Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Cabinet Hardware - two-tone kitchen

I'm remodeling my kitchen, and cabinets are already in. It is a u-shaped kitchen with an island- all wall cabinets are white shaker. The island is slate stained maple (so almost black, but kind of grey and can see the wood grain). I can't decide on cabinet hardware. Originally thought i wanted matte black, but it disappears on the island. I've purchased one in almost every finish trying to decide. What have you seen that looks good?

We decided to do entirely different pulls on our island, which is a contrasting color and entirely different top, than we did on our perimeter cabinets. We really wanted the dark pulls on the perimeter because if you were to see them up close they look very much like our stone counter, but they just looked crummy on the grey on the island, so we just went with something different. I think brass would've looked great on my island, but hubby just isn't into it and I couldn't convince him...

You could do the black on the white cabinets and a chrome (or brass/gold! I kinda like that....) in the same style on the maple.

One of my artist friends painted his kitch cabs satin black, then refaced the doors (inside the trim) with bird's eye maple veneer. He finished it off with protective polyurethane. It was gorgeous! I think life is too short to not have at least some of what we want if it's within our means. Go for it! Can you do something with the doors you have without replacing them? Got a picture of your cabs you can post for us?

Thank you all for your advice. The painter is coming this weekend and I'llgo with the majority vote and tell him to do all white. You can't really tell from the photos, but the walls are painted a light gray, slightly lighter than the ribbon in the Quartz. I know the floors need to be changed too and a colorful backsplash would really help the space, but I'm not spending $ on those items right now. I'm only doing the 2 things in the kitchen that I dislike the most, the countertops and the cabinets.

I like both but do favor the lighter for now. I thought about herringbone but decided on brick lay as you see from my pic. I chose that bc I also picked a tonal tile with 3 shades for texture & interest wo being too busy (see pic) & chose grout to match tile not counter. My tile is 2 1/2” x 5”, Ztile Melange, Green Tea color. Looks gray! My advice to pass along on picking BS is to ”wait until the countertops are installed”! I’m so glad I did. I .read that over & over from Houzz Pros too. I took the advice to heart bc the person at countertop company told me to just wait! I had narrowed my choice down to 2, which it looks like you have done. Once tops were in I did a 180 change on BS tile I’d decided on & went with my second choice. And I was looking at multiple pieces of the 2 tiles to get a better idea. A surprise to me for sure that I changed. All of those whose opinions I’d solicited also seemed amazed at difference in look sitting on top of new counter. And, I solicited opinions from every trades person in my kitchen as well as friends & neighbors! 99% of them changed their pick after counters in too. Reason is that until counter is in, you’re looking at a small sample and a huge vertical slab. Light hits the counter very differently on the horizontal & in your home light. The BS tile as well. So, make sure both of your picks are available on quick turnaround & just wait. BTW, at this point, my pick for you is lighter tile Bc I Like it better with darker cabinets & tile will be right next to cabinet color next to frig. When I look at BS my eye goes down not up so I see base cabs more. Love your counter & cab together.

@lwfromny thanks for your input! yes, I can decipher it all, no worries. Trust me when I say I have done all my research on vent hood inserts and the importance of having one atleast the same size as your range, preferably one size bigger. The research recommends it being atlest the same size. Im ok with it being at 52 with a CFM of 1200. That was my thoughts exactly, keep all countertops the same to have the cohesiveness; great!

Chrome or brushed nickel. Pull it all together with one style pull and one color/pattern countertop.

Since the cabinets are two different colors, I would probably pick one metal color for all of the cabinets. And because I think kitchens need cabinet hardware to show as part of the design, I would not pick a dark color that would get lost in the island. I would not pick gold/brass, because for me that's too trendy and will become dated very quickly. So I would pick a brushed nickel or a chrome. And I would do a combination of knobs and pulls AND/OR I would do different sizes of the same knobs and pulls based on the size of the cabinetry for additional visual interest and to make it look more custom.

We have the same colour scheme and used brushed brass pulls. I like the warm colour with the black. We did brushed nickel the first time around, but then we had a fire and redid everything. When we redid the cabs, we went with the brushed brass to update things a bit even tho we kept the same colours.

skmom - your kitchen is gorgeous! I LOVE your island. I really wanted a brushed brass or champagne brass pull, but my husband wouldn't go for it either. We may try a different finish on the island though, same hardware. Thanks for commenting!

Sara C - I think as long as you have the same style/shape you can mix up your finishes - Just have something on the counter (a bowl or tray in the same finish) to tie it back to the perimeters. What is your fridge and other hardware (doorknobs, lighting, etc)? What about your countertops? Is there some tone you can pull from those? Go safe with the perimeter pulls and then I think you can get a little crazy on the island with a different finish as long as the pulls are the same style/shape. That way if it's just the island you can switch it out again without too much expense. I always get pulls everywhere and skip knobs entirely.

skmom - love those orange chairs from IKEA. How do you like yours? I love the color, shape and style but I could see and feel slight bumps in the seats from the hardware connecting it and ended up returning mine.
