what I've done over my Christmas vacation

I am really enjoying being crafty again!! I've been mosaicing pots like crazy!! I can't get enough of it.

The day after Christmas, DH & I went to his nephew's house and on the way stopped at this lady's house where she sells plants; we've been there a few times before. They are the cheapest plants anywhere and I seriously have no idea if she make any money but I am grateful I found this place. Almost every thing is a dollar. I got 14 plants and paid only $12. Even the succulents were $1 and a couple were pretty big. And I love the double petunias. The pink one has the most beautiful fragrance - you can smell it as you pass by the pot.

Today was flea market day and the pickins were slim but I did manage to find this candle holder - perfect for Our Lady Garden! Only cost 5 bucks.

And since so many of you are in the depths of winter I thought I'd share this pic of the flowers now blooming at the right-hand entrance of Our Lady Gardyn. The plant under the buddleja is Salvia sclarea turk-something. HAHAHA can't remember the full name

I'm just drooling over the beautiful lushness of your scenery. Oh and your pots are great. How lucky you are to have someone in the private sector to get your plants. I love the succulants. I think I would like to try some this year.

Great pics Cait! I love how you left the rim of the pots natural, that's a nice effect! You are a very talented mosaic-er!

Your garden is so lush and beautiful. Love that brick pathway, it beckons you to stroll on around the curve! I love geraniums and can almost smell the first picture!

And the little man in the sombrero ... he's the BOMB!!! I just love little accents like that! ~tenderlee

Note - punctuation may be weird cuz this was copied and pasted from a Word doc. Hi Mike. Welcome to the forum and to orchids. A quick note - a lot of people start in orchids like Steph/Dragon Kite describes - seeing what will grow for you. Different orchids need way different growing conditions, as ifraser mentioned. Another approach is to figure out the environment you can provide for an orchid and look for orchids that will most likely thrive in it. Basic environment elements are light, temperature ranges, watering methods, and air circulation. Most people's homes are suitable for Phals. The nickname of your 1st orchid is Phal, pronounced FAIL, just as the label says. One book that's helped boatloads of new orchid folks is "Ortho's All About Orchids." Check Amazon for the paperback. A couple of weeks ago, it was $2.70 + shipping. Another good resource is the AOS (American Orchid Society) site. One section is "Now That I Have This Plant, What Do I Do With It?" On that page is a link to ORCHIDS 101, the AOS "quick start guide to orchid culture." You can sign up for their free beginner's newsletter. These aren't the only good resources, but tons of orchid books and online resources have info that's just plain wrong, and as you said, it can be overwhelming. Some of the bad info's harmless, but some of it could compromise the health of your orchid. On this forum, opinions on culture differ, even among experienced growers. That's part of the challenge - finding out what works for your orchids. A couple of other basics: 1. Your orchid may have come in a plastic pot inside a decorative outside pot. Or the plastic pot may have festive paper around it. Be sure that inner orchid pot has drainage holes in the bottom, so water can drain. Also, make sure your orchid pot never sits in water. That means, if you keep any outside pot or paper for the pot, the orchid must drain completely before you put it back in the decorative whatever. 2. If your water is softened, you'll need another source of water for your orchid. The salts will kill the orchid. 3. Most orchid deaths are caused by over watering. You may know that, in the wild, Phals usually grow on the trunk or branch of a tree with their roots bare. The roots get water and nutrients when it rains, and breezes keep them from staying wet too long, keep bugs away, etc. Our challenge is to create an environment close enough to the wild that the orchid will thrive. Pots and potting media - usually bark or moss - are for our convenience. At first, all the info may seem yes - overwhelming - it sure has for thousands of people who became successful hobbyists. In the near future, terms will begin sounding familiar (they may already). You're launched! :) Let us know when more questions come up. Congrats! We have a new one baby coming in 2010 also! It is still very early for our DD...but they couldn't keep it a secret! LOL We are Nana & Papa! When the girls got bunnies years ago, they said we were grandpa and grandma....nope, don't like that so we went with Nana & Papa! Only prob, the other grandmother is called Nana also...and long before the kids met. :/ Oh well, they will figure it out quick! DH has a VHS to DVD gadget that he bought last winter. He has all of our old tapes now on DVD and we sent many to the neighborhood kids...that now have their own kids...from years ago when there were 15 kids in our neighborhood! Great fun, then and now! We haven't had our family Christmas yet, until the 9th then we will have all the kids together....to me, that is the best gift of all!!

As you have discovered, there are a number of different "solutions" presented here. Pothos are very durable and so lend themselves to a number of different growing conditions. :-) Long and short of it is that, yes, the plant should be salvageable. Remove the black, stringy roots on the right half of the root mass in your first photo -- they're dead. The ones on the left side look viable. You have a number of options as mentioned above as well as that of combining options. After removal of the dead material, I'd give the root mass a good soak for an hour or so. You then can do any number of things. Such as: 1. Pot the plant up in lightly moist soil. Personally, I would enclose the vines in a clear plastic bag for a few days. This will reduce water loss through the leaves while the roots work to uptake water to rehydrate the plant. or 2. Put the entire plant mass in a large clear bag with some damp sphagnum moss wrapping around the roots for a couple days, then repeat the root soak. You could the repeat the bagging and soaking process a few times or go to method 1. or 3. Hedge you bets by cutting the vines back by about 1/3 - 1/2. Root the cuttings in water and use method 1 or 2 for the remaining rooted portion. Which ever method(s) you use, keep the plant in a warm area out of direct sun until it recovers. It may take the plant up to a week for the leaves to perk up.

Wow the garden is just beautiful!! I love succulents and they grow well here. Your mosaic pots are awesome(-: I also love the man with the sombrero. That is really cute!! I love adding pieces to my pots too. The rabbits look great too. I always try to find something to poke into a pot just to add an extra thing to look at while enjoying the plants themselves(-:

Oh Cait!!! Thanks for the ray of sunshine!!! Your garden is lovely!! And your pots are GREAT!!! Luv the bunnies!!!lol! Where I live, we NEVER get the kind of snow we are getting, well, 40yrs ago when I was a kid we had snow like this, so I've been Lovin' it...till yesterday...when I got my first issue of Gardens West magazine....and now, seeing your flowers...it succs to be me!!! LOL!

Cindee - it's sweltering out right now so I'm inside trying to keep cool!

Jane - we NEVER have that here. We don't get snow like that, just lotsa frost. Well, I did hear of a light dusting happening once. And why is your DH surrounded by so many Snow Ghosts? I think it's kinda creapy that there are so many phantoms hanging around your place LOL

Kirk - Mosaicing is the perfect indoor craft!! Can't WAIT to see what you come up with. I'm sure there will be bears in there somewhere!! And Trygg says HI!! He's having a ball though sometimes he gets into trouble, especially when I let him loose in the garden.

All along the stem the most amazing, tiny, yellow flowers are bursting into bloom! It's just too adorable!

And this is a pic of a native flower. They call it Paper Daisy because the petals feel like paper and even make a papery noise when you flick them. Usually the flowers are smaller but this cultivar has huge flowers comparatively.

Cait, they are beautiful. Lucky finds. the pink flower and the burgandy one next to it are Martha Washington Gernamiums I believe. My mil gave my DH a few of them and the purple one we have is doing beautifully.

June - those are definitely double petunias. I also have the MW geraniums, though. I've put a link below and the pics of 'doubles' are at the end of that page.

Jeanne she is a God-send. I don't get to go there much because she's about 40 minutes away and the price of gasoline has not dropped here yet, it's still about $5.40 a gallon (was around $6) so we don't drive around too much.

Cait, you are an always an inspiration. Your garden is so full and beautiful. Love your new succulents and mosaiced pots. That paper daisy is awesome, I grew some strawflowers once that I liked they look similar. Thanks for the Seedman link. I have spent a couple hours browsing around there! What a variety! I think I might have to order some things :)
Thought of you tonight, when I looked outside and the moon was so bright and almost full, and that lovely post you wrote last year about being in your garden with the full moon light shining on things.

Luna...Where are you from? I live near Hell MI so to see a sign for Hell caught me by surprise. I love the ice hanging from the sign...I guess Hell froze over...lol.
