How to transport 100 yr old wedding gown?
Comments (27)I think the trim on the dress may be rayon, could be silk but it looks like the trim on my baby bonnet from 1942. Rayon was used a lot, I have some rayon bias tape that is from 1930's.It is a kind of twisted stuff, you can untwist the cord on the dress I think so made up of several strands & then sewn on with small stitches over the cord going in direction of the twist so they can't even be seen. The chiffon type fabric is used in doll clothes in late 1800's & early 1900's. Might talk to someone who collects old dolls & show them pics. They could probably identify all the materials used. Better check on those flour sacks before you wash them & find out value try "textiles", 'kitchen" "ADVERTISING"try that 1 1st. Different books & different sites call things by different names. Lovely gown. One idea would be to get photo of the wedding couple & add a piece of gown(taken from back so won't show) & put under glass around 1 side of photo along with another item if you have it,(piece of jewelry she wore- wedding announcement in paper, maybe bit of flour sack from 1 not in such great shape) use an acidfree piece of heavy stock to mount all this in a nice way to enjoy & put in frame fronted with glass. Hang near the gown. A letter would be nice with her handwriting. That way you would have a little bit of her still with you!! Jan...See Moredone 100% DIY 44 sq bathroom in 100 yr old house
Comments (19)Thanks jruter and oylchick ! On the curtain. The rods I had they are tension rods. I just moved them to the ceiling. My ceiling is about 8.5 feet. The outer curtain is a set from ikea. Mostly decorative but if someone needed in the bathroom while someone was in the shower/bath they would provide privacy if closed. The inner is an 84 inch clear shower curtain. For me that was perfect it hits inside the 20/21 inch( cant remember which it is right now) about 6/7 inches in. Since this is a jetted tub it has an air intake that I didn't want it to cover so it wouldn't get caught if jets where on. This one is from bed bath and beyond. But I found a 96 inch online then measured an realized that covered the air intake so I didn't order it. Honestly, I googled 96 inch clear shower liner and extra long shower curtain liner to find it. The fan over the tub is also a light so I wasn't worried about light. I have hung all my curtains at the ceiling in the house and love the look. Tip most ikea curtains are 96 inches or 110 and they come with hem tape so they are a great source for full length curtains. But they didn't have a long shower liner. I will try to grab a picture later....See Morenew hvac in lakewood, oh (cleveland) 100 year old home
Comments (6)I have installed Unico high velocity systems in a number of houses (two I lived in and numerous others, including some antebellum and pre-revolutionary houses) and would recommended it. It significantly reduces wall damage and preserves closet space (a common location for forced air duct work). using duct-board in unconditioned spaces to make ducts has some significant advantages. One is it s already insulated, but another is that the lower mass of the duct work reduces system losses to cooling the ducts. More mass meas more heat holding ability. Once the duct warms up, it takes more cooling energy to remove the heat from a heavier duct. Flex duct has some of the same advantages, but a higher pressure loss when air is flowing. It can be accounted for, but it meas more blower HP to move the air. The two customers who used high velocity for heating quickly found the weakness. Faster moving air and the stirring of the room air creates drafts. Not very important in cooling application (remember standing front of a fan to cool off?) but a real drawback for heating. If you put HVAC equipment in unconditioned space, one alternative is to turn it into 'semi conditioned' space by erecting a light weight insulated 'room' around the equipment. Simple lightweight framing and thick foam insulation....See More19 yr old unit with freon leak
Comments (4)Check into local programs for lower interest loans for energy improvements if you will have difficulty paying up-front for a new system. IIRC, Florida seems to be pretty good about that. The trouble is that they might require higher than SEER 14, but that might get you something better than 14 at the 14 price....See Moreclauspkinder
