Thank God for grandchildren! Aren't they just

the best? I've got 3 y o GS here until Friday for a visit. He and his twin brothers are the only ones that don't live in Tyler. I have 5 grands here today. They're the only people I'll fry chicken for. We had green bean casserole, corn on the cob, black eyed peas (left over from NY's) 2 kinds of macaroni, corn bread and a choc. cake. There are very few left overs. The Tyler son-in-law came up and ate w/ us. Grandchildren can say the funniest things! 2 go back to school tomorrow. The 16 y o GD has taken them down to her house (next door) to play to give me a breather! What a sweet girl! The big boys have built a fire, fed my compost pile and turned it and brought in the mail in addition to playing w/ the 3 y o who thinks they're both Superman! Ya'll had grands this week?

A 5 year old Andrew, 2 1/2 year old Arianna and my 8 Month old Great Nephew Diego. I'm a seragate Granny to my Great Nephew whose Grands are deceased. All absolutely adorable and loveable.

We may travel to Dallas to visit Main Man's Grands next week. He has two Great Grandsons. too!

It breaks my heart that Jake lives so far away....we are saving our money for a trip to Tokyo....hopefully in the Spring.
DDIL sent pictures of Jake, who is now 17 months old, taking the mop and running from her. He is so much fun. Sigh.

Nitida is not shooting yet here. Last year it was putting up tons of shoots in May. I hope it doesn't flower. A couple thin little shoots on the murielae. This is a 3-4 year old seedling-started plant that has hardly topped 2' so far. It's the slowest 'boo I've ever planted. On the other hand, a tissue culture F. rufa I planted weeks ago is already shooting and taking off. A three-year-old decora got top killed over the winter and put up two skinny shoots. One drooped over and snapped. Bah. I have another planting that spent two winters in a tub sunk in the ground, and it is shooting like gangbusters.

I never tried to photograph the shimmering... but did manage to get the Aurora. It was in Sept 05 and very, very late in the night. My wife and I were watching a movie and when it ended, we went outside for some fresh air and the night sky had what we call a moonbow-- a strange glow arching the entire sky, signifying an approaching solar storm. I knew the Aurora was going to kick up so my wife lovingly, if not totally annoyed, got in the car with me and my camera equipment. We went deep into the country-side away from lights and waited. I think we were out there for 2 or so hours-- and NOTHING happened. It was the exact moment that Carrie opened the door that she looked up and said, "Oh my God! Look!" The sky opened up as if on fire and we enjoyed an hour+ long show that was nothing short of a divine experience. It actually made us cry, it was so amazing. To describe it with words or images does no justice. But it was as if a great eye was directly above us. It swirled like a storm and then it would morph and pulse like a blinking eye. It was about half way through that the light pours down to the horizon, surrounding us like huge candles, dancing. The colors changed constantly, revealing reds, purples, greens, yellows, blues and oranges-- pretty much the entire spectrum. When the storm was finally over, the sky continued to pulsate, rhythmically for hours and hours. We stayed until the sun rose. We later found out that it was one of the largest solar storms ever recorded-- and we were so thankful to have seen it. Not that I doubted then, but having seen the Aurora, it was like witnessing the very presence of God. Sorry for all the photos... but I wanted to share them. The cold can be hard to bear if you're not use to it-- but having the chance to see something like this, requiring me to be very far North-- was worth all the shivering! Ryan

PUDDING CUPS: I buy these from time to time for my kids, and the plastic is recycleable in my area, but before I toss in the bin I use them several times each in the summer to make bigger ice cubes for packing coolers or filling the big water jug on outings (or cooling the water for when I am freezing beans/corn), or cut holes in the bottoms and use as little planting pots for some of the seeds I start for my garden. Since they are clear I can tell when cuttings have rooted well. Thanks for coming forward, all of you, and pointing out that although many are striving to be energy wise and cutting back on waste, it is difficult to do it all and still live our lifestyle the way we've been used to. Just today dh took kids into the bigger city close by to buy them shoes, and I asked him to pick up milk on the way home. Pick up milk he did, and he let the clerk bag both jugs! I will speak to him later on this, I don't think he is aware he can ask for his items to NOT be bagged (I do 99% of the shopping in this household, and just assumed he knew how I felt about those plastic bags). Or that anything that size WITH a handle needs no bag! Oh well. I'm still trying to influence change within my own little world (family). kioni

You may just be feeling tired after all the work and stress of renovation. Most likely once you are back to using your new kitchen you will feel more satisfied with it. If not, and something is still grating on you big time a few months down the road, you may be able top go back and change it. If you can't change it (usually because of big expense involved), you may be able to come up with an idea on how to make it work in your favor. I'll give you a couple examples. After building our last home, I didn't like the fact that our bathroom had no window. Also, because the house was adjoined to a large airplane hangar, I had a wall in the main part of our house that was hugely vaulted. To make things worse, the walls were painted white. Stark white. It felt like a hospital room. Well, when looking for some floor tile a couple of years later, I met a lady who had some lovely murals painted on her walls. I contacted the artist, and long story short, I re-painted my walls a soft buttery cream, and she painted garden scenery. The high wall had a wisteria "tree" painted on it with the flowing flowers "climbing" on over a large double set of sliding glass doors in the great room. The bathroom had a large arched "window" painted over the bathtub with a beautiful scene looking "outside" the window. I went so far as to have her paint on a laundry scene on one long laundry room wall where nothing else ever looked right. It was a backyard scene with birds and flowers. In the yard was a clothesline with wash hanging on it. When we put the house up for sale several years later (to get out of the subdivsion), my realtor, though she loved the house, was worried about the personalization of it. I refused to paint over the murals, as it was STILL MY HOUSE, and I loved them. The house sold the day after we lowered our price a bit. A couple who had looked at the house loved it, but it was a bit more than they could afford. They called two hours after we lowered the price and said they were making the drive the next day to buy it. They did, and they love it now as well. Uhhhhh Vannie, ask me on a day when the three boys aren't here! LOL These three are a handful. I watch them while their mother works when they're out of school. They don't go back until next Monday, so I'll have them today, tomorrow and Friday.

Aaron (7) and Jordan (9) are with me til Friday. Taylor (will be two in February) was here too for the first three days, but she kept the boys up at night, so I had to send her home. They are so crazy about their little sister, spoiling her, always hugging and kissing her. Aaron spends a lot of time with her teaching her things and playing games. He even plays dolly with her. Jordan is both their protector. He's such a little man. I can't believe they ate blackeye peas yesterday. They're both really good eaters, but Aaron can be finicky. That's a great improvement over him only eating things that say Kellogg's on the box LOL. Jordan loves veggies and that's great. He's a big jokester, too.

I agree those lil ones are THE BEST thing in my life! They make me smile, love just streams out of me when I see them, and I learn to appreciate the little things in life when I am with them!
We spent 2 1/2 days with our DD and the boys. DD worked Monday so we were there all alone! LOL Drew and I played "cows" many times during the day, Hunter and Drew and I baked chocolate chip cookies, we watched movies, I gave Drew a bath and we just had a blast in general. When it was time for us to leave yesterday I told him Nana has to go home, Drew didn't want us to go. He held my hand and said NOOOooo I don't want you to go. I told him I had to go home and let the puppies out. He looked at me and said "then you'll come right back?" Its over a two hour drive! LOL I told him no I couldn't and he kept asking why? It about broke my heart. He just turned 3 and told me several times during those couple days "I LIKE you Nana!" LOL I cherish time with them!

Love them even when they are older, too! We had a large gathering Christmas Eve with all seven of my kids, and their families. Only two grands and their spouses were unable to come. Some time during the evening, I was just sort of watching the chit-chat and laughter, etc. 22 year old Katie sat down by me, and asked how I felt being responsible for the existence of all these people! I could honestly tell her I felt very proud and happy to call them mine, DIL and SILs too. Now Katie is in Egypt for the rest of her winter break, and planning to snorkel in the Red Sea tonight. They never cease to amaze me!

I agree, Vannie. I don't know what I'd do without the grands. I talked tonight to the 22 year old who is home on leave from the Navy. He's one of the 3 new grandkids I was lucky enough to get when DS married their mom in April. We won't get to see him while he's home, but he called to thank us for the Christmas gifts. I'm very proud to say that I have 5 grandkids now - Mark,22; Raquell, 14; Shannon, 14; Ryan, 11 and Wesley, 10.

Yep - I'm another one who agrees with you, Vannie! We have seven now. 21, 15, 14, 13, 11, 9 and 7. They are all getting so big.

I'm hoping to have one more someday. (Ya Ya...tappin' foot and patiently waaaaiting and waaiting...!LOL)
