that. I stopped driving more than a year ago and this makes going out to farm stands challenging, though I have done so on my bicycle. I don't mind the ride but the narrow country roads, no shoulder, and speeding trucks make it a bit breath taking.

Right now it's just Alice and I and soon it will just be me. Alice will go away to college in September.

I always thought that festival would be great! I never made it over there, though. One summer we did go on a driving trip that took us through some awesome agricultural areas of CA, like the massive hops vines, artichokes fields, vineyards, etc. It makes me hungry, just thinking about it. A few years back, I happened on a really good book, very well written, called "A Garlic Testament: Seasons on a Small New Mexico Farm," by Stanley G. Crawford. It's a U. New Mexico Press book. I can recommend that for anybody who likes gardening, farming, ethnobotany or even just nature. There is more to garlic than one might think, LOL! We have the world's stupidest excuse for a farmers' market I have ever seen.... It's held on Tuesday from 4 PM to 6 PM....in a baked or wind swept parking lot next to a couple plot of land where a building was torn down.....and they charge the participants a yearly fee for participating. 4 or 5 years ago it was held around the square and it was so easy to just walk around and pick up stuff while you were going to the bank or drug store or whatever. And there was a n unofficial Saturday morning market in the parking lot of a car dealership....under some big trees planted at the edge....no fees paid to the city.....somehow that was shut down. I envy you all your lovely farmers' markets....you might think that in the middle of the "bread basket" there would be a decent farmers market....I know several "farmers" who take their produce to other towns for their markets.

A little late, but how about this recipe: Apple Cookies 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. ground cloves 1/2 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg 2 c. flour 1/2 c. butter 1 1/3 c. brown sugar 1 egg 1 c. chopped nuts 1 c. chopped apples 1/4 c. milk or apple juice Glaze: 1 1/2 c. confectioners sugar, 1 T. soft butter, 2 1/2 T. cream or milk, 1/4 tsp. vanilla In large mixing bowl, cream butter, sugar and egg. Mix flour, spices salt and soda and add alternately with juice or milk to creamed mixture. Fold in nuts and chopped apple. Drop by teaspoonful on greased baking sheet. Bake 400 degrees 11 min. or at 375 14 min. Cool and apply glaze. It was posted by dottieq on a cookie thread some time ago. I'm thinking about making some for my church's Applefest and making the glaze a maple or caramel glaze.

I keep forgeting about ours - all of the small ones are on Saturday mornings only around here. That delivery would be great. And Barnmom, I'm with you on that bicycle and speeding trucks!

Fortunately, Harry's farmers market aka Whole Foods around the corner is open all days and keeps the great produce the same as when it was a farmers market. Very good and fresh with a good selection too.

Kevin went to the Culver City FM this Tuesday and got a really good selection of mushrooms, along with spinach, tomatoes, green leaf lettuce, and spinach. I told him to look for olives and olive oil (which I usually find), but I guess he didn't find any. The market it just a few blocks from where he works, and so it's easy for him to walk over there on a break. I'm going to have one of the tomatoes today at lunch, and I trust that it will not be sprouted.

Since I moved, I've been going to the local FM. I didn't like it a long time ago because it had been taken over by non-farmers, but I was very pleased to see that the city has again regulated it and requires certification. It's twice a week and the prices are great. We've been eating lots of cherries every day. There is a good seller of olives and hummus flavored with things like jalapeno and cilantro. His olives are delicious - mixed lots of herbs and fresh garlic.

Hey there Gina! I am going to check out the mini one close to me again this coming Tuesday. I hope there will be more vendors and that the weather will be sunny.

I'm lucky enough to live in the garden part of the Garden State and there are still lots of farms around me. Several owned by friends who have stands, so I get most things there in season. There are the big farmers markets like Colombus and Trenton Farmers market that we go to occasionally. Colombus has some asian stands and such that have stuff our regular stands don't. Plus seafood stands and a giant flea market. Trenton Farmers market is near Christys work so she goes there sometimes at lunch time.

Theresa thanks for reminding me about Local Harvest. I hadn't checked it out this year and I was glad to see there are quite a few more local farms listed now, including a number of organic meat farms. Sad to say a few previous farms are no longer participating. Btw, it's LocalHarvet.ORG... org not .com.
