heat pump & auxiliary heat question

Hi, I just moved to a place that has a heat pump & auxiliary heat. I know the heat pump gets used until the outside temperature gets too cold for it to keep the inside warm, but I was wondering how the system actually knows when to start using auxiallary heat and when to stop using the heat pump heat. I assume it has temperature sensors, but i don't know if they would be located in the thermometer itself or if it is outside in the heat pump unit. All units are different, but is there a simple way to check temperature sensors to see what they are set to?

Some thermostats are more sophisticated than others. With the proper stat, and an outdoor sensor, the stat can determine when to add aux heat or use it exclusively.

If your stat doesn't have this capability, the contractor can set the stat's lockout temperatures to achieve the above. This is based on economic considerations and the capability of your unit.

Most systems that don't have super-sophisticated controls, the indoor thermostat triggers the auxiliary if the room temp drops 2Â°F or so below the setpoint ... or if the thermostat is electronic (but still not super-sophisticated), it may activate the auxiliary based on run-time, if the compressor is running and the room temp isn't rising to the setpoint fast enough.

"Auxiliary" by definition runs the heat strip concurrent with the compressor. The compressor doesn't shut off, the heat strip supplements it. "Emergency" heat, on the other hand, does run the heat strip(s) exclusively, with the compressor being shut off, this is primarily in case of compressor failure. "Auxiliary" and "emergency" both use the heat strips, just different terms and usage intents. The auxiliary also runs during defrost, during which the heat pump reverses back to air conditioning to heat up the outdoor coils and melt off accumulated frost. The heat strips running during defrost have nothing to do with melting the frost, they're turned on to counteract the cold "air conditioned" air that would otherwise be blowing in the house.

A sophisticated control system with outdoor temp sensors can switchover to the auxiliary and lock-out the compressor at very low outdoor temps ... and likewise lock-out the auxiliary so it can't run (except during defrost) until the outdoor temp drops to a specified point regardless of how far-off the room temp is from the thermostat setpoint.

It'll certainly, on average, cost more to heat than cool. A lot of areas now impose summer electrical rates which are higher than winter rates so they may be close. As for determining the cost effectiveness in relation to higher initial costs of higher SEER ratings, there may be more sizzle than steak. Compare the increase in energy savings with the higher efficiency units as opposed to the actual higher cost of a higher efficiency unit. The expected life cycle on a unit is 10 years so figure the energy savings you will experience in your area and see if it will shadow the initial and ongoing maintenance costs. Keep in mind the newer units also have a maintenance schedule that will be required by most companies, which is going to increase those costs. If your energy savings is more than the overall cost of the unit in a 10 year period, then it's worth it. But for the most part, I think you'll find it won't.

For the Op living near Annapolis. Academy Grad here, now living in Rockville. I have a three year old Carrier Heat pump and a three year old oil burner. Based on my research on my unit's effciency or performance versus outside temp and considering oil and electric costs, I have the cross over set temperature now at 25 degrees outside temp. (Started at 35 degrees, last year changed it to 30 degrees and now set to 25 degrees.). You said, "...electric prices went up 70% this year thanks to MD's screw-up with regulation/deregulation." Not sure what this is about, I get my power from PEPCO and we have not seen a 70% increase in rates due to anything - and certainly not due to a "screw-up" by the State or anyone else. (My County has continued to add additional taxes to my oil costs, however.) Your agenda may be showing. lol I just paid $4.39 per gallon for 68.1 Gallons of heating oil... first delivery since December of 2012.

I've had a heat pump for 8 years. I don't do setbacks so much any more for the last couple years as I primarily work from home now, but previous to that, I did a 9Â°F or 10Â°F setback for 12 to 14 hrs (11:30 AM to usually 1:30 AM) on Mon - Fri. I have the auxiliary locked-out until the ambient temp is below 25Â°F (it still runs during defrost cycles). Being near Houston, there's not so much freezing weather, but in the few cases when there was, the system ran continuously for up to 6+ hrs to recover. I never considered that a problem. It produced airflow that was warmer than the room temperature (EVEN with the auxiliary locked-out), so the indoor temp kept rising, albeit slowly. We had a record-making/breaking snowfall on 12/4. Snowed pretty much the whole day, below freezing through the night, but bottomed-out at 26Â°F so was still above my lock-out point. What with the precipitation, the outdoor unit was icy for pretty much the whole day and likely triggered defrost every time the control board checked for it. But ... it STILL kept the house warm, DID actually cycle-off a few times, and 20 mins or so of auxiliary during defrost every 90 mins (or whatever is the defrost check-period) is better IMO than running solely on auxiliary. Anon1111, there are thermostats specific for heat pumps (which yours may be) that have a smart-recovery feature. When programmed for an automatic setback/recovery, they "learn" the operating characteristics of the system over time and start the recovery a little early, automatically raising the temp slowly to avoid triggering the auxiliary. Note that manually raising the temp does not invoke smart-recovery, so the auxiliary will come on in that case ... unless you have the lock-out option installed.

I have to add that the strips can be activated in stages also depending again on your thermostat. So in mild winter temps the system would run the heat pump solely and activate one set of strips for a little additional boost at night or as the temps drop through the winter. As the temps drop further the stat can either lock out the heat pump and run both sets of strips (same as emergency mode) or run the heat pump with all available strips.
I do not recommend any system running the heat pump and all the available strips as it is counter productive. For example, The strips alone should be able to heat the home with no problem and say consume 20kw.. But if the heat pump is running and just needs a little boost and the strips are called in all at once then suddenly your consumption is 20kw+ the heat pumps consumption.
The best bang for your buck is to run the pump... if it can't quite keep up then one set of strips for a boost.. if it gets to the point more is needed than the pump automatically shuts down and all of the strips run. The stats with outdoor temp sensing and low temp heat pump cutout are great for them nights it drops below the setpoint say 20 degrees for a few hours and then warms back up. If its above your set cutout temp the heat pump runs... if its below, the strips run and the pump stays off. It will save in your wallet and wear and tear on your heat pump on the days/nights you might forget to turn the stat in emergency mode and its very cold.
