Help in choosing/designing HVAC system

I bought a two story 2400 square feet house in Rochester, PA that still has the old natural gas boiler in the basement but the baseboard radiators have been stripped out. I don't want a hot water system but not sure what the best answer is. I thought maybe two furnaces, one in attic for upstairs and one in basement for first floor. I have installed a replacement furnace before but don't know how to deal with this. Maybe I need an HVAC consultant? How do I find one?

If the baseboard radiators have been removed, then how is the house heated?

If you don't want a hot water system, then the option is a forced air system which can also be integrated with AC cooling. This means running new duct work for both floors. It easier to run duct work from the attic for the second floor which would mean a second furnace.

You need to find an HVAC contractor who can take on a project of this size. I would first ask neighbors for recommendations. You could also go to the major brands web sites (Trane/American Standard, Carrier/Bryant, Rheem/Rudd) and look for authorized dealers in your area. You need to find someone who is very good on installation of a new system.

Like above post, I am interested in how you heat since baseboard radiators have been removed.

If this was my home, I would weigh re-installing radiators with a new high eff boiler. Then I would add a high eff 15 SEER heat pump with var speed air handler.

I would definitely get an HVAC pro involved maybe even a consultant familiar with both boiler/radiator heat as well as forced air so you have an idea of your range of options including hot water from the boiler.

What is cost of nat gas and electric for your location?

Av There are three parts to a successful new HVAC installation. 1.a quality dealer and install, a dealer who listens to the homeowner's concerns and goals 2.quality HVAC, brands/models are not the same.there are lots of junk in the residential marketplace 3. And probably the most disregarded and overlooked is a quality ductwork system sized correctly both supply and return and insulated and checked for leaks. Any hot/cold spots should be addressed as usually they are ductwork related. Now to your situation. New HVAC should be sized correctly usually for average temps both heating cooling, not for extreme temps for your location. It is difficult to heat and cool two story home off one system. You can control airflow manually to each floor with dampers on the supply lines. Next would be zoning controls. This can be problematic on retrofits. And the most effective would be two separate systems. You need to know the features you are looking for both cooling and heating such as var speed furnaces, efficiency, sgl stg or two stg condensers. How bout indoor air quality and filters? Don't assume. Read up and be proactive with dealer's that are quoting. Know your warranty. Just a few ideas. IMO Good LUCK!

nms21...while you're at it you should get the 50 gal water heater. At 3000 SF, I assume you have 4 Bedrooms..some day if you sell the 50 gal might be attractive. I sure do prefer having the extra in my house on those days we all want showers around the same time. I doubt it could be much extra $. My quotes were from Hutchinson, P R Sanders,Bovio and Monday is Black HOrse Pike Plumbing and Heating. I sent BHP plumbing and heating one of the quotes from one of the first two, but I took out all the prices and names. I would like to see what a smaller outfit prices for the same equip. They all have A+ bbb ratings. I got them off the njcleanenergy website and all have done a good amount of jobs under the program. One of them quoted me 13244 after all rebates for the Carrier Infinity 98 gas furnace and infinity 17 2-stage air eligible for the 1100 rebate. That was with a 50 gal direct vent hot water heater and attic sealing. I just don't think I need that hvac. Sounds like a "cadillac" system..I hope he emails me back with something more reasonable. When he was here I thought his would be one of the lower prices....but his quote is for different stuff!

You have to keep in mind that many of the components used among the many brands of HVAC units are identical and similar. A brand is just that. Tranes break, Carriers break, Goodmans break... they all break. Installation can make or break any installation. I still do think some brands make better products than others, however. Sometimes there are little things that put one brand ahead of the other--design, engineering, parts availability, efficiency, capacity, etc... I like Trane personally, but I'm not too impressed with their upper-end line of equipment for heat pumps and air conditioners. Carrier has a good, wide product line. You have to consider what you want. Goodman is a basic system. Other brands can provide more features. Of the 93% 2-stage Carrier and the 96% variable-speed Goodman, I'd choose the latter for the variable-speed blower. Put the comparable Carrier up against it, I'd choose the Carrier with the Infinity control and Performance outdoor unit.

Yeah, I thought about some kind of pressure test, but from what I could tell, it would have taken some extensive repair work just to put the system back to a loop of some kind worthy of being tested. So, it's too late now anyway. The Base Board is gone. It really was a mess, and if I ever want to, I could always add some clean new radiators or base boards to the rooms that need it. That being said, I have a decision to make: Option #1 - Variable Speed Air Handler Model#FE4ANF003Twith a 3-Ton, 16 SEER 2 Stage Heat Pump with Air Conditioneing Unit Model#286BNA036. Option #2 - Variable Speed Air Handler Model#FE4ANF005Twith a 3-Ton,20 SEER Inverter Heat Pump with Air Conditioneing Unit Model#280ANV036 Both Systems Equiped with Evolution Zone Controls for 2-Zone Heating and Cooling System. 15 KW Heat Strip ect. Option to add Humidifier and Media Filter +$1,000. The installer did an operating cost analysis and it showed the Extreme System (20 SEER) being just a bit better in cooling, but $900/year less in heating. Which to I pick?
