Have you ever checked on Unclaimed Funds??

Have any of you checked for unclaimed funds and actually found some?

Earlier this week I wandered onto my states website and found my best friends name listed. I told her about it and she claimed....$187.50!!

She is so excited. She's been struggling financially and this is a real boost for her.

I started at the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators site (www.naupa.com) I think it's okay to post this since I don't get anything from it, right?

I'd love to hear if anyone else has a good story.

I just got a request for free seeds from my Trade list. atticville, Are you sure the email was from a GW member? Cold emails often come from non-members, or previous members (now maybe banned). If they emailed you via GW, did you get the member name? Sometimes it shows to the receiving party and sometimes it doesn't. I don't correspond with anyone much about anything, until I find out a member name, and look at their Member Page. I just got the "want" list of what I have to trade... "Everything"! I kinda saw that coming. You'll learn to better word things like maybe pick 'some' or a 'few', or 'up to X number of packs' instead of leaving yourself wide open. I have heard of a few others that make outlandish requests at the expense of a sharing member's generosity. So, assuming they provided their valid GW member name, how are you going to proceed? I think I'd be tempted to say that I really didn't have the time to do such a HUGE (I see you have 33 items listed!) Postage Offer and instead steer them to the many Seeds for Postage offers on the Forum. If they find that cold emailing works with you and they get seeds, they will likely be cold emailing others begging as well. Newbies or newer members might not realize that it isn't the 'norm, for people to be cold emailing them asking for free seeds, and they might 'cave' and send free seeds, even picking up the postage...sigh. hmmm...maybe a thread covering 'cold emails', with no member name provided, or nothing to trade is needed...think? Natesgram, I've worked in a NICU for 15 years and I can't tell you how much we appreciate those fleece blankets for our babies. We also have local volunteers who make isolette covers to keep the environment dark for our babies because it is developmentally appropriate (they shouldn't be born yet). Have you ever seen one? And when my late grandmother was getting chemo for pancreatic cancer, she was really appreciative of the person who made her a cozy fleece for when she got her weekly chemo infusions. I just want to send a big thank you to you for your work, because I know how much such those small things mean from the other side of the fence. Yes, I volunteer. I have volunteered in the medical tent for the NYC marathon for several years. This was before children. After 911 I volunteered making sandwiches for the rescue workers at ground zero. Before I started my career as a PA I volunteered at my local hospital transporting specimens to the lab and escorting patients out of the hospital. Currently I volunteer as a girl scout leader for my 9 year old's girl scout troop. I was never a girl scout as a child, so I am learning as I go. Even though I rolled my eyes when I was asked, I truly enjoy the girls and having a positive influence on them. We are currently involved in a project in building butterfly gardens in our community to restore monarch butterfly habitats. It is so much fun seeing these girls get involved. My mom is getting ready for retirement, she has been volunteering at our local animal shelter. I think she has always been involved in some sort of volunteer project for as long as I can remember. I guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree. :)

Once a friend of mine sent me a Christmas gift but it never came, until 6-9 months later! It was a homemade fruitcake. I was swapping with Kiwi who's in New Zealand and my package never got to her. Weeks later it showed up back at my house, pretty mangled. I had to resend it to her. I've had a few Netflix movies disappear when I mailed them back. I was putting them in my mailbox and putting the flag up but I only did it very rarely, usually I drop them in the drive thru mail drop in front of our post office. So, I got kinda suspicious that everytime I left them in our mailbox here at the house they would turn up missing. I quit doing that, in fact I only put mail that doesn't belong to me out there anymore. Then about two months ago I was leaving work and dropped my Netflix movies in a curbside box in Lexington and one turned up missing again. I hate getting the ex's mail. He's never lived in my house and I just find it really annoying that they are sending his crap to me.

Have you ever taken a vehicle in for a "recall"?

I have one of those GMs (Cobalt, vintage 2005) that had a recall notice recently, about the ignition key, that the engine might stop unexpectedly, which could cause major problems. Story was that it has caused some deaths. The news here was that one lost power steering (which is true - but I have strong arms) and power brakes ... which isn't precisely true. My can(1), with a standard transmission, often gets turned off when approaching stop lights that have just turned yellow, half a block away, or when going downhill, if I don't have another vehicle behind, ready to crawl up my tailpipe. I have two to three pushes on the power brakes before the residual power goes off and I have to push hard to get action. I received notice some time ago that I should have nothing hanging from the key, as that tended to initiate the trouble sooner. Haven't taken it in for replacement of the ignition switch, yet. Oh Duh, I never thought to post this. The agency I work for handles the unclaimed property for the State. I work in a different division, so I never think of it...but yeah, every state has an unclaimed properties department, it's for any money or valuables that you may ever had and forgotten, including safe deposit boxes, insurance policies, utility refunds...virtually anything that is yours but never claimed.

In Oregon, unclaimed property is held forever...well, financial things are. Unclaimed property is held for a few years, then is sold at an auction. The proceeds are then held forever. Same with unclaimed estates. It is free to check and free to claim your money. There are some websites that will offer a finders fee, but the State won't charge you.

What is neat here is that all the money is held but the interest earned is distributed annually to schools. Last year the value of the fund was over a billion dollars!!

Last year a man claimed some forgotten stock and it was worth over $50,000. I'd suggest googling your state's unclaimed property...and any state you might have lived in. Also check maiden names. Who knows, you may get a pleasant surprise!

I received about $25 from a forgotten start-up deposit I had made to a utility company 20 years ago.

I did this last year & found my step son & his mother listed. I think my son's aunt was also listed. Of course my name will never be there because we're anal about making sure we get our refunds. lol

Interesting. The only thing I could think of for myself would be "You forgot to redeem a gift certificate and it expired." Apparently none of mine expired.

Great timing...
We used that site a while back - our check for $8.40 (from Texas) arrived today.
Since I don't buy anything regular price that like getting at least $10 :-P

Holy Crap! I got nothing but I found a bunch of my neighborhood friends on there.... How do I explain I plugged their names in there LOL??!!

Dixiedo, just commit a little white lie...next time you see your neighbor, casually mention that you found some unclaimed money for yourself from an old bank account, then tell them to go to the site:)

My husband claimed $155 from an old bank account:) And we thought we cleaned that out when we moved!

I went on the website because we owned property in Denver in 1999; there was a place to click on canadian provinces, I clicked on mine, Quebec,
and there's close to 800$ related to a home we sold in 1998 !!!!

now I have to go back and figure out how to claim it.

darn, I forgot to look in Colorado, I was too excited.

My sister had $6 from PG&E back in 1977. Wonder if she ever claimed it???

I checked years ago and found nothing. Must check again.
