Look under video(s) or videographer in the Yellow Pages. You'll find lots who do those conversions. I do them, but you'd surely find someone locally.

Keep that screen. You're going to need it one day since projectors are very much back in style. Now, they are for projecting DVD videos and those projectors are rather costly but will come down in price. You or family members will likely get one at some point. If you really don't want to keep it, you'll have no problem at all getting it sold. If I had any money, I'd buy it myself.

I was just eating breakfast with the Rose Bowl Parade in the background thinking of my husband's home movies that I had put on cd's and on one of them it has the Rose Bowl Parade on it from the 1940's or 50's. I saw an ad in the local paper (back when we lived in IL) and that is how I found the guy to transfer them. I'm not sure where you would look. His ad mentioned video transfers. How funny that he too had the cartoons.

I took all my old ones to Kits Camera and they did it for me. I think they are also known as Ritz Camera. It was around $70..I also had extras made for all the family. Kathy

My mo has BOXES of Super 8s and 9mm (not sure if they are the same). I have tried toget her to get them converted but her grandmother is inthem and doesn't trust anyone to transfer them. If you can get your projector to work, you can show themon a wall and the use a new VHS camera to tape them. Not the best quality but then you cna have them professionally transfered and still have a back-up.

There are lots of directions onthe internet about how to do it yourself but I just haven't had time to do hers.

There is a place in Phoenix AZ that does things like that. We were going to send our slides there but my DH found a thing off the internet from Germany that he converted from slides to CVR (I-think) to the the computer. He could even "correct" the colors etc due the age of the slides.
Anyone interested, will try to find out name and where he bought it. It is complicated (for me)

We had alot of these put on CD. We've still thousands of feet of movie film we could convert but it's just too expensive to have it all done. My father was a movie nut. He always had the camera in his hands. We have movies from the day we were born. We just do some each year. I'd hate to lose them, they're just to precious and funny!

DS took mine to a place in a mall years ago and they put them on VCR tapes. I'm glad becaue I have the memories of all the kids when they were younger. I've also made copies on my own VCR machines. Maybe you could project it once on your screen and video tape that . at least you'd have a copy and then get them to a processing place.

Thanks all for the info and comments. I don't know how soon I'll look further into it. mush is right! They're just too precious to lose...so do they set in a box on a shelf forever...or do I take the plunge and have them converted???

I think I'll keep the screen, as bestlawn suggested. Maybe my kids will get a projector DVD player. I know they will before we will...ha!

Marie reminds me you can do it yourself. You need a capture card in the computer. They're available in all price ranges and come with either analog or DV inputs or both. Most have software with them to do editing. With the software, you can add special effects, transitions between scenes, and ability to manipulate the footage. Even if it doesn't come with software, you do at least have Windows Movie Maker on the computer that will do fine for you.

If by chance you're running Windows 98, you cannot do it. 98 can't handle the frame rates or the large files that video creates, and they are EXTREEEEMELY large. 98 also cannot manage more than 512mg of memory, so that makes it more than difficult to render to DVD. If you're running Window XP, you won't have a problem, but you have to make sure you have enough system resources. You need a hard drive with enough storage space and enough free space to accommodate these large files. You need at least 1gig memory and at least P3 (or equivalent) processor if not faster.

Rendering takes forever, so try not to do any more than two hours at a time. One hour - 90 minutes might be best. If it doesn't render well or hangs up, you'll know you have to cut it down to less than one hour and just put the rest on a separate DVD.

It's really very easy to do, or one of your children might like to get into it since it's hard to trust someone with your memories. Buying a capture card and even if upgrading the computer is necessary, it still won't cost nearly as much as paying a business to do it for you. It's a very time consuming process, so understandably they will charge for that. For example, rendering just one can take 8-12 hours depending on how long it is. I usually just let them render over night. You'd absorb the cost in the first one or two that you do though.

I took my parents old 8mm to a camera shop here in town and they transferred them to DVD for me. I then came home and made copies for my brothers and sisters. It's expensive if you have them duplicate them for you. If you have a DVD burner on your computer or know someone who does, do it that way. It is so nice though to ba able to watch them without getting out the old 8mm projector! It's well worht it because some day they will go bad....I'd hate to lose all of those memories!
