Switching Internet Providers???

I am planning on switching to DSL from dialup sometime soon. Centurytel will send me a new modem.

What do I need to do? I know I will get a new email address. Do I need to save my address book somehow? Will I lose all my old emails in my inbox? My bookmarks are safe right (I've got over 200 and don't want to lose them)? Any Tips to make this switch painless??

I hate change, but sure am looking forward to faster surfing!

You may be able to keep the old email address depending on who the provider is. If it's AOL, for example, you can keep it for free.

Most emails accounts have a way to transfer your mail from one to another. Check with your current provider to see if that account has a way, and check with Centurytel.

Your bookmarks don't have anything to do with email, do they? I'm sure that's a browser feature, such as Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, etc. If your provider also provides the browser you use, then yes save the bookmarks. Just create another folder and copy & paste them there. You can transfer them back later into the new browser's bookmarks directory.

Just don't have the current account shut down until you've ironed out all your concerns.

I've had half a dozen providers probably over the years. I have never used the email addys provided by any of them, so when I switched, I never had to inform anyone of a new addy.

I've always used Hotmail (free) for my main one, and a Yahoo account for occasional use. If I ever get another one, I'd like to try gmail...have heard good things about it.

Congrats on getting DSL! I'll bet you are excited as all get out.

And if you go with Charter, (and they don't want you to know this) you can "negotiate" price. My son called them for me, asked for the "Retention" department and told them he was getting lots of attractive offers from competitors. They lowered the price $30/month for a year! Linda-Your box arrived today. I love everything! You're sensational!!! Linda sent me the most amazing tropical plants. Cuttings from her Mother's Day Plants (Linda I had to look these up and I'm so excited to receive them)-Clerodendrum thomsoniae (Bleeding Glory-Bower) and Pandorea jasminoides 'Charisma' (Variegated Pandora Vine). Also Linda's favorite Coleus 'Stained Glassworks Trailing Plum'. There was a card in the box with stories on all the plants she sent. I love having a story to tell when I show people my plants. I also received 3 fans of Iris 'Above Board', Stokes Aster and Oxalis triangularis. I was very excited about the new Passiflora Chave. This plant was hybridized in Spain and newly registered. Linda traded for it. I also received gardening gloves, a Lucky Clover Grow Kit, a gardening sign that reads 'Life is a Garden tend it with Joy' and a Sea Horse water diffuser. I know just what pot I'm going to put this in. Plus there were seeds, 3 different Daylily seeds, Gerbera Daisy and Morning Glory Tree. Linda thank you so much for everything. Have you tried opening a second Internet Explorer (or whatever browser you are using) window by going to 'file' and 'new' and using one window to go the gardenweb forum and the other window to go to flickr? maybe you won't lose the copied info if you are working with different windows instead of using the back button?

I'd take the deal (considering the price is right for you). The same thing happened to me several years ago. We purchased an historic home in-town and the inside was simply beautiful with wonderful wood work, floors etc. plus the previous owners had remodeled the kitchen and bathrooms to current standards. It was a great mix of old charm and modern necessities. The outside of the home needed some work. We had the exterior of the home painted in historic colors with 5 color trim, etc. I relandscaped the yard and added a few touches. We lived in the home only 3 years. One evening I discovered a letter in our mailbox indicating this couple loved our home and wanted to buy it if/when we wanted to sell. The letter indicated their friends lived down the street and heard we may be thinking of moving. While we weren't serious considering or looking at other properties, we were thinking of starting a family and my wife wanted a home in a suburban development surrounded by other young families. I called the lady (she was an attorney) and told her our pie-in-the-sky price. She said she would discuss it with her husband and let me know. The next morning they called and bought the house at our asking price. They had only two conditions, they wanted the side porch swing and a water fountain in the rear yard. Done Deal! We closed in 45 days, no realtor fees, no showings to nosey neighbors and lookie-loo's.

I'm in the same boat, switching this coming Wed. and I'm concerned as well..It better be an easy transition, this old puppy can't take too many new changes....

It shouldn't impact your Inbox or your received messages or your favorites - as long as you aren't changing operating systems (like from Win2000 to XP or from XP to Vista.

If you are currently with Centurytel and just upgrading from dialup to DSL, I don't think your email address will change either. ??
