Sferra bedding- Is it worth the money?
Comments (52)@HU-963476589 - I am also extremely confused re: your comments: ”Anyone who knows anything about sheets knows that Sferra and Frette are exactly the same in terms of quality.” Exactly the same?? Is this a scientific fact - OR - is this YOUR OPINION - just like everyone else’s opinions that have been posted? Which sheets are the ”best” is not a question with only one correct answer. There are certain types of fibers and methods of construction that will generally produce a better quality set of sheets which can be used as a guide when looking for a nice set of sheets - however, until I actually touch the fabric myself, there is no way I can be certain that I will prefer one brand of sheets over another (or one particular line of sheets over another line within the same brand). The type of sheets that I think are the ”best quality” is personal to me. Do I like crisp percale cotton sheets OR do I prefer Belgian or French linen sheets? Very different types of fabric (just like there are very different feeling/wearing 100% cotton sheets) - and there are many different opinions re: which is the best. “There’s no objective ’is it worth it.’ If you want the best, and can afford it, you buy it. If you can’t actually afford it, and stretch to buy these, it’ll never be worth it. Those of us who who have the experience with Pratesi, Sferra, or Frette’s top of the line know they’re the best. It’s not up for debate . . .“ (quote edited for grammatical corrections) - frankly, you sound like someone who’s trying to be a snob. Also - based upon this reasoning, if someone has a billion dollars, and can afford the ”best” of everything, that person never contemplates whether something is worth the money before he/she buys it? I also know people who have bought things (houses, cars, etc.) that they really couldn’t afford (= without stretching) - and they definitely enjoyed the item(s) - and felt that the money spent was worth it. People in this thread provided their opinions re: Sferra sheets based upon their personal experience. If someone posted a comment that Sferra sheets are not worth their price tag, and had never slept in a bed with Sferra sheets, then it makes sense to criticize the comment. Also, the OP didn’t ask if Sferra Giza 45 (Luxe or not) sheets were ”worth it.” The OP asked about SFERRA sheets, in general - and people responded based upon their experience. Your comment that “[t]here is so much wrong information on this thread” simply makes no sense. FYI - I’ve slept in many sets of nice sheets - including Sferra, Frette, and Pratesi. Personally, I thought the Sferra sheets were nice, but they wouldn’t be in my top 5. @chispa - apparently, you didn’t care for your Sferra sheets because you couldn’t actually afford the sheets - however, that doesn’t make much sense since your husband actually likes the Sferra sheets = he can afford them . . ....See MoreS/O: why aren't extras/upgrades/enhancements worth extra to buyers?
Comments (28)This is a new era of buying and selling after the real estate "bubble". Two years ago we sold a condo in Florida and a custom mountain lake home in Tennessee. Both buyers were obtaining mortgages, one being a jumbo mortgage. The Florida condo was appraised slightly below selling price. It was completely remodeled by us (new kitchen and two baths, etc.). The inspector told the young lady she would never find a condo in better condition. All new appliances, new water heater, new air conditioner. We owned it for two years, but decided even as snow birds we would rather have a house. But her Daddy told her not to pay over appraisal. The comps were condos in the same development that had never been upgraded or maintained. Many had been rented out. We sold it to someone else for our asking price. They didn't obtain a mortgage. The home in Tennessee was not on the market. A realtor showing another home in the neighborhood asked if they could see our house. They came back with an offer the next day, which was not the greatest offer We decided to accept the offer and move to the Florida house we had purchased two months before. It gets confusing, I know. :) The inspector was ruthless, but came back with nothing wrong in our new custom built home. The pest inspector came back with nothing (yup the bank required it). The appraiser on the other hand was a bit rude. When I said I wasn't too concerned about the appraisal price since the sell price was below tax appraisal value, he said, Oh, we often appraise homes below the tax app. value now. He told us our home was beautiful, but every home in the neighborhood probably had the same upgrades. No they did not. In the end they said there were really no comps, which wasn't true. But the most chilling experience I had was that the two appraisers used exactly the same words in two different states. It is beautiful, but this doesn't count. This is overkill, it doesn't count. Only the comps matter. Only square footage matters. I have bought and sold quite a few homes in my life. In a brand new builder developed area you get the basic house for the price of the model. Upgrades are paid for as an extra expense. Years ago we had no inspectors and no formal appraisals. It seems the banks do not want to pay for the upgrades, and are driving the prices. Now it has eroded into buyers with cash that look at comps and again do not want to pay for the upgrades. Even 11 years ago I sold a home in Ft. Lauderdale by myself (height of the market) and the buyer had an inspector, obtained a mortgage, but no appraiser came to my house. I sold my "model" for a higher price than anyone had ever sold for. Does anyone think that perhaps the banks are running the market??? Money makes the world go 'round....See MoreIs it worth the extra money
Comments (2)Need more information. One system or two? Sizes please? On the Carrier you have been quoted their low end Comfort Series both condenser and air handler. I would recommend their mid range Performance Series Mdl 25HCC5 HP condenser and FV4B series var speed air handler. Carrier Edge Thermidistat. For 2 stage HP condenser Mdl 25HCB6. For Trane XR16 sgl stage HP condenser or 2 stage XR17 condenser, both paired with best matching air handler TEM6 or TAM7 var speed models. XL824 thermostat. There is your fair comparison between the brands. Update your pricing and then decide on Sgl stage systems or 2 stage systems. I personally prefer Trane( or same AmStd) over the Carrier but you can not go wrong with any of the above as long as you have good ductwork system- size and design, system sizing plus good install. Anything about filter cabinets and heat strips? IMO...See MoreIs Cement Board worth the extra money
Comments (10)"One of the problems with cement siding is it doesn’t flex with the building in high winds." I've never seen this. When you pick up a length of fiber cement siding, like Hardi plank, it can flex a lot due to the reinforcing fibers. I can imagine cracks as a result of improper installation and nailing technique, or movement of the structure due to earthquakes, but not simply from wind. As far as I'm concerned, a house that flexes in the wind has serious structural problems, and the siding is the least of these. I have a two story house covered in Hardi plank and have been through windstorms with gusts in the range of 60-70 mph...zero damage. If you Google for cracks in cement board, they are uncommon and almost always are a result of poor installation technique....See Morenewhome3
