Hiya I'm Jovi, remember me?

We "met" on this forum when I was a tiny pup.

I visited occasionally and you got to see that sometimes pups just gotta get down and dirty.

You got to see my first obsession, BALL!

This past weekend there was a chill in the air and it seemed almost like fall had finally arrived in Georgia.

It was a great time for me to be entered in my very first agility trial! I got one first place and two second places and Mom was so happy!!! She says not because of the placements but because I was happy running in the ring. It's a different place than where we train so it was brand new to me. I liked it!

I'm going to add a link to one of our trial videos. This is the "standard" run on the first day of the trial....standard just means that there's equipment (dogwalk, seesaw) in the course instead of just jumps. I got first place on this run!!!

I'm still considered a "baby dog" in agility, I'm only 16 months old, but I'm working at being the very best baby dog out there!

Thanks again everyone! I'm inspired to expand, and to try to become more and more self sufficient. I will most likely cultivate the 900 sq ft area outside the cage in the fall or next spring. Socks, right now I've been sharing basil and Armenian cucumbers with friends as those are incredibly prolific and we are having trouble keeping up. As for the other vegetables, my family and I will have no problem eating everything - there are 6 of us and we're all vegetarian. Canyonsister, I started all my tomatoes, peppers, basil, and eggplant by seed indoors at the beginning of January. I then started all the cucumbers, squash, cantaloupes, watermelons in mid February. I transplanted everything in mid March and directed seeded beans, more squash and cucumbers. In April I direct seeded okra, tepary beans and more cantaloupe. With heavy mulching, close planting, and shade cloth most things are holding up very well to the 100+ degree heat right now. In the winter, I wasn't as well organized but I did have a small selection of greens (kale, broccoli, rapini, arugula, lettuce etc) as well as beets, carrots, spring onions, peas, bok choy etc. You can start seeding the fall/winter vegetables as early as August and September if you provide some protection from the heat incase it stays in the 90's all the way up to November as it did this last season. Basically, you can seed, grow and harvest something in Phoenix year round!

Well, about time! A Border Collie (or Aussie) without a frisbee is like uh, uh, uh, well, I dunno, but it's simply wrong:>) My first Aussie was a ball nut too. With our second, I learned the extra agility and finesse that goes into frisbee 'work'. More of a true job for them than the ball catching, I think. Of course, it helps if the thrower has some agility, too. I was never good enough for her, but DH could make her really work for the catch, and she was soooo proud. When she missed one it was usually the thrower's error and I'd mutter, "oh, that was mama's fault", until I realized that, to her, it probably was the same as saying " bad catch, girl". I see the great workout that occurs when the ball tosser uses one of those cup things, but it looks a bit mindless to me: run and catch over and over, vs. utilizing the keen, uncanny eye and swift cutting moves that makes frisbee play mimic sheep herding. Thanks again for sharing; you know how we love seeing him...gorgeous pup!

We're back from Savannah! Flyleft, Jovi is very quick to learn new behaviors. Teaching a dog to weave can, seriously, take months. Some of that depends on the dog and some on the trainer but generally speaking it will take the average dog and handler more than one month. Mason, who I thought was incredibly quick, learned in about 2 weeks. Jovi blew me away by learning in 5 days. Really! She does all the equipment perfectly now. We're working the finer points of handling and some more advanced handling techniques. I don't want to push her since she's still very young so I suspect that I won't start entering her in trials until about Oct/Nov this year. Or early next, still pondering. Faron, the boy dogs do seem drawn to her and she's a bit of a hussy with them. Probably just as well that I'm going to have her spayed next Thursday. :-) Speaking of which, I found out that I can have a laprascopic spay done. Isn't that wonderful?! With a traditional spay you have to keep a dog "quiet" for about 10 days. Laprascopic the time drops to about 3 days. Costs a bit more but, given the recovery benefits and it being so much less invasive I think it's well worth the cost. I'm still going to be a basket case next week when she's undergoing the procedure!

Nice seedlngs, Rob. Good selections of seeds. I got some seedlings wrap which is used by the forestry industry for shipping/wrapping seedlings for shipment. To flimsy. I watched a video of FB the other day on a woman doing grafting similar to the way your video you posted. She used a heavier weight plastic film. I started using the small plastic baggies you can get at the craft store here (Micheal's) and they come a multitude of sizes. I believe they are sold for beads. I get large ones and medium ones. Cut of the top ziploc part for putting over top of scion/rootstock or the large ones I cut top off and sides to open up and drop right over top and secure with elastic bands. On a few "V" grafts. I tapes around the union site and enclosed the whole tree (small) inside a large plastic bag and zapped it closed to create added humidity in bag. Opened it up every few days to exchange the air. This was with a Arabicum rootstock + Swazicum top scion. Worked out really well. My thoughts on the Flat grafts based on what I see with the ones I have received. Is that the small scion used (about 1/2 - 2/3 the caliper of root stock) the scion almost disappears after time. Something to try next. Rick

Thanks everyone! I was so very proud of Jovi at the trial. It wasn't so much the placements, it was how well she was performing in an entirely new (to her) location.

We ran 4 times and she got one 1st place and two 2nd places. That's really great for a baby dog!

And, I'll put a link to the one jump she didn't Q (qualify) on. I love that run even though it wasn't one of the placement ones. It was the very last run and we were both getting more comfortable, working with more distance and moving faster. She dropped the bar at the last jump becasue, by the end of the day, the ground had dried out and the jump was in a sandpit...that shifted when she took off. Shoot, I almost lost my footing there too.

Anyway, I love this run!

Absolutely delightful. Jovi is a beauty, and smart and talented, too. Love the pix and video, and all of "Jovi's" comments. I know that you feel you are so lucky to have her, and you are, but she is also clearly happy and loved because of you.

Oh my goodness...I *love* that dear dog. She loves you too. They grow up so fast, though, don't they? Is she really 16 months already?!

Watching her gives me shivers.
