Carrier HVAC pricing

I'm about to replace a 3 ton heat pump in the downstairs of my home. I have the following quote for a Carrier performance 16 system 3 ton heat pump. Is this price good and does it look like a solid system? Any glaring issues? I'm in south Alabama and it will be the downstairs unit in the home which is 2465 sq ft, 1790 down and 675 up.

I assume you realize this system qualifies for small Fed Tax Credit.

Pricing is not bad.

How do you filter return air?

One suggestion. I would want the 005 air handler for better performance/efficiency numbers. Don't accept a price increase.

New and correctly sized lineset?

Otherwise a great system.

I have a single return air on each floor filtered by your standard 24x24x1 filter.

I'm told the lines will be flushed and reused. There was no discussion about the sizing. The house was built in 2000 and has the original system. The lines are behind a brick wall so I don't think changing them would be an easy task.

Can elaborate on the 005 air handler. Is that just a different size in the same model?

I'm learning more all the time. Can you tell me more about the TXV metering device for the E-Coil? My current 80% unit already has a condensate drain pump used when I run the AC in the summer and I have not had a problem with it. This self contained pump sits on the floor next to the furnace and pumps the condensate into my sump pump then the sump pump pumps it out of the house. Wouldn't I just run the high efficiency furnace moisture drain pipe out to the same pump? I have to imagine that moisture drain pipe is up high on the High Efficiency unit and my condensate pump is on the floor, gravity will do the job unless the pump fails and the water backs up into the furnace. Is that the same moisture drain pipe that I have on my current 80% efficiency furnace that drains the condensate when I run the AC in the summer? One of the quotes I got from a HVAC hybrid install (95% efficient furnace w/ 2 stage variable speed furnace and 15 or 16 SEER Heat Pump) was to put a catch pan under the furnace with the furnace up on blocks and put a pump in the drain pan that pumps the condensate water into my sump pump. This gives you more time to deal with a pump going bad vs the self contained pump I have currently. I have another question about buying the new 95% efficient furnace. My current furnace is 80% effecient and is 100,000 BTUs. I have replacement choices of 90,000 BTU or 115,000 BTU replacement. My house is 2000 sq. ft, not including basement. Is there much efficiency difference between the 2 choices? I know the bigger unit will probably supply more heat, but is that at more cost in energy? Or is the difference nominal. My first thought is to go with the bigger unit for only $100-$200 more in cost. Mikes

The system proposed by the Carrier distributor does not include an Infinity controller. He is providing a Honeywell thermostat. Condenser is 24ACC636. Coil is either CNPVP3717. To repeat, the furnace is Infinity 80, model 58CVA090, 80% 90K BTU. He will price a whole house box filter for me, but as he explained it so me, its value to me looks pretty marginal. The American Standard distributor does not recommend a variable speed motor although he can provide one at a little higher price. His reason is that his experience has shown that the variable speed motors are more likely to burn out sooner and if not under warranty, they cost about $1250 to replace. I asked the Carrier distributor about experiences with the variable speed motor being more likely to burn out. He reports no troubles with variable speed motors and has been using them for 10 years of more. The ECM motors used are covered by ten-year warranty along with the rest of the equipment.

You left off the last number on the AC model. Did you get a quote for the 24ANB7? That is a two stage model. The 24ANB6 is the single stage version. For the 59TN6 80K furnace and 24ANB7 3 ton AC with the items you listed above I would expect to pay about $11K before any rebates in my area in NJ. I would think it would be less in where you are. I have no hard data other than what I paid for a similar system 6 years ago and quotes others have posted. Do a search on this forum to get an idea on pricing. The furnace price is reasonable, but the AC quote seems very high. Maybe you were quoted a 4 ton instead of a 3 ton. There are big price differences in each size of the 2-stage equipment.

Your most expensive quote is Carrier's best furnace and AC condenser. Very nice equipment but pricey. The 59MN7 is a modulating furnace. It is a variable speed furnace that can operate at many speeds. It is great for a zoning system. The other furnace to consider is the 59TN6. It is also has a variable speed blower but only a two stage gas valve. Since you live in Mass where winters are cold I recommend you get the best furnace you can afford. I think the 24VNA9 AC condenser is overkill. This is the AC only version of Carrier's Greenspeed heat pump. Get a quote on the 24ANB7 condenser. It is a 2-stage model. It will do a good job or removing humidity. The coil you were quoted is fine. You may be able to put in a larger coil if they are a valid AHRI match. The bigger coil has a little less static pressure and I think does a better job of humidity removal. You want the 4 inch media filter and the Infinity controller. WiFi is not necessary in my opinion. They only thing about WiFi that is somewhat important is the ability to upgrade the software. I would not spend any money on a UV or a air purifier. Are the linesets being changed? At these prices they should be. I am not sure why there is a big difference in zoning with your quotes. Carrier zone dampers have the ability to open partially, while others are completely opened or closed. He may be quoting the Infinity dampers on the first quote, but other dampers and controls on the others. You should ask for the details on this. These prices are the high end. Is the contractor offering the Carrier rebate? What about a labor warranty? Anything past the first year?

I would add another return for downstairs system.

I would verify that existing lineset to be flushed and reused is correct size to Carrier specification.

And yes the 005 air handler is a different size but same model. It will give you better performance/efficiency numbers and the model I would insist on.

I inquired about the 005 and he says there would have to be ductwork modifications to accomodate the size. He said the SEER would only go from 16.2 to 16.7 and in his opinion is not worth it. The additional cost would be 392.

He also confirmed that he would use the existing lines and that they are the correct size for the unit. He says he can replace them but they will have to run up the outside of the wall and would cost an additional $350.

Thoughts? I appreciate the feedback.

As long as lineset is correct size, then no issue as long as lines are flushed according to industry SOP .

I would want the 005 but no price increase, all on his dime, not yours. Better efficiency and more BTUs both cooling and heating.

And I would add a return to downstairs system. A single return for such a large area is never good, cheats airflow and comfort.

The government should have left the 12-SEER units legal to mfg'er & sell; some of them with TXV metering devices even delivered 13-SEER.

I would ask what duct modifications might be needed as the 003 and 005 units are the same physical size. Reference the bottom two rows of the table on page 4 of the below document.
