My Sister-in-law's brother and wife are visiting from Southern California.

After a few minutes of small talk the wife asks "Have you had some work done?"

Me: "Well, I had a new roof put on last spring"

Wife: "No, have you had work done on yourself"

Me: "I work out if thats what you mean"

Wife: "No, any enhancements?"

Me: "Enhancements? Like hair extensions?"

(By this time I'm begining to feel like a real Rube)

Wife: "You know, surgury"

Me: "No, is something wrong, I feel pretty healthy")

Wife: "Enhancements, like botox

(Now I finally make the connection)

Me: "No, do you think I need to?"

Wife: "I was just asking because you look pretty put together for someone your age"

(MY AGE?)

Me: "Well, thanks, I guess the kids keep me young"

Wife: "Then I need to borrow your children"

Me: "HaHa"

So now we have changed the topic and small talk for awhile about our kids.

So, I'm thinking "enhancements" are something that is discussed every day where she lives?

Is she a nut case or what............

Thank you all for your posts.I'll try to answer all your questions. "if this were your biological son who abused your step daughter, how would you handle the situation??" I would do everything in my power to help him and make any sacrifices that were required of me. But the problem is that my husband is not willing to ignore the rest of his children and focus on helping him.He has alot of anger towards him because of what he did to his other siblings.He doesn't feel comfortable showing the girls affection because he doesn't want them to think he is trying to be sexual...One of the twin boys has also been really affected by the abuse and is really confused as to his "sexuality" he seems to thik he has to act feminine because of it.To top it off,my husband has never had a close relationship with the oldest at all.When his wife left and he was alone raising the 4 children he took on his moms role and was very abusive toeards everyone,including my husband.He blames his xwife and his mother for making him the monster he has become and he just doesn't want to spend the rest of his life dealing with his mental illness.HIs x wife left him because she couldn't she deal with him anymore.although he is too young to be diagnosed,i honestly believe that he is a manic deppressive like his mother.I can only imagine what he will be like a few years from now if he indeed is-because he has so many other issues along with that.The fact that the 2 women who raised him were both selfish,controlling,deceitful,cunning and verbally abusive doesn't do much for his personality either because this is exactly what he is like.I feel for him, i truly do..but i don't want to spend my life trying to undo such horrible parenting.I never would have gotten married had i known that i would have to neglect my own children to help fix this child in the first place.The fact that he also abused my daughter adds the fact that my daughter would probably resent me for the rest of my life for having put her abuser's needs ahead of hers and i don't think anyone would be willing to do that. "Don't you think he deserves a chance to heal and become the best he can be? Why throw the baby out with the bath water? His behavior is a loud cry for help. Someone needs to answer the call." I agree someone does need to answer that call,the problem is that the only person who is willing to take him in and raise him is the grandmother-who thinks he is just misunderstood and spoils him to death.She basically excuzes all his bad behaviors and tries to justify his cruelty to others by saying that he can't help it because of the way his mom raised him.So he is never held accountable-and he plays right into it and pulls on her heart strings every time he is in trouble so that she can bail him out.This little boy lies,steals,beats other kids up,runs out of the classroom in school,yells at the teachers,refuses to bath with soap,thros dirty toilet paper on the floor,breaks whatever he gets a hold of when he is angry,has full blown tantrums that last for hours,is direspectful to adults in general and cruel to animals and she says its normal because he is becoming a teenager...My husband can't stand his mother because of it so it makes co-parenting virtually impossible because she will ignore my husband and do whatever she wants with him.I know that she is not what he needs-but what am i suppose to do?Put everyone elses's needs on the backburner to try and make him the best he can be? Its not fair to the other kids-especially his that have had to live in his shadow all of their lives.Besides i am dealing with alot of guilt since i was spending so much time trying to "help" him,exhausted and streched to my limit-i wasn't emotionally available to the rest of the children when he was abusing them.Maybe if i hadn't been so tied up deling with him all day my daughter would have come to me sooner...or i would have picked up on signs that it was going on.Because thinking back,there were many signs-i was just too drained to put them all together. if you abandon the marriage now, no one will heal from the harm that has been done. I agree with that statement totally,I love my husband and my stepkids but i have stayed in this relationship mostly because i want these children to have some closure from the harm that has been done.I don't think i could live with myself knowing that i just ran away from this situation not to have to "deal" with it.Its important for all of us to get through this,it will teach them a valuable lesson in life.We shouldn't "run away" from things,we should confront them and find a way to overcome them... Are there other relatives around who will take on the responsibility of the SS ? Unfortunetely the only relative availableand willing is the grandmother. My husband would not be willing to move out and stay with him,he has a hard time going to the visits to see him and when he does he usually comes home feeling all mixed up.He says he has conflicted feelings,he loves him because he is his son,but he acts so much like his xwife and his mother-who he can't stand to even speak of,that he feels as if he is just just like them..I think they call it "transference" in other words he sees him and he sees "controlling,abusive,crazy mother and x wife" whom he chose to get out of his life when he realized that their toxic behaviors were making him "physically ill".This is his son-and he is just as toxic as they are.I think he struggles with the fact that he is so much like the two women who have caused im so much pain and misery in his life and nomatter what he does he is destined to have to deal with his toxic son for the rest of his life.Its just all really complicated...Right now i am just focusing on the kids i am raising and helping them heal from the trauma they suffered. There is no way i could focus on his oldest and remain sane.Its just too overwhelming.

I don't much care about saving 15cents a month or whatever. I should be lucky enough to live long enough to receive that payback. I do care, however, that we have plenty of hot water when everyone visits so I am not scheduling everyone for showers the next morning at dinner the night before. Can someone please just give me an honest answer about whether tankless would likely work for us. Uh, Wldsyd, I'll repeat what I wrote 4 messages above yours. That is that the President of Rinnai America himself said you should not buy a tankless heater if your goal is to save money or to save gas. Particularly in a cold climate, the gas usage for a tankless can be really high. He said you should buy a tankless because you want endless hot water. Also, it has the advantage of a much smaller footprint than a traditional tank. That should answer your question. If you are all so angry that you can't even stomach and tolerate questions from homeowners who truly do not understand the technology and are simply trying to make good, long term choices, then why hang out on these forums? Can't you imagine that after 11 months of living in the middle of a major remodel I don't need anybody attacking me. Thanks for the sarcasm. In defense of Peteyboy's response to you, what I saw in your message was a challenge that said that despite all the previous 140+ posters, you still weren't provided enough information, despite posters' links, despite professional plumbers and installers opinions, despite lengthy explanations of why people felt pro or con, despite explanations of the necessary venting and gas line changes involved in tankless, despite opinions from the tankless owners who'd been living with them. You dismissed it all by saying people had "personal agendas", that the several professional responses were "those that are simply hell bend against change b/c they don't, perhaps, have the expertise to do the installs". With 140+ responses, none of which you found helpful, I cannot blame Peteyboy for his message. BTW, you can also do a search on this Forum for "tankless", and you will come up with many more threads if you seeking more information than what was provided in this one.

After reading all of the above posts I just have to wonder...what must it be like for THESE CHILDREN to have to ask their stepparent if they can call them mom or dad? What is it like for THESE CHILDREN to be introduced as step or half or my husband's/wife's kid? I am quite certain of one thing-it is so dang hard to be a kid these days. It is so dang hard to try to fit in at school, in sports, let alone two different households. How must they feel? How alone or how confused? Why not just do what makes them comfortable? I personally have no experience with stepparents. My own parents have been married for 32 years. However, my mom has experience with every type of HORRIBLE stepparent that has ever lived. Her stepmother used to make HER daughters peanut butter and jelly and made my mom and her sisters freakish cheap lunchmeat sandwhiches. She burned all the baby pictures of my mom an her sisters and did absolutely unspeakable things I won't even mention. And do you know what she told me when I started dating a man with kids? She said, "I never wanted to be a stepmom because of my experiences as a kid. But I made a decision very early on that if I were ever to become a stepmom, I was going to be the best damn one that ever lived!" So here I am, and I'm going to be the best damn stepmom that ever lived. And if my stepkids are more comfortable being introduced as 'my kids' or if the day comes when they want to call me mom, or whatever have you, I'm going to do my best to make them feel good. BECAUSE IT'S NOT ABOUT ME!!! IT'S ABOUT THESE PRECIOUS CHILDREN!!! And I love them!

I think many things are happening at the same time. Yes , your SM does picture you the way you were at 18, pot smoking etc.etc.. Over the years of you 'fixing' yourself, she didn't see this improvement so off the bat she will be defensive of you returning into her life. BUT it also sounds to me, that she did have pent up frustration over he years, maybe at you, maybe at your dad and its all surfacing now. I dont believe you are bad, that you did anything wrong. I think the JR has fixed view of you when you were in your 'bad' time and sees no change. PLUS she maybe going through her own issues now..you nver know maybe she is depressed or going throuhg menal pause. or having marital problems with you dad that you are unaware of. BUt its obvious her anger has focuses on you and your daughter. I also had a 'evil ' stepmother wheni was young after my mother died. The second SM was great. Just like JR. Friendly like a school teacher and friend. I'm friends with her too. BUT i also went through a bad stage in my life and also had a falling out with my sm. There was a 7 year lapse between my sm, dad and me. I didn't call and if i did they would be angry and hate me...etc... It took a few years for both sides to rekindle a relationship and alot of coffee talk etc... So do not be discouraged with your SM. I think she feels resentful about your daughter because you were with a man who was violent and in most cases woman choose to end their pregnancy because of that. Were you on drugs during that time as well? did your sm or family know this? She is fixed on your past, she needs to see and hear all the good stuff , all the change you have made. In the end, ifyou truly value you relationship with her, i think baby steps are in order, the way i did with my SM. I liked my sm alot. I was hurt to tears for many years by her when she turned around and also said hurtful things like you are going through. Though i never did drugs i was a loner and aggressive etc..etc..Misunderstandings did occcur between me and her and as i said it tooks years to rekindle a relationship. My advice to you is to not let this consume you. i think speaking to both your dad and her will help. Sure, you had a kids she doens't agree with , its wont make your daughter disappear. She is a woman has to accept that but you daughter should not be punished for your 'poor' judgement. i think that is very important for you to convey this to JR. Basically saying, yes i F up in the past, but my daugther should not be crucified for my wrong doings and solo parenting. Maybe you sm does have an issue being called grandma...dont knw..But you both need a break from one another and you both need to take baby step to rekindle a relationship, IF that is what you want. You could also cut her off....but are you will to also cut your brothers off...and your daughter from her grandfather? You cannot force JR to love your daughter. That is her own issue here. BUT dont expose your daughter unsupervised anymore there if she shows little concern for her either. Visit as a family but for the meantime, dont leave your daughter for those one day breaks for yourself. Depend on someone else now until things can be resolved. And nivea, i know how you feel about father's lack of involvment...my father first marriage with 1st sm was very much like that....marry a woman to 'raise ' me but he had no concern of me...And we had a family meeting and he admitted that he married to have someone for his kids. We told him our mother is long gone and he should marry someone for himself. So..second marriage was MUCH better....i've had my ups and downs with her but now having my own family i see i have more respect and understanding with her position and we've rekindled a friendship.

Some people are obsessed with finding the "fountain of youth". Gheesh, how about embracing your age, instead of trying to defy it? She sounds like she's one who is trying to defy it...too bad for her ;o)

Yes. It's kind of a South Cali thing. My friends from down there are always talking about saving up for some face lift thing or something. Of course these same friends won't go to the dentist to get their rotting teeth fixed which would be a far better improvement. Go figure.

Amused, that's what my reaction would be. I don't think I would have been able to contain my laughter. "You look pretty put together for someone your age." Hearing someone embarrass themself by such a tactless comment would have me rolling on the floor laughing til a cried. That kind of comment says more about her than it does about you.

She must be one of those "Wives From Orange County". Someone told me about that show and I watched it once. AMAZING All you can do is feel sorry for those people whose priorities are so out of line.
I know some very nice people in Southern CA so please don't let me offend anyone. It's just that I also know from personal experience and the TV show that there are some pretty shallow ones there, also. Just like everywhere.
You need to buy this woman an etiquette book for Christmas.

Stephanie, I'm pretty gullible and I usually think of what I should have said after the opportunity is gone. If I had known what she was talking about from the begining, I probably wouldn't of been to contain my laughter either.
Wildchild, that's probably why she didn't give a second thought about asking me. I wish I had had a jar of jelly beans or something and had given it to her and told her to take "one a day" to cure all facial sun damage (because she really needed it...meow)

Wildchild, it is not a So. CA thing!!! I've lived and worked here all my life and almost never hear conversation about having work done.

Wife is obviously a shallow, poor mannered person, and we have plenty of those in every state of the union.

Toni is right, don't make an issue of it. It was kind of funny though.

Depends on what area you are in CA. Lived there for over 70 years now in the midwest, and yes this was discussed without a problem. Kind of a LA culture things. Here Cancer is discussed freely because people care, there just talking about it is a Big NO NO. DH has a friend who refuses to communicate with us because DH has cancer--guess it is congegious by mail--someone forgot to tell me.

Yes, it is definitely a southern California topic. My sons have commented to me that when they were in high school, many a girl graduate got surgical breast implants for their graduation present from the parents. It starts young in some circles.

It is a South Orange County thang :) That is where the OC Housewives live in Cota a gated community. They are so ugly and plastic and think they deserve so much in life.

OPPS no offence to my Southern Cali friends~~I just think it is so funny how so many people think what happens on shows like that and all the junk in Hollywood is what we are all about.

I am a So Cal gal, I live inland and I do know lots of gals that have gotten touch ups and boobies. One gal I worked with got her DD boobies for a college graduation gift?? She even took out a loan out for them! My DD got a Lap top:)

Southern Ca? I live in the back woods in south Georgia and I hear these conversations all the time. All 3 of my SIl and several of my friends have had several plastic surgeries. Most of them are in their 40s. They are always telling me what I need to have done. I just laugh. After surviving cancer twice, it is just not on my list of things to do.

I live in So CA, born and raised here.....I only hear about those conversations. I personally don't know anyone that shallow. My soon to be DIL works in Manhattan Beach in a spa. She says the ladies that come in there are all very
up-ity and snooty. Most are very rude and she does all she can to bite her tongue sometimes! Very high maintance women in the beach communities. Is she from the beach areas? The rudeness would be expected then I guess LOL!

I agree with Mammie. I would be flattered but I would also take it with a grain of salt, considering the source. lol I guess it's safe to assume that you don't see this person very often, so at least you don't have to listen to her much. :)
