You haven't provided detail on what is the problem with your machines that prompted a repair call, what exactly is "worn out." This is a standard Whirlpool-family direct-drive washer, which are largely very reliable. The mechanical design has been on the market for more than 20 years. They should last considerably longer than 4 years, unless they've been somehow abused. A common failure is the drive coupler, which is equivalent to a belt and is an easy and inexpensive repair. Your repairman may simply not want to do the repair. Of course, he also could be correct...

All of a sudden when it gets to the spin cycle it stops. Every couple minutes it trys to run, but can't.

The repairman made an adjustment so now it gets to that point and makes kind of a grinding noise and stops. Then tries again every few minutes.

Are you refering to the 3 piece drive coupler that goes between the motor and the gearcase? If so, I'm with you that this is such a cheap, easy fix he would have done it. I'm going to pull the cabinet to look tomorrow. I'll be very suprised if he's wrong; he has a very good reputation.

There have been listings here over the past two years about TL and FL SQ machines, but not in a while. Just a guess why you don't see many listing about the home Speed Queen line --- their sales volume is no doubt very small even when compared with a boutique brand like Miele. Their dealer network seems to be improving, but selling SQ is no doubt a tough sell. I'm less familar with their TL line, but the FLers are priced at the high end and the feature set is small compared with other machines on the market. As I remember, CR wasn't too kind to the FL SQ either, and that can only hurt. I'd guess their beauty lays within the machine as they use industrial quality underpinings. Unlike Miele which created a new platform to go after the high-end large capacity market (with no doubt a very high R&D/tooling cost), SQ's approach has been to do it on the cheap (from an R&D perspective) and only make minor changes to their existing commercial products. This sounds good, but the fabric care options and details like cycle times are more in line with laundromat options/timing rather than specific high-end home needs. On the TLer side it doesn't appear that any of the SQ machines are Energy Star qualified. Again, it seems to be a recycle of a very old but no doubt highly reliable and well made design. Others have taken new approaches to TLers like GE Harmony/Kenmore Oasis/Whirlpool Cabrio/F&P.

Also the dryer over the last couple weeks has developed an ever increasing pulsating vibration noise, which again the repair tech says is due to an under engineered "high capacity" machine.

I couldn't wait until tomorrow. I pulled the cabinet and motor. The coupler is fine. I really don't "see" anything wrong with the motor (oil leak or burnt wiring). I ordered a new motor for delivery tomorrow. I sure hope that does it, or I'd have wasted 160 bucks on a new motor.

Well it's not the motor. I replaced the motor with a new one and still have the same problem. Think I'll start a new thread.

I have a 2002 Kenmore 90 series Super Capacity Plus washer and matching Kenmore 80 series Super Capacity Plus electric dryer...They have been very reliable for me!
I wash 2-3 full size loads of clothes every other day. The washer and dryer is rated at #20 capacity.

Read on another forum that you are getting a new Speed Queen. How do you like it compared to the Kenmore? They have a great warranty from what I have seen.Built more like washers usedto be built so they would last.
