(I've been on vacation) What was your best Christmas gift?

For me, two, sort of.

(1) my oldest daughter & my son in law will be having a baby in 2010. She took and passed 5 - 6 home pregnancy tests but her doctor's appointment isn't until 1/13. My first grandchild. Needless to say, DW is over the moon. Already I've heard "We have to plan a shower!!!!!". Just a bit early for that, I'd say. BTW I've been giving our 25+ year old baby crib a free home in the crawlspace ever since DD #3 got out of it (she's a HS math teacher now). It's hermetically sealed in plastic but even if it's clean & pristeen when I drag it out of there, I'd bet my paycheck the wife says "Let's get a new one.".

(2) the more tangible one at present, a gizmo you hook up between a VCR and a PC for the purpose of making DVD's out of the old tapes. My computer is a new Windows 7 model so I had to wait until a compatible model of the interface became avalable. I worked on the project all last week, and for anyone thinking about it, let me tell you - it's a lengthy, tedious process. It's fun seeing the tapes again - my wedding, the kid's school plays, Christmas mornings, our trip to a taping of the local Bozo show, where DD #2 got to be Bozo's assistant & was interviewed on camera; vacations, bumper-bowling, etc,etc, etc, but going through them and cutting out the unnessary parts takes a lot of time. I'm at about 4 hours of finished product but the surface has barely been scratched.

So, that's how I'll be spending my time in the forseeable future. What have you got?

Gift #1 is the best of course. Heartfelt congratulations.
Let the shopping begin!! LOL!

Softball, DW will probably say, "Let's get a new one." Safety laws change with time, and you really don't know if the old crib measures up or not. IMHO, it's probably fine. The thing that recently surprised me is that they are not recommending bumper pads around the crib any more. Gee, it's a wonder my kids survived.

The gizmo sounds fabulous. It really is time-consuming, but stick with it because it will be a gift to your family.

We exchanged very few gifts this year--not much worth mentioning. Seems like we all have what we need.

Sounds like you got the best gift of all!

My favorite gift this year was from a gal I have never even met. I frequent another message board about cross stitch. This wonderful lady sent me a beautiful sewing kit. My kids of course bought me patterns and such. I have trained them well!

I think your new toy sounds wonderful! I would love to get one of those and the one that lets you record your old albums onto cd. I have a few that have never been done on cd!

June - those are definitely double petunias. I also have the MW geraniums, though. I've put a link below and the pics of 'doubles' are at the end of that page. Jeanne she is a God-send. I don't get to go there much because she's about 40 minutes away and the price of gasoline has not dropped here yet, it's still about $5.40 a gallon (was around $6) so we don't drive around too much. Well, my answer sounds very shallow after squirrel's response. About five years ago, after I had already given DH my "list" and I knew he had probably already done his shopping, I came across a sapphire (my birthstone) and diamond ring in a store that I just looooved. I was with a friend who was shopping for something and I wasn't hunting for a ring, but had always wanted one. Well, I tried the ring on, drooled over it, and the salesperson was ever-so-helpful and wrote the info about the ring on a business card and said, "Give this to your husband -- you never know!" I held onto the card for a few days thinking, no, this would be too greedy... well, finally I gave DH the card and told him I was in love with this ring but I knew he'd probably already shopped, maybe it could be a gift for a future holiday, etc. Also, the ring cost more than what we usually would spend on Christmas gifts so I didn't expect it. But on Christmas morning, the ring was at the very bottom of my stocking! It was extra special because after many years together, DH isn't the type of guy who surprises me, but that was a fabulous surprise! I still wear the ring almost every day.

Glad to know others are up at the crack of dawn. No wonder you get so much done, Slow. The tray is a $2 thing from an antigue mall. The sunflowers come from a vase I picked up at a yardsale for .50. When my oldest son's girlfriend was here she admired the vase and seemed appalled when I told her my plan was to bust it up. I am thinking of giving her the tray for Christmas. Still have some flowers left that I want to use on a box. I wanted to experiment with the glitter in the grout. The glitter looks like pieces of sea salt. It's supposed to be antique white grout-looks very blah on these pieces to me. Don't think it added much. The pumpkins were another experiment with thinset and styrofoam. By the last tree I just quit thinsetting altogether-styrofoam only. Hope to get the white glitter grout and do the trees today. That star got raves and I sold it for a ridiculous amount of money (to me anyway)for what I put in it. I have another I want to do in red/white/blue. The pitcher I did in red with gray grout also sold for more than I ever thought it should. I didn't argue about price, just smiled and took the money. I am quite proud of the flamingo. Still not sure if it's a christmas gift or not...maybe I'll just keep it!

Congrats Grandpa. The spoiling is about to begin. Seriously- that is good news. Your wife must be ecstatic and of course your daughter and SIL. I like your gizmo, but it sounds a little too complicated for me.

Have you just been on vacation from the KT or did you actually forsake the frozen wilds of Philly for a warmer climate?

My favorite gift is being delivered on Thursday.....a hot tub.
DH has had the sun room remodeled for it, and it's now ready.

mcmann: I stayed home and shoveled; thanks for asking. BTW it was only when my younger sister became a grandmother that I found out that the grandparent gets to pick what name he or she is called by the grandchild. My sister took Mom-Mom, which is what my Mom was to her grandkids before she passed away in '02. I have decided on Gramps. I took it from the old Lassie show before Timmy (Jon Provost) got there. The grandfather played by George Chandler was Gramps to Jeff - Timmy's predecessor. Always liked him.

Congrats!! A new baby for next Christmas!

Nothing worth mentioning here... although I might want to send you all my old vhs tapes to put on dvd since you'll be an old pro at it in no time. lol

Congrats! We have a new one baby coming in 2010 also! It is still very early for our DD...but they couldn't keep it a secret! LOL

We are Nana & Papa! When the girls got bunnies years ago, they said we were grandpa and grandma....nope, don't like that so we went with Nana & Papa! Only prob, the other grandmother is called Nana also...and long before the kids met. :/ Oh well, they will figure it out quick!

DH has a VHS to DVD gadget that he bought last winter. He has all of our old tapes now on DVD and we sent many to the neighborhood kids...that now have their own kids...from years ago when there were 15 kids in our neighborhood! Great fun, then and now!

We haven't had our family Christmas yet, until the 9th then we will have all the kids together....to me, that is the best gift of all!!

Keep the crib for yourselves and all the visits with various grandchildren and their parents so that they can relax at your house. You can treat your new prince or princess to a brand spanking new crib. Have you seen the prices of cribs these days????

You can buy a new mattress for the old crib if you like and spiff it up for all those visits.

We saved a hand made cradle for our kids to use. Our first grandson was born far away in a very crowded 2 bedroom condo. He shared his nursery with his father's office. So there was no need or room for the cradle.

But they moved close to us for their 2nd child, and had a 2 story house. A cradle downstair is perfect for our 2 1/2 month old grandson. DD has enough storage room to save the cradle easily for her brother's use some day.
