I am not clear as to whether your MW is an Over the Range (OTR), style that you will use as your hood fan, or if it is a counter MW that you are installing over your oven, as you used the term oven once, and stove once, so I'm going to assume that you have an 'all in one' range, not just an oven or not just a cooktop.

I kinda made the same mistake too when ordering my cabinets, but you'd think my KD would have caught it, as I had never had an OTR MW before. I ordered a shelf instead of a cabinet, as I thought that would be a good display area instead of an awkward to reach cabinet.

Anyhow, I didn't realize that you NEED the cabinet to attach the support brackets for the MW to, AND you need something to hide the venting for the hood part. DUH!

So, my brilliant DH ended up designing a cabinet display shelf for my MW and my kitchen guy built the cabinet using the box that was ordered but didn't fit over our fridge. He turned the pieces inside out, so that the 'finished' side matched the other cabinets. My cabinets are stained maple on the outside and varnished maple on the inside. I wanted the 'inside' of this cabinet to be stained. We then used a piece of the plywood veneer panel for finishing off the peninsula as the 'back' piece which hides the venting. So I have a shallow display shelf in the cabinet box. This picture shows the MW hood venting on the top- that will be hidden by crown molding. For some reason the cabinet looks like a different colour in the picture, must be the flash picking up something, cuz they all look the same colour in real life. :>)

Good point raehelen and the thing is, I'm not sure which direction we're taking with the microwave. I had previously (waaaaay previously, can't take it back) purchased an OTR microwave thinking yippee I finally will have something that I can use as a poor excuse for a hood. But not actually thinking about the venting dilemma--that's what DH is for!

The previous double oven range had a vent that just went into the wall (as did the two bathroom vents for that matter). There is a bathroom on the other side of the range wall. Going up would be very difficult. The kitchen is an extension of this very old house and the former flat roof is still there (roofed with asphalt)(and has a pitch roof over it now with no access). My husband really really does not want to get into cutting into this for venting.

Sooooo, now I have to investigate those charcoal filter microwaves. It's when we opened the microwave up and started talking about the bracketing that I realized the obvious about the cabinet.

I think you've done a wonderful job adapting; your husband is clever. It gives me ideas as we already have to finish the back of the island to match the cabinets as I opted to not purchase that from the cabinet manufacturer.
