Possible 'Mega Storm' for the N.E., will you be in it?

Our weatherman here in OK. keeps saying "the perfect storm" in the N.E. could possibly happen early next week, due to tropical depression Sandy. He's calling it a "Mega Storm" and he really wants to be there. lol.

For those of you who live in the NE, what are you hearing? Are you getting prepared just in case?

It will get cold here, so for that I'm thankful. Beats the unusual 80s we've been having!

I'll be making a big pot of stewp...stew/soup...that we can microwave in case we lose power....generator runs microwave, but not ovens or cooktop....

Annie, are they predicting snow? It sounds like it could be a massive snow storm with hurricane winds, depending on the jet stream.

Another weatherman on the east coast said today it will be devastating.

We were without power for 30 days due to an ice storm here and it's not fun. At least the generator kept things going for us.

Long day. Its finally stopped about 11PM. 12" here, and probably very close to that at National Airport. Still lots of wind and blowing and drifting, but the skies are now clear. Yesterday, up until about 4am it was a "warm storm" with temps around 32. Its been below 20F since about 8am here. The snow held and held and held on for longer than expected. This was definitely the storm of a lifetime, EVEN IF we had not had the 2 feet here last weekend, just the sheer conditions this storm produced, especially the whiteouts, and the near hurricane force winds along with 4-6 foot drifts, countless downed trees...etc. etc. etc. was a once in a lifetime event here in the Mid Atlantic. However, since we did have 2 feet on the ground already, it was just all the more historic. TZ7, Be safe! I hope you guys dont get it as bad as we did here, especially in terms of the winds. Many of our streets look like the photos you posted, and some were with downed traffic signals. Post more pics if you can! Suffice it to say, all of my palms, including the large trachy in the pot wrapped in plactic and xmas lights, are buried. The in ground palms were buried as of last saturday, and now they are under 3 feet. My smaller trachy unfortunately had spear pull, although that may be more attributed to the fact I left the xmas lights on it one day when we hit 49, and the palm cooked to well over 100F im sure. It somewhat dessicated after that, and has not looked good since. I think these storms just pushed it over the edge. Well see if I cant get it to come back. Ok Im going to bed. I haul water for cooking and drinking routinely - old uncle was a beef farmer and his barnyard was too close to the well feeding the house. About five years ago, after his wife died and I stayed with him for a couple of months till his cattle went on pasture, I drank the water with him. He'd had three hip replacements and had quite a lot of pain in back, hip and leg so we didn't want to hear of him becoming stranded in a snowbank while doing chores (lacking kids, why he needed to keep cattle in his mid-80s is beyond me: we used to kid him, saying that we figured that he was trying to figure a way to take his assets with him). But when he died about 3 years ago, his relatives suggested that it would be adviseable not to drink the water (it smells, especialy when hot) and in the tests prior to sale of the farm the house well failed the e-coli test badly, also the coliform test. The well serving the barn passed e-coli, but failed coliform. I drank that water sometimes last summer when watering the garden, without dire result, and my landlord said that he did, same result. The trouble with hooking most water wells' pumps to a generator is that few of them have a feed line that can be separated easily, e.g. a push-and-twist plug in the line. As most furnaces lack - which makes it quite difficult to hook them up, as well, as I indicated earlier. The landlord came early this morning to plough out the lane ... but I wasn't planning to go anywhere. Arranging for a partner driver, and usually needing to drive "naked" to his/her place, even if the roads are mainly rather quiet rural ones, tends to make one avoid it for routine stuff. I hope that you had an interesting weekend. Maybe I'll turn my chair 180 degrees to the desk and get some stuff cleared off of it, in the coming days. ole joyful

Well crap! Just got back from the CPA and he recommends we put the max into an IRA every year until we retire. Dh agrees with him, so while we are still going to add on that room, it is back to being a tight budget. Gee, just when I was really thinking up neat stuff to want! LL, I love that kitchen picture; I think I have it saved somewhere too. I saw it before we left to go to the CPA and was trying to think how to do something similar. The problem is, I'd rather have upper cabinets than lower ones (except the deep drawers). So for now, I need to decide what windows to put in that room, and what kind of ceiling. We had thought about putting a ceiling like this: Not the benches or anything else, just the ceiling. With all the windows, I thought the higher ceiling would help with the heat, and give the room a lot of interest. However, it will also be more expensive. Not that we would have to put the wood on now, it could be added later. But the shape would have to be done from the beginning. We have beams in the top of the vaulted ceiling in the living room and they would kind of adjoin, and we have talked about adding beams to the living room something like this: I also like this: And I think it would fit more with the rest of the house. I want the room to look like it has been here since the house was built. And I like this, in a way better than the rest. Only I would flip it so the flat beadboard part is in the kitchen, and the vaulted part in the dining room, separated by the beam: I also think this would be easier to build, and cheaper, than the cone-shaped vaulted ceiling. Which do you like?

How did a discussion about windows turn into a cultural disagreement and charged political discussion? Left, right or wrong, please save the personal attacks. That said...I have an old (circa 1840s Greek Revival home with 6 over 6 double hung windows. Unfortunately, I had to replace them because they were in just too bad of a shape to restore economically. The closest I found in an affordable stock size and style was Brasco Boston 6 over 6 ADL (authentic divided light) windows (sash replacement kit--sash and balances only, no frame). A local mill was able to make custom wooden storms to match an original storm I found in the barn when I purchased the house. The windows cost a little over $100 each, the storms about $85.00. With a little ingenuity, I was able to make the Brascos fit into the original openings (the size difference was only about a 1/2 inch or so). From the outside, the house looks the same as it did in the photos I found at the local hisrorical society. The only drawback is the balances, which are vinyl with a spring mechanism. I was able to hide those with some creative interior trim work that doesn't look out of place. The net result is my heating bill has dropped significantly and my home is a lot less drafty. In the back turn of the 20th century addition that I had to completely rebuild due to structural issues, I bought pricey (stock) Marvin low E with argon 6 over 6 SDL's (simulated divided light windows--(prices ranging from $500 for a single unit to $1,100 for a mulled unit). The muntons are about an 1/8th of an inch thicker than the Brascos which matched the originals, but not noticeable since they are consistent on that portion of the house. Net net...The Marvins look great, operate smoothly (thanks to the quality balances) and are tight and completely draft free, but expensive. The Brascos look very close to the originals and with the storms seem to be as efficient. If I were in the position of the original poster, I would probably get removable interior storms and only put them in during the coldest months. The good ones don't look too bad and are a lot less expensive than replacing the windows. And my guess is the energy savings would pay back the cost within a few years or so. Perhaps Oberon can do the cost recovery calculation for you.

It's also close to the full moon, which means higher tides. Which means that the storm surge goes even higher. Wherever it hits, the people on the coastline are going to be in trouble.

Do you know? The storm is even making the news over in England.

I no longer can give a rats butt about Halloween. I am honestly in full panic mode since we just went through hurricane Irene last year. We are hoping for the best, but it's not looking good for us at all.

I'm in Northern Virginia -- will probably get a lot more rain than was previously expected. But I did fill up my gas tank today (only because it was slightly less than a quarter full) and hit the grocery store (because I usually go on Mondays). I didn't buy any frozen items, tho -- just in case the power does go out! Thankfully it's not summertime, when we had our last power outage ...

The last big hurricane-related storm was on MLK Day two years ago now, I think? That's when the MLK Memorial on the Mall in D.C. was supposed to be dedicated, and the storm led to a postponement of that.

Hoping all of you in the Northeast just get rain (and not enough for flooding).

Regarding snow, here's what I just read on NBC.com:

High winds: Those will blow through an area "several hundred miles across," said Franklin, adding that New York City could see tropical storm force winds. Karins expected "40-60 mph sustained winds over the region for 24-48 hours. Gusts along the coast could reach 80 mph, while inland gusts likely peak in the 60-70 mph range."

Heavy snow: Parts of West Virginia and the Appalachian corridor are likely to see more than a foot and possibly up two two feet, Louis Uccellini, director of the National Centers for Environmental Protection, told reporters.

Rainfall: 5-10 inches are expected from the Outer Banks up into New York City, Karins said. "River levels are currently running low which helps, he added. "Flash flooding of small creeks and streams is certain due to high rainfall rates but major rivers have a better chance of staying within their banks."

I worry about flooding. Even though I'm on high ground, our dirt basement wicks the water right in. And my son's ham radio towers.....he engineered them so well that they've survived two wind storms that took down the commercial radio station's tower, but still.....

I hope no one in my family drives to work Monday or Tuesday. Trees will probably be down all over the place.

Alisande, I bet all employers will understand if people stay home the first of the week.

It's not looking good at all. I hurt my back last week so I've been watching a lot of TV, lol, and now they're all calling it "Frankenstorm."

Let's pray that they're wrong. I'll never forget the time our local weathermen called for a huge a$$ blizzard here, (snow is harder to predict than rain), and everyone stocked up so much the grocery stores were almost empty. We didn't get one snowflake! Everyone was upset because they were expecting to stay home and play. lol

MY oldest DS is in Wilmington, NC and just called to say the storm will hit there tomorrow(Sat)causing severe winds and the possibility of rain until next Tuesday. He has several big Oaks and Pines in his area and is more worried about the trees than anything else, since falling limbs could cause a loss of power. We're praying it's nothing too severe. ;o)

Aaarrgh. The Delaware, NJ and PA area is supposed to take the brunt of this, at least that is the latest forecast. I will bring in anything that could blow away tomorrow. Monday and Tuesday will be the worst of it.

Dedtired - I just saw that on the news tonight. I am currently in Philadelphia on business and am staying through Saturday afternoon to be a tourist - so glad to be flying home late Saturday so I can miss out on the storm! Good luck!

We are in Central Florida and it has been blustery all day, cloudy this afternoon but no rain. A friend in South Florida lost power this morning for a while and they had rain and wind yesterday.

I hope all in Sandy's way take heed, whether its rain, snow, wind or all 3.

No snow expected for our area....far too warm. But I suspect it won't be as bad. Irene and the Halloween storms came after years of no storms which meant no "natural" pruning of all the trees in our area. I suspect the past storms have done a good job of weeding out the weakest branches. I also hope the utility companies have done a better job of preparing for storms and restoring power in a timely fashion.

Sandy still heading for NJ. Problem is that once it arrives, it's going to swirl around and hang out for a couple of days...winds should die down, but the rain will continue. It will make clean up efforts much harder. It's also very unusual as all of the hurricanes I remember have brought absolutely gorgeous clear blue skies and warm temps in their wake....

I hope things aren't as awful as the predictions. Sometimes the media like to hype weather unmercifully.

Here in Miami the weather is BEAUTIFUL. As often happens in late season storms, the aftermath of the storm's passing brought spectacular conditions: we woke up this morning to brilliant blue sky, sunshine, low humidity and cooler temps. Ah, fall in Miami-nothing finer except of course winter in Miami :).

Again, hoping the weather gods are kind to everyone who is worrying and waiting. Jim Cantore, calm down and quit freaking everyone out!

I still haven't done any storm prep, so that is on the agenda for today. First, I have to have my hair cut and colored. Gotta do the important things first!

Loving Philadelphia, ded, thanks! I lived near Penn's Landing and worked for the National Park Service 25 years ago in college, just for a semester internship program, and this is my first time back. I've been walking around, trying to remember things - so much has changed, and of course, 25 years takes a toll on the memory. The weather is great for this time of year - for now, anyway!

We are in the Carolinas, but inland. It is a little breezy today but it is warm enough to have the windows open. Supposedly we are too far inland for the storm to affect us.

My step-mother in law went on a cruise with her 5 traveling lady friends. They were suppose to go to several ports, but ended up docked at Key West most of the time. Went into the St John's River to spend the night (customs opened at 8am) and had 20 foot swales. She said she was terrified.

You would think they would have know in advance, but it was a 7 day cruise, so maybe not. ??

That man drives me batty! I don't know about the rest of you all, but you can't pay me to watch TWC. They get our weather wrong all the time, especially during tornado season.

I finally had to tell my friends who live out of state to stop watching TWC then contacting me to see if we're okay, when NO storms are even in the state! lol.

Just heard my school district is closed on Monday AND Tuesday. Time to get in my jammies now that we have stored as much as possible In the garage. Wind is picking up, but no rain yet.

Flood zones in my town are under mandatory evacuations. NYC will suspend public transit after 7PM. Scared for my brother who has to work in this, he is a sanitation worker and he has to report for work, not sure why. We stored everything we could in our garage too and were able to get a generator. Just praying there are no tornadoes in this storm b/c if our basements are flooded, where will we take cover? Saying prayers, that's all we could do at this point.

Polly, our collection day is Tuesday and I sure hope our city cancels it. I hate thinking of the guys out working during the storm. We plan to keep our trash cans in the garage for next week, so at least they won't have to stop here if they are required to work. Maybe things will change for your brother. Hope so. It is just common sense, but maybe that is the problem!

I worry about them, too--including the wild animals who have little shelter. Part of my pre-storm preparations included scooping lots of deer poop from the yard, as we have many regular visitors. I hope the birds will be okay too. When the storm is over I'll put the feeders up again.

The power company just called to say we could have an outage lasting more than a week.

I am SOOOO glad we didn't book our Halloween trip to Asheville again this year!!! This explanation is worth sitting through for the 9 minutes - it explained so much to me that gets glossed over in other coverage. His focus is NC but explains a lot about how these intersecting storms will impact the entire east coast. Stay safe everyone.

Stay safe everyone!

I was in NH for a condo association meeting. Our property managers cleaned out the bank accounts for most of the condos in our little town. A big mess. We are better off than some other associations. But everyone is up in arms. I was supposed to have another meeting Tuesday, but canceled it to come home to the Cape with DH and DS. Our hatches are battened and we have food and water. (and five extra teenagers). I'm really, really hoping we don't lose power. We have a generator that will power the fridge, and maybe a TV. But of course DH didn't get it pulled out and ready to go. He didn't believe the storm was going to be an issue. sigh....

I'll be thinking of those of you in the direct path. Please be safe!

DLM, they have already issued winter storm warnings for the NC mountains. We may see flurries here on Tuesday, but no accumulation supposedly. No school would be good, though.

This a preview of what's to come our way later today. Despite having been evacuated twice last summer, I am in somewhat of a state of WTH? Really, again? Ugh

From Miami--hoping for the best for everyone. I know that winds of 70-80 mph are *scary*, and I live where the buildings are built to withstand that and more. And the water...really feeling terrible for all on the coast and those who will be affected.

It is such a terrible feeling to be waiting for a storm; you don't know exactly what will come, how bad, how dangerous. My heart and prayers to all of you that you are safe, that you don't lose anyone and that your homes stay undamaged.

I think we are all in for a tough time and the long-term repercussions on the environment, the Chesapeake Bay particularly, are huge.

I should add that the water is about 4 feet higher now but too bad outside to take pictures. My house is now surrounded by water and I am hoping we are high enough not to flood inside. It's so bad that if I decided to evacuate I would have to wear a life jacket to wade down the street. My son would drive as close as he can in his truck to pick us up.

Everyone stay safe!

Here are some tips. Sorry to run in so quick but I still have a few things to do.

I think I've thought of everything. Gallon milk jugs in freezer for ice; have 4 thermos's filled with hot boiled water. Found a thermal coffee carafe that I'll pour boiling water in then brew a pot of coffee.

If you drink bottled water; refill the bottles & put in freezer in case you run short; can be used for drinking or ice. Any container I have that will hold water has been filled just in case. Some have come out of the tap while others were filled with the filtered water from the fridge.

Fill bathtubs with water, just in case. It will give you a supply of fresh, potable water. During a hurricane, there is a tremendous amount of flooding, and power outages, and loss of other utility services- including water. Any water that would come out of your tap would likely be contaminated.

if we lose power; remember that sump pumps will NOT work. Hopefully some have generators or inverters that will run it. Keep an eye on your basement.

Walgreens is open in case someone needs last minute OTC meds. Wawa is supposedly staying open as long as possible too

Make sure your basement drains are clear as well as any sewers in front of your house. If you had water in your basement from the last one; consider digging a trench to allow the water to go away from where it leaked & around the house

Unfortunately, rain isn't a friend of homeowners who live in close proximity to beautiful streams, etc. When there aren't storms, it is a beautiful setting, but when we get heavy rain, it's been a huge problem. Over-building in a formerly farmland-type area has left little in the way of "buffers" that has protected us from this kind of flooding (have been here 25 yrs.), and it has only been in the last couple of years that we've encountered this level of flooding when a nor'easter blows through.

I get that everyone wants to live in a rural area, but once the developers buy loads of acreage on which to build custom McMansions with substantial sized lots, along with many nice sized housing "developments", the former attraction is really lost.

Watching the weather closely, I know we are in for alot of rain here in the Mid-Atlantic. While we thought Irene was awful, this storm is alot different, and will inflict much more flooding.

joshuasamah, ugh, that picture makes me ill. I have a very good friend who lives on SI. She a child with serious healthcare needs which require being able to access medical equipment in her home. Going to a shelter would be a nightmare for her family. Don't get me wrong, the fact that there are shelters for the displaced are a lifesaver, but when you have to deal with having a child with a need for medical equipment, it is really tough.

We've moved everything possible to our 2nd floor. Irene flooded us badly, but it didn't flood our first floor. Realistically, we are unlikely to escape that luxury with Sandy.

Oh, and to make things a bit more complicated, my closest neighbor has decided it's been fun to watch 3 beavers build a dam and lodge on her property. What she and her DH don't realize, is that her entertainment has the propensity to put us in a bigger quandry than we are already. Another story for a different thread, lol.

We are a few miles from Boston (inland) and the winds are really picking up -- have been for about the past hour. Lights have flickered but so far we still have power. Our next-door neighbor's large tree has come down...fortunately not hitting anything! It could be a long night. Now they're also saying a slight chance of a tornado overnight. Great!

Nancybee and Workinprogress, So far we are okay. 99.9% of the time I absolutely love where we live-on the Great South Bay in front and a canal in the back yard. But right now? I wish I lived on a mountain! So sorry to hear about your friend's child Work, that is a real emergency. I hope she is safe and able to find safe harbor if needed. We haven't evacuated because even though intellectually I know I am dumb to stay, emotionally I just can't leave my home. We do have a second floor we can stay on if needed. I hope everyone stays safe.

A few other tips for prep:

Cash. You should have plenty on hand; when the power is down ATM machines don't work, and you also want to be able to buy something instantly if the need and the opportunity arises

Your contact point--you should identify someone *outside the weather affected area*. If you don't have power you might need to carefully watch those cell phone batteries. So you won't want to be making or taking a lot of calls. Best to have one person to whom you can provide updates, let know you are safe, or that you need something etc

Your documents-if you haven't already done it while you have power print copies of your homeowner's and medical insurance papers. In case you need either, it will be a lot easier if you have the account numbers and coverage details in hand

Gasoline-make sure you're gassed up. Same issue with gas pumps as with ATM machines.

Power is now out...has been since 3:15pm. The # of outages is growing and the weather is getting worse...it will be days before we get our power back. Windy and raining and barometer is still dropping. But we're having a good time. I'm working on the afghan I'm making for a July bride and we're watching reruns of Gunsmoke and Rawhide...not a bad way to spend a storm. (Helped by the cheese and crackers in one hand and the glass of wine in the other.) Woodstove is cranking and Jenny the generator is doing her job.
I hope everyone else is staying out of harms way...plenty of time to fret and worry once the storm is over...

Power is now out...has been since 3:15pm. The # of outages is growing and the weather is getting worse...it will be days before we get our power back. Windy and raining and barometer is still dropping. But we're having a good time. I'm working on the afghan I'm making for a July bride and we're watching reruns of Gunsmoke and Rawhide...not a bad way to spend a storm. (Helped by the cheese and crackers in one hand and the glass of wine in the other.) Woodstove is cranking and Jenny the generator is doing her job.
I hope everyone else is staying out of harm's way...plenty of time to fret and worry once the storm is over...
