How to choose a breadmaker?

Hi all - I've done some searching, and while I saw a lot of great info, I couldn't find many name-brands mentioned. I am in the market for a bread machine, and I do not know where I should invest my money. (I am actually buying for myself and my father.)

Could anyone make any reccomendations on what brands I should shop within, or what features I should look for? I would like one that will handle stiff dough (I heard that whole wheat bread is especially stiff and that some machines can't handle it.) Also, a friend of mine told me to get a machine that does not leave a hole in the loaf after baking it. Hers always come out with a long tunnel in the center. Are they all this way, or is there a specific feature to look for?

Thanks very much in advance... Also, what would I expect to pay for a top notch bread maker?

And one more quick somewhat OT comment before I end my post: Has anyone felt a crunch in flour since the gas prices have risen? Does your bread machine save you money in the long run since a loaf of bread costs $5 in some places?

Thanks for reading!
