Update: The AC company that originally put in the Furnace and Coil came out this morning. As others have already suggested they said the blower being capable of feeding a bigger system could not account for the poor cooling that I was seeing. They tested pressure and I think it was 65 140 (although I couldnÂt really see that well) they said everything outside seemed ok and were going to focus on inside. They too seemed to be focusing on the orifice/capillary tube and by process of elimination said it couldnÂt really be anything else. They removed it and said it may be too big, they said it was a number 65 (not sure what that means). The looked on their truck to see if they had another one but didnÂt. On putting the system back together after clearing with vacuum pump the system appeared to be working correctly. They suggested that perhaps the orifice was originally not seated properly. Looking at the gauge they had connected outside the readings were 70 and 225, IÂm assuming that is pressure in and out. Of course they want paying for this work which IÂm going to dispute at least some of it because if was not installed correctly last year then IÂm not sure why I should be paying now. Their argument is that I should have called sooner after the install. My response is that I did call them soon after the system was installed and was told that the upstairs system has to work harder (heater rises, longer ductwork etc) and towards the end of the summer last year it was difficult to really tell how well it was performing. After they left I started taking readings again. The first very positive sign was the air coming out the ducts was high 50s where as before it was high 60s to low 70s. TodayÂs reading are: Time TempOut HumOut TempIn 11:45 75.7 37.9% 71.3 12:50 77.8 36.0% 70.8 13:45 79.2 35.1% 70.7 14:45 81.3 32.8% 70.8 15:35 76.3 35.1% 71.2 I will do take the measurements suggested in the link as soon as I get a humidity sensor.

With the info you have prvided this is only an assumption. You have a two story home besides the finished basement. Your t-stat is on the first floor, which is getting to cold. It sounds like the first floor is satisfied before the second story has a chnce to cool. It souns like an air distribution problem. In a house that size it becomes difficult to balance a one zone system. You balance it by making sure there are dampers in the ducts coming off the main line. The ducts closer to the furnace will receive the air the fastest. If you can cut down on the air downstairs it will send more upstairs, that is assuming that they have sized the ductwork correctly in the first place. Second, did anyone mention zoning the two stories for more even heating and cooling. You can do that with zone valves of have a seperate unit for upstairs. Just a guess but if you are freezing on one floor your system is probably large enough but unbalanced. If you put a larger system in but do nothing about balancing the system nothing will change except an oversize system. They have instraments that measure the air flo at your registers to see what you are getting. If your not getting the air flo then nothing will help. I would start there. Your contractor should have the meter that will tell you if your getting proper flo to heat/cool your area.

First time posting. First time needing to replace AC system. Need to replace 14 year-old Amana systems that were leaking freon last year and not cooling effectively after charging freon. I have two 3.5-ton units downstairs and one 5-ton upstairs. Location: New Orleans, LA. House: 14 years old, 4100 sq feet, 2 stories. We keep A/C at 72 to sleep at night and 75 during day and heat at 68. Summer electricity runs $300-400/month. Started with quotes for Trane systems. Only 1 contractor said he will do Manual J if we proceed with him. The rest said if I go with variable compressors, it is not necessary. Existing ducts are adequate. Quotes include new plenums and 1 new return for master bedroom, dampers to adjust current flow issues. Quotes are for complete AC/furnace systems (model numbers not given). All contractors were from Trane website (listed as comfort specialist) registered w BBB with good reputations.
