I"m going to with 4 stools with the same sized island, but I really don't have a need for more. I think 5 would be squished. One of the problems with putting it on the end by your breakfast room is the width of the overhang will probably be only 15" or so. Considering you should figure 24" per person/stool; that would be too small for comfort.

What size will the average posterior parked there be?

With 5 stools, that'll be almost 22 inches per stool...2 inches short of the 'recommended', which I think is generous. At our last house we had 5 backless, but good-sized, stools in about 7 ft. We had a 6th we put in when needed, and it was workable. As long as you don't want extra wide stools, I think you'll be fine.

Here is a photo, keeping in mind that it's 2 ft shorter than what you'll have.

Napastyle has several stools with backs that are not bulky. I'm considering a couple of different ones.

How weird! I came into the forum to ask the same question! I will (*HOPEFULLY* IF my current house sells!) have an island that is 9" 6" and was pondering the same thing. I would also want stools that aren't real bulky, since it's a great room and just at the back of the island is where the family room space starts. The last thing I want is to feel cramped or to block the walkway between the island and the back of the sofa.

I am figuring with my added 6", the "guidelines" say I can have 4.75 stools there ;) So, maybe 5 would be ok? Not to hijack, but anyone have pictures of their 9 foot islands they want to share to help the OP and I out?

Mark out nine feet in length on your floor, and put five dining chairs or other chairs there and sit in them. Then you'll know how comfortable it would be to have five seated diners in that space. It isn't really about the size of the chair, it's the elbow room you want to get a feel for.

Since it's not just sitting that will be done, I recommend finding a way to either get 9' of boxes to test with or at least put 3 chairs next to each other w/the amount of space you will have, seating 3 people in the chairs, and then eat an actual meal, etc...5 people would be better to get a true feel for the space.

I think 5 would be fine if children or small adults are sitting there, but I think w/5 average adults it would be tight trying to maneuver around to eat or getting in and out of the stools.

We have 3 adults who would use the space daily, but 5 children who visit frequently. They range in age of 12 down to 3, so maybe having an extra stool available but not always at the island would be a solution. I think only having 3 there would look too empty.

I have a 8 ft bar and have 4 bar stools not crowded at all works great. 5 would work on the end of mine but it has a lg post on the end

Think of sitting at your dining room table - many extend to 108" (9'). When we put 4 on a side it's fine but when we try to squeeze that fifth in it is snug. It certainly will give you more of a real feel to what you are talking about then an abstract 22" of space.

Thought I would share I have the length of the island marked at 8’/9’/8’18”/9’18”. On the far end there are exactly 36” between island and wall. I can’t give more room down there because of the placement of the overhead lights. No chairs on that end. On the left side there is a 39” clearance with an (wide) open hallway to the foyer and spaces for fridge and cabinets on either side. For the width I have it marked at 4’ and 5’. I’d like to do the 5’ and reserve 18” of that as over hang. Not sure if we can do that with cabinet size availability. My hisband is doing the work, so I’ll be talking to him tomorrow about it. Will have our main sink/dishwasher/microwave on the inside right.

Iver will be directly across from the island on the right with counters and cabinets running all the way across.

Anyway, my plan is 4 seats on the left and 2 on the close end. We are a family of 5, 2 young adults and 1 going off to college, but want everyone to have a seat when we are together.
