What to serve, what to serve....

Friday nights are game nights with my girlfriend and her 7 and 11-year-old boys. I get somebody to cook for once a week (and send other leftovers home with!) and we play games. (Embarrassing when a 7 and 11 year old kick your butt at Scattergories every week! LOL)

Tonight I'm wrapping hot dogs with bacon and then with crescent rolls and baking them.

Not sure what to serve with them though. Something kid friendly. And easy. Tator tots?

Can't go wrong with Tator Tots or Mac and Cheese.

Maybe a fruit salad.

Kids friendly? Potato chips or french fries. If you're health conscious, then chose baked. Bring some fruits or jello for a healthy snack.

My husband's uncle used to carve the bird at the table and did a masterful job. She was a home ec professor and the food was wonderful. And he attacked that beautiful bird with great skill and aplomb. He picked the furthest from him, looked you in the eye and said "dark or white" and proceeded to slice a neat slice or 2 from the proper spot. Then he cut a hole in the turkey behind the ribs and in front of the thigh and proceeded to spoon out a spoonful of stuffing, adn your plate went back to you and the next plate was passed while you filled your plate with wild rice and mushrooms, and greenbeans with pearl onions squash souffle etc etc! Good food at Aunt Tiny's house!

And for those who want to complicate things, a traditional Northern California crab dinner would be crab, salad or artichokes, garlicy sourdough bread. Have been to crab feeds that added Aglio et Olio, not much more is needed. Can't tell you how this makes me homesick right now with crab season opening. We would go down to Phil's Fish Market in Moss Landing for fresh crab, and stop at Pezzini's for artichokes. Happily, I found that Wegman's here carries Dungeness crab, even tho it won't be quite the same.

Mom used to make Hen au Vin when we were kids. Older layers that it came time for culling, there were a few every year for a while to stock up the freezer till next round. Best chicken in wine sauce, even if it wasn't the rooster. Most commercial retired layers get composted or made into pet food now and I think it's a shame. Older chickens can be very good eating. White or brown rice was usual, sometimes bread stuffing or mashed potatoes. Mushrooms, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes or winter squash, asparagus, broccoli, caulifower... or on a special treat, a head of both broccoli and cauliflower served up with a cheese sauce and a creamy dilly sauce in boats on the table. Depended on the time of year what sides might get served up. There were almost always salads of various greens, and a bit of a bread basket to sop up what might be left on the plate. Wasn't unusual for mom to take the leftovers (sans sauce boats) and make it all into a soup, pot pie, or stir fry or two. Depended on the leftovers.

What purpose do these structures on my roof serve (see image)?

They appear to cap walls that are not covered by the roof surface. I assume they are an attempt to add aesthetic interest to the house and do not serve a purpose other that cover walls that the roof does not.

For crunchy finger food, add some celery and carrot sticks. Kids will eat them if they are there!

Maybe I'll do something with mac and cheese next week. Never even thought of that...

Baked Beans! I absolutely love beans and things!

Something else that is a kid pleaser: Meat Muffins

Pat out in your hand to flatten, a biscuit, then mold it into a greased muffin pan.
Brown some hmbgr, 1/2 lb makes 8 or more, add some ketchup, mustard, (like a sloppy joe, but not as moist) some garlic, maybe some chili powder, simmer to blend flavors.

Fill the biscuit cups, bake in oven, until biscuit starts to brown, remove, top with grated cheese, return, until cheese melts. Let sit for 5 minutes, remove from muffin tin and enjoy!

If you make celery and carrot sticks and serve them with ranch dressing for dipping, the kids will eat them. Give everyone their own dipping cup to prevent double dipping and spreading colds.
