Even though you have a polished chrome faucet, the cabinet hardware does not have to match it. Your appliances are probably not polished chrome either. Depending on the style of the kitchen, you could go with brushed stainless, satin nickel, or maybe one of the antique or weathered finishes on both types of cabinets. Or find something you like that's similar in style, but different in finish that compliments each color of cabinet. Knowing what style your kitchen is would help for offering suggestions. Sara C - I think as long as you have the same style/shape you can mix up your finishes - Just have something on the counter (a bowl or tray in the same finish) to tie it back to the perimeters. What is your fridge and other hardware (doorknobs, lighting, etc)? What about your countertops? Is there some tone you can pull from those? Go safe with the perimeter pulls and then I think you can get a little crazy on the island with a different finish as long as the pulls are the same style/shape. That way if it's just the island you can switch it out again without too much expense. I always get pulls everywhere and skip knobs entirely. skmom - love those orange chairs from IKEA. How do you like yours? I love the color, shape and style but I could see and feel slight bumps in the seats from the hardware connecting it and ended up returning mine.

I agree with Patricia -- is should be light to dark not dark to light -- dark uppers make the kitchen seem "top heavy"

If you end up painting you should do the appliance panels depending on where it is. Meaning if the dishwasher is lower level (obviously lol) do wood. Because the lowers will be wood. Fridge should be wood. Vent hood should be white. Etc. I would stain the cabinets the same as the floor if you can. Very pretty flooring. Love the color.
