You could always do soapstone tiles. It would be easy enough to carve a design into them with a Dremel because of it's relative softness. It could even be a nice DIY project for you to create a memorable personal touch. Quartersawn oak would be fine, as long as the stain has that bit of red to it that gives the room the "lit by embers of a flickering fire" look.

Be very careful to get the lighting right for this kitchen. The number and type of recessed lighting is what makes this kitchen appear to be cozy and warm, not dark and cavelike. The one addition to the inspiration kitchen that I would make is in cabinet lighting for the glass uppers. The items on display aren't very well seen here, and it's a design miss with an otherwise quite pretty room.

Holly- You're right good lighting is key! I like the recessed lighting which I currently have; although, tweaking here or there may be needed. You couldn't be more right about the glass uppers. I have added upper glass lighting to the must list. Thank you for the feedback re: qs oak.

Given the Arts & Crafts influence I think quarter sawn oak is the appropriate choice. However you may find that it's actually more expensive than cherry. QSO is generally more expensive than "regular" oak because you get less of it out of the tree. QSO is highly desirable for its straight grain and stability.

I could be wrong, though, and cherry might be more expensive. Either wood species would look great.

You inspiration kitchen has an undermount SS sink so I don't see why you couldn't too.

Judging by the reflections on the counter to the far right it looks like they did puck lighting.

Just wanted to point out that the uppers may not have glass in the top. Looks like a display shelf that is trimmed out to tie in with the cabinets and left open like a transom above the fridge. Our neighbors did that when refacing their original cabinets to create the look without the expense of additional cabinets. Without doors and the back just a thin veneer stained to match, you could save a lot of money.

Just to emphasize--red stain and lighting are of the utmost importance to that look.

Also check out Motawi Tile Works and browse through their various collections. Spendy, but at least your inspiration uses art tile sparingly.

Grumpy- thanks for the heads up. The first custom guy I got a bid from was 10% cheeper with the QSO. Don't know if that will ring true with the others.

Pratt and Larson is another place to check for tile.

From the reading I did when planning our kitchen, you can use QS Oak or Cherry when doing Craftsman. I like both woods, but am totally in love with natural cherry and the way it changes over time, so that's what we went with. Our builder told us that QS Oak would have been more expensive than the cherry.

I agree that either cherry or quartersawn oak would work. And I think an undermount sink would would work just as well as it does in the inspiration photo, which is to say, very well.

Another option for the tile is Motowi tile from Ann Arbor (and Pewabic from Detroit) - our new children's hospital has lots of Pewabic and the staff and kids made many of the tiles.
Another tile source and considerably less is Epro tile out of Ohio.
I am partial to Cherry or else a painted wood. I have been staring at a houseful of mission oak too long!

Two other tile sources to check out: Mission Tile and Rookwood. I have some Motawi accent tiles in my kitchen and heartily endorse them too. Keep in mind that though all of the these companies are quite pricey, you can buy just the accent tiles from them and find something that's compatible, but cheaper, as a field tile. The Motawi tiles are quite thick...nearly half an inch, so it took some finagling to get them to look right with thinner field tiles from another company (Ann Sacks) surrounding them. But it can be done.
