YORK Split System - Opinions?

Hello and thanks for taking the time to help. I'm replacing a 19 year old package system

with a YORK split system. Current package system is 2.5 ton located under a deck and all

companies say I should go with a split system instead. I live in east TN, house is a single

story with 1300 square feet and 10 registers.

The system I'm leaning towards as quoted by one company:

YORK Heat Pump Model # YHJF3054151 2.5 ton from their new LX series.

YORK Air Handler Model # F6F042H06T3X

HONEYWELL Pro 8000 Thermostat

Questions: Does this set up definitely qualify for the tax credit? I've looked everywhere

for these two model numbers and am coming up empty.

Are these two main components well matched for each other?

Is air handler variable speed? Is that truly important?

Yes, that qualifies for tax credit. AHRI # 3388512

I couldn't find the air handler on York's website but I'd have to believe it is variable speed. Can't get high efficiency without out them.

Good equipment, but key to an job like this is best possible installer.

Loonie I think it uses the X13 motor, but I'm not sure. Here's the data on it. I was actually looking at this model the other day.

I am in San Diego 5 miles from the coast. Winters and Summers are both mild...Winter lasts for 3 - 4 months, Summer about 4 - 5. Funnycide is correct, I currently have an old Day/Night gas furnace and no AC. I am trying to get the new Furnace installed in the rafters of my garage, but the City of San Diego wants me to rebuild the whole thing to accomodate the unit and 6 service techs (a little sarcasm, sorry). I understand needing some structural checks and balances, but it has gone waaaay past ridiculous here. A word to the wise about remodeling within the boundaries of the City of San Diego...don't. Not worth it. Anyway, thanks all for your help.

Pacific coast. Fairly mild climate, temps running averaging between 37-76 through the year. Some years it does snow (occasionally over a foot). Temps have gotten to 0, but actually rarely get as low 10, and at the other end not very often are they over 90. I wondered the same thing on the heat strips. I believe that I was told the power available for old strips was 20kw. Is the thermostat one you are familiar with? Thanks!

York YM9M isn't variable speed. Request a Honeywell VisionPRO IAQ (preferably, if not the VisionPRO 8000 will be fine) as it can slow the blowers down to dehumidify on demand and is an overall nice thermostat. The Affinity is a nice line of units, so you may want to look at the YCB 13 SEER Affinity line. Not a big fan of 2-stage A/C. I think single stage properly sized is more than sufficient with dehumidification controls (the IAQ). It's never a bad idea to get 2-3 bids for a job like this. Did they size the equipment per a load calculation (called Manual J)? Did they make sure your ductwork was adequate? More goes into this than just the equipment.

I am not sure what you are looking for. You do not provide any model details on the system itself, efficiency, and it's age. One can assume that nat gas is not available. I would want to know the propane heating costs for the past several years. Is propane used for any other purpose other than heating? What is electric rate and current propane cost/gallon. Generally propane follows the cost of home heating oil. Your options are probably very limited. You just need to get educated in what you are getting into. Maybe geothermal a possibility down the road. IMO
