Septic Tanks, Front Loaders and Powdered Detergent
Comments (5)Using a FL with a septic tank is a great idea. They use much less water than TLs and so they will be less of a burden on your system, prolonging its very-expensive-to-replace life. In fact, I saved my septic tank and leach field from needing replacement by switching from a TL to FL. I'm not sure where the notion about powedered detergent being bad for septic tanks arose. Most major brand powders note that they are safe for septic tanks. I would check the box, or call the manufacturer of the detergent to confirm. I have used only powders for many years and had no problems with my septic system. And as I recall from my rural childhood everybody had septic tanks and liquid detergents were very uncommon, if not un-invented at that time. Comments (8)I have gone back and forth, up and down, in and out on detergent dosing. I've used the detergent manufacturer's recommendation, the washer manufacturer's recommendation, what I've read on here and various amounts through experimentation. Here is what works for me, and me alone: 1.5 TBSP for a full 4 cuft load, 1.0 TBSP if smaller load, and 2 TBSP for a full 4 cuft highly soiled load. I have a whole house water softener, so my detergent needs are greatly reduced. My hardness is essentially zero. Using the above doses, my clothes come out clean and don't require fabric softener. My machine manufacturer (Miele) says, in the manual, to follow the detergent package recommendations. Following the recommendations on the detergent package results in over sudsing. I let the softness of the laundry as it comes out of the dryer be my guide. If it ever comes out feeling even a little stiff or scratchy, I've used too much. This works for me, others may find they need more or less....See MoreHelp! Put detergent in the wrong place in my GE top Loader
Comments (6)There is space between the inner drum and outer tub that isn't accessible unless the inner drum is removed. That's likely where your detergent overdose was deposited. Best you can do is run the machine through a couple full cycles ... whatever is needed ... to flush out the excess. As others have mentioned, oversudsing can be knocked-down with a bit of liquid fabric softener, or antifoam agent as is sometimes used with carpet cleaning machines. Adding some cooking oil may also help. Expect to see bunches of suds in the wash period on the first run, add your antisudsing agent at that point. Might need a little in the rinse. Shouldn't be any needed on the 2nd full cycle run, that's to insure it's rinsed-out fully. However, the whole scenario depends on the local variables (how much detergent, the sudsing characteristic of it, etc.) so deal with the sudsing to whatever extent is required....See MoreBest Detergent for Front Loader with Septic System
Comments (14)We had total septic failure 4 years ago and had to replace. Once you see how basic the system is you become very aware. The plumber's comment about the defunct tank, which cracked and leaked, is that there was a lot of dried soap in there. Having watched them install the new system I am very careful. I should probably be more careful and only use things like Vaska vs the Persil I sometimes use. The saving grace is that I use very small amounts, however since our water is very soft. I also use Rid X once a month to keep the system healthy. I never use chlorine bleach as that's an issue for septic systems and I don't use antibacterial anything. Alcohol does a better job anyway and evaporates. I use half a Method dishwasher tab for most loads and only an occasional Finish quantum because those contain some bleach. Not sure there is a "best" product. Depending on size and usage, septic systems need to be professionally pumped out every so many years -- there's a chart for that online. For our house it's every 7 years. If it's built properly and maintained, it should be problem free....See MoreRelated Professionals
