9 foot island -- how many barstools?
Comments (13)Thought I would share I have the length of the island marked at 8’/9’/8’18”/9’18”. On the far end there are exactly 36” between island and wall. I can’t give more room down there because of the placement of the overhead lights. No chairs on that end. On the left side there is a 39” clearance with an (wide) open hallway to the foyer and spaces for fridge and cabinets on either side. For the width I have it marked at 4’ and 5’. I’d like to do the 5’ and reserve 18” of that as over hang. Not sure if we can do that with cabinet size availability. My hisband is doing the work, so I’ll be talking to him tomorrow about it. Will have our main sink/dishwasher/microwave on the inside right. Iver will be directly across from the island on the right with counters and cabinets running all the way across. Anyway, my plan is 4 seats on the left and 2 on the close end. We are a family of 5, 2 young adults and 1 going off to college, but want everyone to have a seat when we are together....See MoreAngled island with 12 inch overhang - need opinions please :)
Comments (11)Many people on this forum have noted that marbles etches at the blink of an eye. We don't have experience with that yet, because we're only just beginning to move back into our new kitchen and we're still using our temp kitchen for food prep. My marble island is two levels: The prep (lower) level is taken up by a prep sink and giant butcherblock cutting board, so the remaining marble surface is likely only to be affected by water. The eating (counter height) level is where we plan to be "careful", using placemats and runners under plates and platters--that is, until the first etching starts (boo-hoo), and then we'll see how careful we'll be after that!...See Morehow deep is your island seating overhang?
Comments (16)My current island has 8 inches overhang. I'm 5'8" and it's usable but could definitely be better. I think 12 inches would be perfect and that even 10 would be a big improvement on what I have now. I think that 15 would probably be wasted on us, not to mention that it creates more support issues if you're using granite. However, we also don't eat every meal at the island or sit there a long time. My understanding is that the higher the stools are, the less knee room you need because your legs are not angled under the counter the same way. Test it out! Like the other poster, I tend to sit with my legs on the bottom rung....See MoreBar Stools and Islands (how many per island)
Comments (27)even three in a row we don't tend to use. I wish I would have made room to do two at the peninsula and 1 at the end and 2 around the corner facing the living room. we currently could fit 5 at our peninsula with one at the end but only with kids does that ever happen. they love it though:)...See Morefnzzy
