Dumb Question: Beachfront Property Values in NJ (Sandy)

I have watched so many news reports post-storm about the 'modest' 'middle class' 'small town' areas of beachfront property that were badly damaged in Sandy.

My question to the NE folks is: can waterfront houses really be purchased cheap in that area?! I live in Florida so my view of waterfront values may be skewed. But it's so hard to imagine that in one of the most high density and long-developed parts of the country it is possible to buy a house right on the water for modest sums. NB-I"m not a land shark and no intention of buying anything myself. Just wondering after seeing so many stories that have that slant of middle class folks in normal homes ON THE OCEAN (oops, sorry got a little carried away there).

Any enlightenment please? Just how cheap is ocean front land on the Jersey shore???

Thanks

Ann
