No Call List for cell phones

Just got an email from my sister-in-law, a forward actually, warning about cell phone numbers going public this month. Included is a "No Call List" number to call to ward off telemarketers. Has anyone received this email and is it legit?

I don't want to call the number and be PUT on a telemarketer's list.

Please tell me you don't believe every email you get. It's another hoax. Snopes has covered this for years. Your sister-in-law is a gullible fool and should be blocked from your email account. When something says "Forward this to everyone you know" DON'T. That's the first red flag. Second is something that comes by email. It would be headlining news if it were true.

Your caution and suspicion were absolutely correct. But again, sis-in-law should receive a lecture on it.

Is she one of these that sends out chain emails too?

I've received that "notice" several times, and I've never added my cell phone to the list. I've only received a couple of telemarket calls on it..and both callers probably quit their jobs to clean toilets! lol

I loved reading about the signs you're received, Lulie. I believe they were from your Dad. A friend of mine died in 2008 and as we were driving to my parent's for Thanksgiving dinner that year I noticed a trailer that belonged to my friend's employer parked in a storage lot and was thinking how weird that was (it hadn't been there the day before) and at that very moment I get a text message from a unfamiliar number. It just said "Hi!". I've had that phone for 5 years and have only got 1 other text message and that was from my daughter (yes, I am behind on the times. lol). Maybe it was just some kid goofing around or maybe it was my friend saying "Hi" from the otherside? The timing was perfect anyhow. Miss you at the KT Lulie!

I don't have a phone number, just go to the donotcall.gov and register your cell numbers. This is a true story -- look at this website, they are the people who started it: intelius.com They have your cell number if you use it for any business, etc.

This was in the Milwaukee Sentinel today: Madison - The state Senate today unanimously voted to add cell phones to the state's "do not call" list and raise the maximum fine for violating that law from $100 to $1,000. The bill's sponsor, Sen. Jon Erpenbach (D-Middleton), said it would be the first major expansion of the "do not call" list maintained by the state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection since it became law in January 2003. Last year, more than 1 million Wisconsin residential phone lines were covered by the list, Erpenbach added. Letting those with cell phones add them to the list and avoid telemarketers is a "popular public consumer service," and raising the maximum fine for each violation will deter telemarketers from ignoring the list, Erpenbach said. Erpenbach said he expects Republicans, who control the state Assembly, to also pass the measure before the Legislature's scheduled adjournment for the year in mid-March. Under state laws, telemarketers are charged fees that maintain the list.

I just registered my cell phone with DO NOT CALL REGISTRY--------------------------------------- FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers are barred from calling consumers on their cell phones without their consent. The federal government does not maintain a national cell phone registry. Personal cell phone users have always been able to add their numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry Â the same Registry consumers use to register their land lines Â either online at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free 1-888-382-1222 from the telephone number they wish to register. Registrations become effective within 31 days of signing up and are active for five years. There is no cut-off date or deadline for registrations.

I wish more people used Snopes.

Sometimes I reply to emails like that one and let the sender know that it's untrue. Other times I'm reluctant to make the sender feel bad for misinforming so many people. Depends on the age and sensitivity of the sender......

Oh yeah, my sister-in-law is one of those "forward" queens. Most of them I just delete without opening, and I've tried to point out that some of them are plain silly. I react more like alisande and for the same reasons. I had one elderly friend write back once, "No, no, it's true - my brother told me it was and he would never lie!"

My head just spins when I get sent one of those inane email forwards with an added note from the sender saying "I know you told me to stop sending you things like this BUT you just have to read this. This one is important............."

I have a dear cousin that likes to send me 15 forwarded emails at a time. I just delete what I don't want to read. No biggie to me. Sometimes she even sends me the one I sent to her.

If you want to add your cell phone number to the Do Not Call list, go right ahead. It's quick, easy, and free to do so.

HOWEVER, there is no need to do so, to avoid telemarketers.

You don't even need to go to the Snopes web site to determine that. Go to the web site for the Federal Communications Commission. They have a disclaimer on their site about the "warning."

AND, the FCC has recently proposed even tougher restrictions against what are known as "robocalls" - these restrictions would apply to calls to land lines, so you know they aren't going to allow these calls to cell phones.
