With all of the discussions recently about making ice cream, here is an opportunity to test your/my seriousness about it with an inexpensive maker. I'm going to pick one up when it's available on Wednesday.

I have had good experiences with Aldi's Crofton brand.

Not familiar with that one. The Cuisinart one that is so well reviewed and used by so many (our family included) is available at Williams-Sonoma now with a second bowl included (the best value) and now at Sur la Table in bright colors. I've had mine for several years now.

You can also do it the really old fashioned way -- the same method that has long been used to make sorbet. Just pour the mixture into a baking dish, and set that into your freezer. Also, you will need a heavy glass or metal bowl, an electric hand mixer, and a bowl of ice big enough for the first bowl to sit in. Put the heavy glass or metal bowl and the beater attachments for the hand mixer into the freezer at the same time as the ice cream mix to chill them. When its almost but not quite fully frozen, use a fork to break it up into small lumps about the size of a nickle or a little less. Then put it back into the freezer about 10 minutes to set up a bit again. Now, working as quickly as possible, take the pre-chilled heavy bowl out of the freezer,and set it in a bath of ice cubes in the 2nd larger bowl. Quickly transfer the ice cream mixture into the chilled bowl, and beat it as much as possible with the electric mixer ONLY until the lumps are broken up, and it begins to whip up a bit. Then, back into the freezer for another 15 to 30 minutes, until its not at all "melty" but still a little soft. Repeat the beating/whipping process several times -- the idea is to whip as much air into it to make it creamy and fluffy as possible, without melting it too much at each whipping. The chilled bowl, the ice bath, and the chilled beaters help, but beware that the very act of beating it creates friction between the bowl and beaters, which makes heat, so this process is a balancing act between beating in air and melting the ice cream. Done right, which isn't at all hard to do with just a little practice, this method does work, albeit it will never be quite as fluffy as commercial ice creams you are used to, which not only incorporate a large volume of air into the mix using specialized equipment, but which also generally use gums and stabilizers which prevents the product from melting and turning liquid as fast as a pure, cream and milk only product will. I have a Simac Il Gelataio 1600 like the one I found on eBay linked below. I've owned a few different machines over the years and am happy with the Simac despite two cons. 1. The unit is very heavy. Combined with its size, it's awkward to move around. I don't have a spot large enough in my kitchen to dedicate just to the Simac so I can't store it on my counter. When I use it, it needs to be moved out of, and then back into, the garage. 2. The bowl isn't removable for cleaning. Some Simac models do have a removable bowl. On the positive side, the thing is built like a tank. I can imagine it lasting for many more years to come. Ice cream comes out great every time, and it's incredibly easy to use. I have a Deni Ice Cream Maker and these are recipes from the user's manual. I'm like compumom, I've never used any of the commercial products and I'm surprised there isn't a recipe for adding yogurt instead of cream/half-and-half/milk. Have you checked the web site of the mix product you are wanting to use for recipes? Perhaps there's one that includes yogurt. (Grainlady note: This is NOT like regular ice cream. It's got quite a bit of "bite" from the sour cream - what my hubby calls "adult" ice cream ;-). CHOCOLATE FROZEN YOGURT 2 c. plain or vanilla flavored yogurt (I'd suggest vanilla flavored) 1 c. sour cream 1/4 c. light corn syrup (I use Lyle's Golden Syrup) 3/4 c. sugar 1/3 to 1/2 c. baking cocoa (I'd suggest you start with the lower amount and add more the next time if you think it needs more. If you are using Hershey's 100% Cacao Special Dark Cocoa, you may want even less than 1/3 cup. I've also added some Cacao Nibs to this recipe and only 2 T. Special Dark Cocoa Powder.) Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Beat well. Place in the refrigerator (or freezer for faster chilling) and chill thoroughly. Follow standard instructions for making ice cream. Note: Leave out the cocoa, reduce the sugar to 1/4 c. and add chocolate chips or peanut butter chips, or any other yummy things you can think of. We've added chopped Cherry Mash bars to the recipe. Butterfingers would also be a good addition. I've also made it with homemade yogurt made with Chocolate Morning Moo's (a whey-based milk substitute) and drained homemade kefir curd - drained to the consistency of sour cream. So use your imagination. ORANGE FROZEN YOGURT 3/4 c. evaporated skim milk 4 T. orange juice 4 oz. egg substitute (such as Egg Beaters - do NOT use raw eggs) 1-1/2 t. plain gelatin 2-1/2 c. vanilla flavored fat-free yogurt 1 T. orange zest 1 c. sugar dash salt 1. In a small sauce pan, sprinkle the gelatin over the evaporated skim milk. Warm the mixture (do NOT allow to boil) to dissolve the gelatin, stirring if necessary. 2. Combine remaining ingredients in a blender or food processor. Mix well. Add the milk/gelatin and continue processing to ensure proper mixing. 3. Chill thoroughly. 4. Follow standard instructions for making ice cream....

Well, I learned something in the preview of Jeni's book on Amazon (and ordered the book to thank her): Like the Sicilian gelato, she uses starch to stabilize the frozen yoghurt. I have tapioca starch! I'm going to try that. The book also has the best frozen yoghurt instructions I've seen. They're for a more commercial grade of frozen yoghurt, but might be worth the trouble if I want to make a serious effort for a lot of company. Being able to make ahead and store in the freezer would be a boon. Unlike Jeni, I'm trying to reduce the richness of the dessert, rather than boost it, and her ice cream flavors sound a bit muddy for me, but the depth she goes into on techniques for storing and serving should be very useful.

Well I'm jealous because that isn't one of the specials our Aldi's has for this week. I printed a coupon off their website but I doubt it will do me any good. If they don't have it, they just don't have it.

Cathy, I have the Cuisinart model you linked to. I love it; it's great. I checked out my local Aldi's yesterday and they didn't have anything except a sandwich maker and some bath mats. I hope those of you looking for the ice cream maker can find it! If not, the Cuisinart is highly recommended by me. I got mine last year at Costco (I think). Well, you know, I've slept since then!

I have this one, it works fine and since my kitchen is separate from my living room, I don't notice a problem with noise. I know some others have said it's really noisy and that was bothersome.

Cathy, LOL, you're right. I'm a smidge closer to Penzey's than you. And since my sister lives in Jax, I just call her & she goes & buys whatever I want and brings it to me when she comes to visit Mom. How cool is that?

My Aldi's did have the ice cream maker even though it wasn't in their ad. I have an ice cream maker I got several years ago but I seem to have misplaced everthing except the part you leave in the freezer. How worthless that is!

I'll be making lemon verbena sorbet as soon as my plant grows a few more leaves.

Cathy, I have just one word for you... ENABLER! You bad bad girl! Guess what followed me home from Aldi this morning? Yep, this ice cream maker. I was given a lovely brown vintage Waring years ago by a friend when she moved (the same one that is staying with me now actually), but the lid cracked and I had to make an ugly repair with something called plastic surgery. It also requires lots of ice and salt and that's just too much to mess with, and I hate buying that stuff every time I want to make ice cream! I never use the thing because of that! I've long wanted one with the freezable container... ever since the Cuisinarts first came out. I debated hard about buying this, but went back in after buying and loading groceries into the car... I just couldn't resist for 20 dollars. I thought about waiting, but I know Aldi.... once they are gone, they are gone, and may never come back. I plugged it in to hear the motor, and it doesn't seem very powerful, but maybe it doesn't need to be. I love the ingredient fill hole... just hope cat hair doesn't fly in when I'm making ice cream! I'll report back after I use it.

Sorry, I haven't been back for a bit nad just saw this. Mine is like the one annie1992 posted a link to and we got it at WS with the extra bowl They seem to run that special every year near Mother's Day and Father's Day. It's really nice to have two. My son makes 2 different kinds of sorbet most of the time he pulls it out. He's made it for 3 friends who got their wisdom teeth out and I loved that.

The ones at Sur la Table are the same, also on sale but come in bright colors instead of with a second bowl. I'd have to get one if I didn't have the white one.

Now, if you want a FREE ice cream maker, you can get a KA mixer with a free ice cream bowl attachment -- their current rebate offer. ;-)

Cathy, I forgot that you didn't have a KA... Do you have a Cuisinart isntead? I think the reason I haven't gotten any attachments for the KA, including the ice cream maker, is because if the KA died I'd be forced to get another just to use the attachments. Too bad they aren't universal!

Yes, I did have a place for the old ice cream maker (though with the addition of a blender and toaster oven, I've had to kick the vacuum sealer off the counter and into the closet)... but what should I do with the old one? It does work, and it matches the ugly brown on my fabulous vintage food processor so I can't just throw it away, can I? I'll at least hang onto it until I decide whether or not to "marry" this new Crofton contraption.

Hopefully, some others of you here will take advantage of the deal and post your reviews of this thing! It is one heck of a price!

My Aldi's didn't advertize the ice cream maker but had them... I bought one, brought it home, washed it, put the bowl in the freezer... Now what?

The only fruits I have are kiwi and cantaloupe... And I have no cream or half & half.... LOL

Guess I'll just have to make a trip to the store tomorrow and get some stuff... That is, after I see to hubby's needs, cut the grass, see to hubby's needs, plant two trays of annuals, see to hubby's needs.... Oh wait, this should be in the TGIF thread... lol
