Proper sizing for a dual compressor Trane unit

Hi all;

I'm replacing 2 Four ton carrier units that are 26 years old.

I'm looking at the Trane XL19i unit with dual compressors. The idea is to be able to run on one unit using 50% +/- of the power as much as possible.

I live in S. Cal. in a rather non humid area at 1300' elev.

I've talked to 2 contractors and I like both. One recommends 2 four ton replacements. One says 2 five ton. His reasoning is that the areas to be done have less need than the 5 ton, but on the single compressor,the 2 1/2 ton would operate more than the 2 ton 50% use of the 4 ton unit, which would be switching back to full power more often. He said that if we were just doing a 16i single stage we should do four ton units. I realize that proper calculations are in order.

One solution I have is moving a 300 sq' game room from the sleeping area unit, and move it to the living/dining unit, since it is located close and used during the day more than at night. (It's an easy move). Then we could do a 5 ton on the day side and a 4 ton on the lighten load on the sleeping side.

Any comments would be appreciated.

thanks

John
