Question about 'stain' cycle on an LG washer

I'm looking at this LG model, http://ca.lge.com/en/down/product/050401/WM1333HW/WM1333_V3%20(3).pdf

I'm not sure if it's available in the US, but Future Shop carries it in Canada. It's the cheapest LG with a heater, I believe.

They mention that the "sanitary" cycle heats the water to 75C, however I don't know whether it uses it to maintain the temperature on other cycles...

Also, does anybody know whether the "stain" option means it fills with cold/cool water and the gradually heats it to a higher temperature or is this something that simply adds time to the cycle?

From the LG WM2688 Service Manual:

Â STAIN CYCLE: Adds time to the wash and rinse cycles for better stain removal. Automatically provides a rinse.

Also in that manual it shows a Program Chart on page 14 that indicates that the heater is active (step #6) in all programs except "Drain & Spin" and "Rinse & Spin".

It also defines temperatures as :
Extra Hot 70C
Hot 50C
Warm 40C
Cold 30C

Now, I don't know if your particular washer model is exactly the same, but I would venture that they keep it simple, and use the same proven washing programs for most of their line. Maybe not but I would think so.

I asked LG and they said that the heater indeed does go on on every cycle to maintain the correct temperature. As for the model, rather than being too new I think it is in fact too old... It's not available on LG's US site, and here in Canada it is only sold at Future Shop, and you can only order it online, they don't seem to have store pickup available. I think Sears carried it for a while here but it's not on their site anymore...

that's the seal. We leave our washer door open after almost every wash. That's recommended for most front load washers. We've had our LG washer for about 6 months and haven't cleaned the seal. It looks clean, you can flip the bottom lip up a little and take a look under the seal. Some LG's have a TUB CLEAN cycle. LG service manuals

Dragonfly, the heater is necessary for the sanitary cycle, but it is also effective on the warm and hot cycles to assure that you have a constant warm/hot temperature. It'll give you better cleaning results, but some people report that they get very good results without the heater as well. It is a personal decision if you want to spend some extra money. By the way, it is correct that FLs have longer wash cycles than TLs. Most of the energy is needed to heat up the water for warm or hot cycles. FLs use A LOT less water so you save a lot of energy (electricity or gas) by heating up smaller amounts. The rotation of the drum does not take much electricity at all. Thebearsfamily, I haven't read the statement about the sanitary cycle that you quote. It is, however, just partially true. The main reason for having the sanitary cycle is to wash and sanitize things like towels, sheets, dish rags and so on. Not all fabrics can be washed that hot, so you have to be a little careful about using that cycle. If you hardly ever do a (real) hot wash, the sanitary cycle can be used to keep the washer free of detergent residue and mold. Some washers have a cycle specifically designated for this purpose. It is not really necessary though. It is important to leave the door of a FL open after using it and possibly wiping off the door gasket if water collects in there. Also make sure not to use too much detergent. If you keep doing this you shouldn't have a problem even with a washer without a heater.

My pleasure. Yes, I have several of their laundry products and their instruction manuals tend to be rather vague. (I learned a lot about the machines from trying different cycles and options and observing them in action.) I rarely use the soak option in my older model Miele washer, so I really don't miss it in my W4840. The machines clean so well that you probably won't miss it either. Give the longer, hotter cycles with the heavy soil (prewash) and sensitive (extra rinse) options selected a shot. I'm certain you will be very pleased with the results.

Don't just assume that the hoses are wrong, examine the situation to confirm it. Pull the machine forward enough to get access behind it and follow either one of the hoses from the machine to the supply tap. There should be labels of some ilk to identify which is the Hot and Cold connection ports. If they're connected wrong, simply shut off the faucets, disconnect and reconnect both hoses (at either only the faucet end or only the machine end) correctly, turn the faucets back on. It's no more complicated than disconnecting/reconnecting a garden hose from an outdoor faucet. There'll be a little water leakage from residual pressure in the hoses when they're disconnected so have a towel ready to catch it.

Wow, so it sounds like the LG puts temperature accuracy over energy savings when using cold water. Bah! Our cold water runs at 48Â°F / 8.8Â°C. How could anyone say that 86Â°F / 30Â°C is *cold* water? I never use warm or hot water on my clothes because I just care to pay for the gas bill to heat the water again. Fortunately, my clothes aren't grimey when I wash them, so they don't come out stained, smelly or faded white.

We have an LG washer on order right now, so I'm hoping the heater isn't on all the time or is defeatable.

I wouldn't get too hung up about the energy use of the internal heater. We currently have a Danby and out of curiousity I once measured the energy use while it was heating the water during a 140F wash. It used less than 0.5 kwh of electricity. Even at our outrageous electric rate of 20 cents/khw it's still less than 10 cents of electricity. Now the LG is a different machine that's about two times the size of the Danby, but I don't believe it uses twice as much water. Over a month that adds about $2 to $3 to our electric bill.
