Trane Estimate Reasonable?

I recently received an estimate for a Trane XR15 condenser plus an air handler and thermostat and was wondering it it seemed reasonable for the Central Florida area:

4TWR5036 condenser

4TEE3F39 air handler

TCont 602 thermostat

The company would also add a small air return. They did do a load analysis so they seem very professional plus they have an outstanding reputation in the area.

The total quote was $5,992 - $200 utility company rebate. That does not include an extended warranty for labor (they offered 1 year and I'd want 10 years) so that would add a little more (any idea how much? I'll be asking tomorrow). I would also be eligible for the $1,500 tax rebate.

I'm not as familiar with your market's pricing, but in DC that price would be very reasonable considering you are working with a reputable company that presumably does quality work. Good equipment, and it's good to hear that they are concerned about getting more return air to the unit. You might ask them to substitute the 602 thermostat to the 802 -- I like the touchscreen programmable thermostat better. Again, in your market you could probably do better pricing wise, but you have to consider workmanship quality as well as future service. Extended labor warranties can be anywhere from $400-700 additional cost from what I've seen -- varies by brand and company. You do want to make sure it is through Trane, not the company itself.

what size are you replacing?

a nice system and reasonable pricing for a three ton XR15. this is a heat pump system, coreect? what size heat strip-probably a 7.5KW?

wrong stat. at the very least, you want Trane's 803 or identical HW equivalent. the HW VisionPro IAQ would be even better with its "dehumidify on demand" feature.

as far as ext warranty, price usually is about 10% of purchase price and in your case around $600.

I would want new refrigerant lineset.

hat are you getting in the way of a rebate? I have the same furnace, and 3 ton XR13. I was told $40 rebate on a cost of aprrox $8400. You may want to keep an eye on my thread, "Checking a Trane quote" for responses as well. You seem to have a better deal that I do. Good luck.

To answer your first question, yes, their is a better 3.5 ton unit that still qualifies for the tax credit. The XR15, which is mechanically very similar if not identical to the XB14, will be a bit quieter and have a 10 year warranty on all parts when registered with Trane -- versus 10 years compressor / 5 years all other parts with the XB14). So it is worth looking into. Model number will be 4TTR5042E1. He may not have bothered quoting it because it is a very similar unit mechanically to the XB14, but the warranty makes it worth it -- unless you were already purchasing a 10 year extended warranty with either system. 2. Finding the right contractor is your primary concern. Brand makes a slight difference in terms of features and efficiency, but overall, most premium units today have 10 year warranties and utilize many of same parts. Not easy today to say that one brand is more reliable than the other.

Thanks for your input so far. I've decided to go with the Trane. He gave me another option for the A/C to go with if I wanted to save money; it is a 2 ton 13 SEER, model no. 4TTB3024, 10 year warranty on the compressor and components and 2 year warranty for labor for $2,270. That is a $730 difference from the 16 SEER. Obvisously in the long run the 16 SEER would save me more money, but how long would it take to make up that $730 difference when I maybe run the A/C for 4 months out of the year and only 2 of the months are when it really gets hot here?

I called today and was quoted $500 for a 10-year extended labor warranty. Sounds good to me.

I'd be replacing a 3 ton unit with another 3 ton. Yes, it's a heat pump and it would be replacing a straight cool system. They only quoted 5KW for the heat strip but I'd probably ask for 7.5KW (given our last, very cold winter :). I'll ask about the thermostat. Unfortunately, it would be extremely difficult to replace the copper as the air handler is in the attic of a two-story townhouse and the copper runs both inside the walls and then underground so about the best I can do is have it flushed.
