Yep - I am realy having fun with this decorating idea and this is my latest effort.

Red Velvet cupcakes again with the same buttercream frosting in pink and white.

Kathy, when thrips move in they do mess up the pristine beauty of roses, but I think it'll get better if we don't try to use insecticides (which don't help much anyway) and give the beneficial insects time to eat 'um up. Indu, thanks! The roses by the rustic bird house are Valentines, which along with the Knockouts, are among the most prolific blooming varieties that I grow. Incidentally, Valentine will grow as a short climber if they have something to lean on. My neighbor Georgianne has one planted against the trunk of a tree and it's gorgeous. I need to get a picture of her's sometime. It's nice that Valentines are nearly thornless as opposed to Knockout's thorny canes.

Alexa, first attempts don't turn out like that. You must be a natural. Annie, you nailed it in your last photo. Keep in mind that for sharp detail, the icing should be of medium consistency (not to soft/ not too stiff). Try my buttercream if you keep having trouble. You mentioned having trouble finishing it off. When you're close to the end, release the pressure in your hand, then barely tuck the icing tip to the last row of icing on the cupcake, and (without applying any pressure) pull away. I haven't made buttercream rosettes since Sam was little, but it seems to be making a big comeback. And I suddenly want to decorate cupcakes again. Sol

Writing using this mini IPad, citing what possibly where, and then the info. Disappeared... Here's the gist: It is important to know something about your zone and growing conditions so we can provide the most useful input. Here are some suggestions. Maybe something will fit into your design and be appropriate... Miss All American Beauty, Ch-Ching, Pope John Paul II, Broadway, Queen Elizabeth, Gold Medal, Grande Dame,Over the Moon. Portlandia ( grown as a shrub) or Buff Beauty . I would possibly be inclined to place a tall shrub rose like Buff Beauty, or something else, in the corner by Mr. Lincoln. The difference in growth etc. breaks things up a little more than just different sizes and colors, unless you want to keep that pattern. Sheila, I think one of the major differences between my garden and the one at Wooster was that when my spring starts, it progresses rapidly into summer. (Last year a local friend bought twenty roses and planted them in mid April and they didn't grow very much. Reason: allow a week or two for the roses to grow out into 'real dirt' and THEN the rose puts on growth. Except last spring we barely had five weeks of optimum temperatures. It was either very wet and no sun or too darned hot. ) The crop farmers felt it as well. I would expect you are far enough north to have several months before 'summer warmth' hits like a sledge hammer. The moss roses up in Ohio had huge bouquets of mixtures of buds and blooms and not all maturing at once. When one had three blooms, you could see several spent blooms, and about twelve more buds in different stages of maturity. My growing conditions don't make for a long spring and early summer bloom for once blooming OGRs. It just doesn't happen. Heat and sunlight happen and I learned that if I don't / didn't photograph them at the start of their bloom,. the next week the bloom would be over. In your part of the world, rose buds don't mature too fast, they get large. And the blooms get large as well. In Maine we saw a rose (once bloomer) and the bloom was five inches across. (The tight petaled white one with the distinctive green pip at the center.) I grew that rose and had never had a bloom more than three inches wide and my petals never reached the size of theirs). I do look forward to hearing about your mosses, I'd expect by year two, they will be magnificent. Ann

Very nice indeed. I intend to never make them again. Funny how I can make a 3 tiered fondant covered black and white wedding cake and it turned out OK, but those roses just make me nuts....

Ant this is basically what I did to get it two-toned. I actually mixed up a little icing with the pink, and put that in the bag first to make the color stronger....

Your phlox look at about the same stage as mine, not surprisingly. They're one of my favorites.

Wowee. Has anyone said wowee yet? Wowee. YOu have a good touch to be able to do that. I would just pick a rose and stick on top of the cupcake.
