cold brew coffee

I got a toddy cold brew system for Christmas. I love the system and quick access to a cup of coffee. I just don't like the coffee I used. What kind of coffee do you all use in your cold brew? I like strong non flavored coffee.

Never heard of cold brewed coffee, but I am going to try this tonight. We rarely drink hot coffee anymore, but I make a very strong pot of coffee, doctor it up and put it in the refrigerator for DH to drink all day at work. This might be even better. Thanks.

rachelellen, I totally understand wanting to stay in and have a picnic, especially if it's been a big day of driving. I've done that many times, very happy to have a cooler on hand. You pack a hot plate and a saucepan? Wow. What do you use for a hotplate? Bumblebeez, sometimes I just can't face another restaurant meal. It's less about the food I think, and sometimes about the amount of time it takes, or just not wanting to get back in the car. Seagrass, I grew up on liverwurst sandwiches and haven't had one years! That's a childhood memory that reminds me of my Dad, who loved them. bhevv, I've been known to stop at McDonald's for a cheeseburger. Sometimes nothing else will do. It's good you can find them anywhere U.S.A. Jim, No SPAM! No SPAM! (Although I respect your right to eat it whenever you want.) foodonastump, I know many people like you. It's not always about the destination for me. I find I enjoy myself more if I try to stay present in the journey as well. Of course, some journeys are more pleasant than others. sushipup, I've gotten into a habit of eating little meals, so a full restaurant meal is usually too much food, especially on the road. I try to order off the appetizer menu, or often a la carte, so there's not a lot leftover. It's less about snacking for me, than keeping level blood sugar. lpinkmountain, I like what's in your cooler. What's gorp? Indicanoe, that sounds like fun. Ah, the days of reasonable gas prices. I keep expecting it to go up shortly, just about the time I want to hit the road!

I know this thread is a couple weeks old, and since I don't drink coffee at all (*gasp*), I really have no opinion on how to store it or make it. :-) That disclaimer aside, if you really like the convenience of having the coffee portioned out into filters ahead of time (which does seem like it would streamline your morning), but it's the *can* you don't like, do you have a nice stoneware cookie jar you might use instead? Something cute, that maybe you don't use for cookies anymore? I'm sure freshness is an issue (I'm a tea drinker - freshness is super-important there), so if you put either a large ziplock bag in the jar, or simply cover the rim with plastic wrap before you put the lid on, that should help keep the coffee fresh. Or what about a nice pantry/countertop jar that has the seal on the rim (like they sell for flour/sugar)...that would keep everything sealed up nicely, and your coffee would still be portioned out for each day. Just a couple ideas for alternate storage solutions, assuming you like having it all portioned out ahead of time (sounds like it works great to me!). :-)

I guess I don't see the reasoning for a double run. Suggests to me that your coffeemaker isn't working right. My percolator has NO problem getting the coffee hot enough! Even my le-cheap drip unit gets the brew plenty hot. I'm with you Jasdip. "Cans" of coffee are disappearing, although it's funny that even Keurig has realized that most people want more than one cup of coffee and are making a pot brewer! Sad part is so many have to have the caramel, vanilla, turnip and roadkill flavored "coffee". Never made sense to me, if people don't like the taste of coffee, why drink it? Trying to fit in I suppose. But these days people have to have sugar on/in everything. Meat, vegetables, beverages, medications, everything. And they wonder why they're overweight.

We used to make cold brew coffee to take camping. We just put a pound of coffee in a two quarts of water (I think that was the quantity) and it was easy and great for camping.
We strained it through a strainer lined with several layers of cheesecloth.

I used a system years ago and liked it, but if you love the smell of brewing coffee you're out of luck.
I've copied a bit of info:

Do try this at home

For cold-process coffee, you need two ingredients, coffee beans and water. Buy quality beans, and make sure they are Arabica (not Robusta). It's easiest to grind them at the store since you'll be doing a whole pound at one time. Grind them on a "coarse" setting. Do not use a grind that would work in a drip maker or you will clog the filter and end up with a mess.

Since coffee is 98 percent to 99 percent water, it pays to use good water. Use tap, filtered or bottled water. Avoid distilled water because the absence of minerals will leave the coffee tasting flat.

You do need a special cold-process coffee maker. For a Toddy, order from their Web site, www.toddycafe.com. The decanter and brew container, plug and two filters cost $34.95.

To recap, place the "brewing" container with the plug and filter in place over the carafe. Add a specified amount of water and coffee. Elapsed time, 6 minutes. The coffee "brews" for 12 hours. Pull the plug and coffee concentrate streams into the carafe.

A good ratio is one part coffee concentrate to three parts water, milk or cream. In recipe form, add 1/4 cup concentrate to a mug and add 3/4 cup of hot water just off the boil for an 8-ounce mug.

The concentrate is especially good for iced and frozen drinks and desserts. It really shines in iced coffee that is notorious for being watered down and weak. For parties, make up coffee ahead and store it in a pre-heated thermos carafe. It also can be frozen in ice cube trays and used as needed.
