Please help my DD with her school project

My DD is a senior at Oregon State, majoring in Psychology with an emphasis in womens studies. She needs a favor:

ATTN: My female friends, please read me! I am doing a research study for my Psychology Advanced Social Research class and I need your help. I have created a 52 question survey online and it only takes about 10-15 of your time. The questions are related to body image and your answers are completely anonymous. I am the only one that will see the results, and they will not be tied to any identifying information about you. Men can do this survey, but I'm mainly interested in female responses. You would be doing me an amazing favor and supporting the academic research of a woman!

Glad to help. Done. Would she be willing to share an abstract of her results once she has completed the study? I think it would be interested to hear the end results and conclusions.

Trish, so you had a rootball that you stuck in water, right? I won't have that, but I don't think it will matter since the roots will still be in water. Cutting the tops that short makes sense. I haven't planted any bare root roses, but I've been planting daylilies where you make a cone of soil and lay the roots around the cone. Does that sound like a good plan? Don't know for sure if she has a bed ready to receive the rose. But at least if I do it this way, she can pot her up properly when she gets her home. I guess the roses that were moved to your house included Teas? Did you cut them back immediately before digging them up? Did you root prune some time before the actual move? Thanks!! Sherry

About 10 years ago Eddie Bauer did this, they gave you a card with the information about the tree which was being planted. They had hooked up with the National Forests, to replant native trees in the forest. The card gave you a choice of which forest you wanted your tree to be planted in. The problem with what you want to do is that Cities often have regulations on tree plantings, and you would have to secure permission from a State Agriculture Department for sending trees out in the mail to different states. Usually projects like this get agreements from local Nurseries and the nurseries can provide tree shoots, young trees ready to be planted. The other thing is that the death rate for trees is about 1/3rd....you might get people unhappy in the long run with the fact the tree has died and might want a new one. LOL Pam!! I totally missed that-must be slipping!! Its a tweety poster so I guess this ends the debate of is tweeety a boy or girl!! The pics of the room are now on the MLS listing-Ed thinks the room is perfect-his words LOL!! BTW...Amy had some friends over last night and they were mulling over doing her new room in the same way. I said I would ask here since you all have way more experience than I do....She wants to use the same green but I am worried doing this color on an entire wall may be too much saturation. Especially since this is such a trendy color which will grow tiresome over time. I'd really like her to express herself in her own way but I can still nudge her in the right direction. Cheers! Susie

From your post, it sounds like you have a real problem on your hands. I assume you have already considered and had him tested for drug and alcohol use--while I hope not, it could be a factor here (and sadly, if he's as depressed as he sounds, if it isn't yet, substance abuse could be right around the corner for him). He definitely needs some interests. Sports would be good if he's inclined. Music or dance, if his interests lean that direction. How about something like learning how to animate cartoons--DD loved doing that some years back. Volunteering is a great idea--about half the 'candy-stripers' at the hospital when my daughter was in high school and voluteered were guys (they weren't called candy stripers and had MUCH better uniforms to wear than the poor girls did). How about getting him involved in raising seeing eye puppies--check with your county 4-H on that one, they usually run those programs. Or perhaps some Saturday classes at the local college--many offer programs for high school students. A parttime job might even be a good idea if he can find one at his age--something like working in an ice cream parlor, perhaps--for a teenager, money is tangible evidence of his worth. I think at this point, it would be a good idea to look for some interests outside of school for him--once he starts to feel better about himself, he may find he can deal better with the pressures at school. I wouldn't give up on the couselling--do your research first. Interview several counsellors and find one who seems to understand your problem and who can come up with a plan. Maybe if you persevere, after a few sessions, he'll feel comfortable enough to open up. Let's face it--it's pretty hard for most of us adults to tell our problems to an outsider on the first or second meeting, so give him a little time. I'm sure you've also been frequent visitors to his guidance counselor, teachers, etc. Have you considered changing schools? Perhaps a vocational high school, where he can learn practical talents might be both more interesting and more useful to him. You're certainly right to be concerned--you want him to live up to his potential, not throw away his teen age years, then wake up in his 20's finding he has no preparation for a job, life.... Thanks! I think she's planning on releasing a synopsis of her findings. She's had a lot of requests to do so. This is one of her passions.

She's been on both sides of the body image spectrum, and it's caused her a lot of dismay. She was a GORGEOUS baby and little girl, then puberty set in and she gained weight and was very self conscious, as well as having braces! Late teens she slimmed down, got the braces off, had long blond hair and was a sterotypical hot blonde, getting LOTS of attention.

She developed late onset acne, and gained back a lot of weight in college. She dyed her hair dark and went into a depressional funk. Then she lost weight again, went back to blonde and was more miserable than before! Now she's up in weight again (this is her genetic curse) but not 'fat'...just not model slim as she'd been. So she's seen how people treat her when she's up in weight, or thin with blonde hair.

She's also experienced my struggle with lymphedema...which took me from normal weight, athletic and, well, attractive and attention getting, to heavy, disfigured and no longer 'hot'. That has really bugged her and so now, she's determined to fight the stereotypes and social pressures women are put under to look a certain way.

Done. Great idea for a project, it will be very interesting. My BS is in Social Work/Sociology, Masters in SW-- I always dreaded the research courses :)

I would love to see the results, too! I work for a non-profit whose focus is empowering middle school girls, and body image is a huge issue.

Done. I just want to mention, though, that there are several questions that end or start with "when I am slim" -- that presupposes one is, or has been at some point, slim. I never have been slim, so I have no actual experience with what it must like to be so.

But, somewhat along the lines Jakabedy noted, there were some questions that seemed (to me) to presuppose not-thinness so it was hard to know what to base my answers on. I am thin (BMI 18), and also a bit older (60) so I hope that doesn't mess up her responses. However, I suppose if the same survey is seen (from different experiences) to be asking from the "wrong", e.g. opposite point of view, then probably it is stroke of survey-writing genius.

What's interesting (sad, really) is that whether one is thin, or not, weight is such a potent issue for girls and women. I have often wondered if part of the much-ballyhooed (and real) overweight problem we have in the US is driven by the over-arching focus on weight as a body-image/attractiveness thing, rather than mostly a calorie, activity, genetic heritage issue.

I, too, would be interested in seeing the reults when they are published.

Thanks everyone! She's gotten over 115 responses, far more than she thought she'd get.

She's in the middle of compiling the data and will share the results soon.
