another cell phone question

For those that quit having a land line, how do you manage to always have your cell phone nearby?

I don't always wear clothes with pockets, and a fanny pack is not quite my style in the summer, while wearing a sundress.

We are considering telling the land line good bye.

I always have my cell in my pocket, but I still have a land line. Gotta have it for faxes and my dialup internet, LOL!

I have so many clothes, without pockets. I just wonder, how I will do, if I no longer have a house phone at different points in this house....

I have a no-contract cell phone from Virgin Mobile. They, and others, have basic-capability plans from about $10 per month and up, though I don't know about linking to your computer.

Just a funny story about cell phones, that happened to me, last year. I was a supervisor in an examination at my DS school. It was a serious exam and about 100 students where in the school hall, nervous and anxious. They had all been told they must leave there cell phones (in Australia we call them mobile phones) on a table near the door. They where also told they must be turned off. Well half way through the exam one of the phones on the table starting playing a stupid song, ringing. I rushed over to the table and frantically looked through all the phones, trying to stop the noise. I finally did that, but students where restless. Then to my horror I realized about half the phones where switched on ! There must have been about 90 of them. So I spent ages, and ages, turning them off, all these different phones. Some I just could not work out how to do it, as I am technologically challenged to say the least. So next exam, I made sure, I stood near that table and said in a big lound voice "make sure they are turned off, please!". Phones, stressing me out ! Popi

I have the Moment and just plain love it. I had two Smart phones before this, and didn't care for either of them. The Moment is not difficult to learn, and the Sprint Store where she gets it should walk her through the basics of setting it up. It's got some wonderful apps that you can EASILY download for free ... including Shop Savy, which lets you 'scan' a bar code of something you're thinking of buying, and if it's in the database it'll pop up with prices of the same item near where you are to confirm whether you're getting the lowest price. Fun! I've used it for a spool of CDs and a memory card for my camera. LOL. I access both work and personal email accounts with it, and have synced my work calendar to it so it gives a little tone at 15 minutes before my next meeting. I even access Facebook with it! It sure wasn't easy to do that with my other Smart phones. Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll answer them if I can!

If you want to talk about power flow through batteries and electrical devices, I'll put it separate so as not to confuse the above. You're right - draw and pull aren't really the right words to use. They're colloquialisms I've used for years in my job. "This pulls 10 amps," etc. The best analogy, and the one that was often used in my education, is to liken the flow of electricity to that of water in a pipe. A higher amp circuit is a bigger pipe. A higher voltage circuit is like a pipe with higher water pressure. The current-using device is like the faucet you open or close. Higher pressure (voltage) and lower resistance (Ohms) are what will increase the current (amps) through the circuit. Amps do not exist until current begins flowing. Amperage ratings of power delivery equipment refer to the maximum allowable amperage the circuit or device can safely carry. Amperage ratings of power consuming equipment refer to the maximum amperage they'll carry in normal operation. To relate that to this discussion, it should now be clear why a higher amperage charger is fine: it's merely a bigger pipe that can deliver more current if needed. That doesn't mean the current will flow - the voltage and resistance will determine that - but that it can flow if needed, exactly as I started in my analogy of the night light and the microwave oven. Charging batteries is an interesting area, because you can observe what happens with a device called a Kill-a-Watt that indicates the wattage used by any device you plug into it. I have a 12-volt car battery that is one of those "booster" batteries you can use to jump-start your car if there's no other car around. You charge this battery with a supplied plug-in charger. If the battery is heavily discharged, the charging wattage will show about 14, but as the battery nears a full charge, the wattage slowly drops to about 2, and at that point you can unplug the charger. This happens because as the charger continues to supply a constant voltage, the charging current drops as the battery's internal voltage nears that of what the charger is delivering. This all occurs not as a function of any type of computerized circuitry in the charger, nor as a result of the charger's maximum amp rating, but simply because of how current flows in the battery charging process. "Smart" chargers can affect the charge rate of a battery by applying different voltages at different phases of the charging process, as batteries of different chemistry do better with faster, slower charges or other specific things, such as high voltage early and low voltage late in the charge, or whatever. Most cell phones today have charge control circuitry to somewhat counter the detrimental effects of constant overcharging, as people frequently do when they charge the phone all night while it's still turned on and they're asleep.

Stacy, have you tried calling your cell phone? Probably have, but just thought I'd ask.
I can't get rid of mine because I get my internet through it (Q-uest). I don't have cable, I have Dish network. And if the weather is bad, I don't have that, so I wouldn't have my internet either.

I have a "holster" type case that just clips onto the belt. Several different types out there. But around the house I just leave it sit next to my recliner. I also keep a charger right there too so it can charge while it's near me. And I charge it in the vehicle a lot of times too. A car charger is pretty much mandatory for me.

When the electricity went out several summers ago, DS was living in NYC. The blackout occurred from Ohio through the eastern coastal states. If you remember, an Ohio squirrel got into some equipment and thus the blackout. DSs electricity was out for 4-5 days, and by then no one had any cellphone juice because they could not recharge their cells. So, long winded way to say that during a long electrical blackout, if you don't have a land line, you may not have phone service.

Mine has a clip so I can attach it to my belt, waistband or purse strap. I only get one call a day, and it's advertising from a local web business. Except for that, no one calls me.

i either keep it in the car or carry in my purse. i often use just a small swing coach pack or tiny purse but i usually don't have pockets lol. i also don't trust myself not to lose the phone from a pocket. i have an expensive personal phone and a blackberry storm for work so i am very aware about not loosing them. i have a co-worker who just lost his new blackberry storm we all got for work while he was on a rollercoaster :-) this past weekend, it fell out of his pocket. he's an owners son so i'm sure it's no big deal... most of the yr i have to have my work cell 24/7 (semi drivers on the road) so i'm used to having it.

i got rid of the landline a couple yrs ago. the last several yrs i only used it for faxing clients paperwork as it had no long distance since i used a cell for free long distance. since we have no landline i found a puter program that allows me to scan something i want to fax and send it to a fax# saves us $40 a month which was the cheapest line from Sprint-embarq 8 yrs ago. ~ liz

Normally, I wouldn't be without a landline, so that you have a phone in an emergency. (Cell phones not only run out of juice, but in a big emergency like 9-11, you may not have service for hours, because of the huge # of cell calls clogging the system.)

However, for the moment, with 2 houses, I've been using my cell as my phone in the 2nd house. No, it's not always convenient to carry it with me--so I put it in a central location with the volume turned up high. USUALLY I hear it ring and can answer. But to be on the safe side, I check it frequently to see if I've missed any calls. It really hasn't bee a problem for me so far. But for the long haul, I don't like relying totally on a cell phone (or wireless--since they need to be plugged into the electric to work)--too great a chance of it not being there if you need it for an emergency

Here's another argument for land lines...if you have to call 911 they can find your exact location with a landline. With a cell phone, they can only find the closest cell tower to you.....

Yes Leslie I have but it only had one bar left on it and B tried to call it this morning and it goes straight to my voicemail....so it is out of juice! Guess I will get a new one...Stacy

The only real problem for me in letting the land line go, is no phone at each end of the house.

Belt clip or pocket doesn't always work, cause lots of times neither is on my clothes.

I know about the no service during a blackout. I do have a solar charger for my cell, which works GREAT. I used it often on my bike trips.

I guess, I just have to move my "usual" resting spot for it up a bit, so it is more in the middle of the house. ;)

Otherwise... peeps just have to leave a message.

No way will I ever wear it on a lanyard, or otherwise on my body. Phones for me are really for my convenience... and not for me to be tied to them.

Good question, as of last week I am trying not to carry mine in my jeans pocket anymore. I took off my jeans and threw them in the washer and forgot to take my phone out : ( NOT a good thing to do.
We haven't had a land line for a couple of years now.

Son's friend got his wet somehow. He let it dry for a week or two and it worked again.
