Help choosing a new HVAC System

Hi,
I am currently looking at replacing my 1996 HVAC System. The current system works fine, but I am currently working for a subsidiary of Ingersoll Rand which means that I can get a little bit more in rebates on Trane or American Standard. The subsidiary I work for will be spinning off in the next 6 months, so thought I would consider using my rebate to replace my current system. I am not stuck on either brand, and would consider a completely different brand. I am not sure where to start other than requesting a quote. What else do I need to consider? What do I need to look for in making sure I get the correct unit quoted for my house?

Location: 30 miles north of Indy
House Size: Tri-Level w/ 2110 Sq Feet.
Current Central AC is Nordyne S3BA-036k 10 Seer
Current Gas Furnace is Bard IH115D48B
60% Brick, 40% Aluminum Siding

I have held off up to this point due to the other system working, and have considered moving for the past 5 years. Now, it doesn't look like I am in hurry to move anytime soon, so really considering replacing existing system.

Any help, recommendations, or comments are appreciated.

Well I assume you want Trane or AmStd model recommendations.

You are in a unique situation.

Top choice would be 80 KBTU modulating furnace either Trane or AS-they are identical.

AC would be Trane XR 15 or XR 17 and AS Allegiance 15-all 3 ton AC condensers.

Perfect fit media cabinet
Best rated matching evap coil for your application
And best Trane proprietary thermostat.

Of course, you want to be sized correctly.

Not certain what you are looking for. There are always Carrier and Bryant.

And if more driven by price, then look at Rudd/Rheem.

Thanks for the feedback. How do I assure that the quote is sized correctly? I plan on getting a quote from both Trane and AS and then can post.

If the baseboard radiators have been removed, then how is the house heated? If you don't want a hot water system, then the option is a forced air system which can also be integrated with AC cooling. This means running new duct work for both floors. It easier to run duct work from the attic for the second floor which would mean a second furnace. You need to find an HVAC contractor who can take on a project of this size. I would first ask neighbors for recommendations. You could also go to the major brands web sites (Trane/American Standard, Carrier/Bryant, Rheem/Rudd) and look for authorized dealers in your area. You need to find someone who is very good on installation of a new system.

Jt Some questions please. What is your location? What size home living area? What size furnace and eff are you replacing? What size AC are you replacing? I would like to know the exact mdl number evap coil for each quote. What thermostat is proposed for the Carrier quote? That is a big difference between the 96% eff Carrier furnace and the 80% eff Trane furnace-both 60 K input. That would be about 56 KBTUs output on the Carrier and about 48 KBTUs on the Trane. Not insignificant. I don't care for some shortcuts that homeowners make particularly on reusing linesets and using existing thermostats that shortchange a nice furnace's operational capability. nms21...while you're at it you should get the 50 gal water heater. At 3000 SF, I assume you have 4 Bedrooms..some day if you sell the 50 gal might be attractive. I sure do prefer having the extra in my house on those days we all want showers around the same time. I doubt it could be much extra $. My quotes were from Hutchinson, P R Sanders,Bovio and Monday is Black HOrse Pike Plumbing and Heating. I sent BHP plumbing and heating one of the quotes from one of the first two, but I took out all the prices and names. I would like to see what a smaller outfit prices for the same equip. They all have A+ bbb ratings. I got them off the njcleanenergy website and all have done a good amount of jobs under the program. One of them quoted me 13244 after all rebates for the Carrier Infinity 98 gas furnace and infinity 17 2-stage air eligible for the 1100 rebate. That was with a 50 gal direct vent hot water heater and attic sealing. I just don't think I need that hvac. Sounds like a "cadillac" system..I hope he emails me back with something more reasonable. When he was here I thought his would be one of the lower prices....but his quote is for different stuff!

This is my first post on TGW. I will be the first to say that my experience with Trane is very subjective and anecdotal, but the following experience is mine nonetheless. We bought an existing single story 2280 sq. ft. home in Auburn, AL in May of 2012 (15 months ago). One thing that sold me on the home was the presence of a Trane 14SEER HP with variable speed blower installed in 2007. In June, one month after purchasing the home, we had to call the local Trane company to come out for a non-cooling situation. By August, we had replaced (due to actual failures, not just "failing") the compressor, the blower motor, the blower motor circuit board. All but the circuit board were under a part warranty. However, with labor, freon recharging, etc. We shelled out over $2600 in 2012 alone. In March of 2013 we had to replace a startup capacitor, not under warranty, for $400.00. All told, since June of 2012 (this post is made in early Sep 2013) we have spent well above $3,000.00 on this Trane HVAC system. In that time, I have learned (from an independent, well respected local HVAC guy) that our system is woefully OVERsized. We have a 5 ton unit in a space that, I believe, calls for a 3.5 ton unit. We have $500 power bills in the summer months. In general, I think Trane makes a great product like BMW makes a great car. You should just know what you are getting into. The most urgent comment I would make to anyone buying a Trane is to DEFINITELY get the maximum parts and labor warranty you can get and make sure it's transferrable to a new seller. Insist that the dealer perform a Man J load calculation for correct sizing. You will want the results on software letterhead for review.

As stated tri levels are very difficult to control as far as temperature consistency from one level to another. If this is a problem, then discuss with dealer for suggestions to improve. Home has adequate return on each level?

Here is my quote back from American Standard:
AS 95% 2 Stage, 100000 btu gas furnace with variable speed motor, pvc flue, digitial prog. thermostat, duct transitions to existing duct system, and install AS 3 ton, 15 seer AC with Matching coil, line set, pad, whip, etc... all for $8995. If 16 seer 2 speed model is perferred, then add $1004 to price.

How does this compare in terms of pricing etc..? Thanks for the feedback.

Furnace is unnecessarily oversized, pure nonsense!

And due to your unique situation working at I-R and I assume the discounts associated with that relationship, I would want the modulating furnace. Too good to pass up. Get the top of line with your one time opportunity.

Does the pricing listed include all rebates and any special discounts available to you? Certainly nothing special as far as I can tell.

What thermostat? Be specific. You need a true two stage thermostat with that furnace. Filter cabinet? New lineset?

I am not impressed with the pricing or the oversizing of that furnace.

That is the price before rebates and discounts that I can get . My discounts are roughly 1500. I asked about the furnace, and he said that the 2 stage would allow the furnace to run at 60k btu's on warmer days and then at 100k during the cold days. It does include a new line set, but re-using my existing Aprilaire filtering cabinet and de-humdifier.
