HELP! New member w/ Home Depot quandary
Comments (18)Hi - thanks for the info John and msgreatdeals. I went onto HD website and Lowe's site too, and I found the info about the $ off, 50% off finishes, and free kitchen base with order of 10+ cabinets. I sent these to my KD to see if they are honoring them. It turns out that the deals they are offering are store deals, not cabinet manufacturer deals. My KD contacted her KM rep, and was told that they will be offering the 50% off the finishes starting on 5/8. That is good news for me because I am selecting painted cabinets, so it's a savings of 7.5% on everything. KD also gave me some good information about how this all works - it seems I cannot price out apples to apples with her price vs. big box store because the BB stores contract for a lower per box price with the cabinet manufacturers, but their prices on molding, trim, toekick, brackets, specialty inserts, etc., are much higher. So, she gave me a price on one piece of molding so I could price it with a BB and see. Over $2k of my cost is in the moldings and accessories. She did not mention a price hike on 5/4 - I would assume her KM sales person would have said something about it - so again, this may be a BB vs. other dealer thing. Comments (10)We used HD Thomasville as well, and Silestone via HD. Do a search for Quartz and you will see the finished kitchen pics. Same thing here - we got numerous quotes, and in our area, we got the best deal via Thomasville. We did use our own contractor for install, as HD contractor prices ate up all other savings we got by buying materials through them. We also got an 18 month same as cash which was the deal maker for a bunch of reasons. Hd contracts out with a local Silestone dealer / installer. These people were amazing! They templated via lazer, a fascinating process, and the install went without a hitch. They were very intentional about making sure all was ok. From what I've read here, I don't think every quartz / stone contractor HD uses is as good as what we've got here...not sure about that one. We got our sink via the fabricator, facets and bs via other vendors. But, we got our stove via HD by doing a cost match. We found the item online via another vendor, cheaper than HD online price, and they honored the cheaper price we found. One of a bunch of ways they helped us lower costs. Oh...and we did purchase our counters and cabs during sales. That made a big difference as well. Sometimes they are HD sales, other times the sales are generated by the product,s manufacturer, I.e., Thomasville and the quartz dealer. The only place I felt HD wasn't a good deal was on their install / labor prices. We did work with a KD at no additional charge. She came to the house, and worked with us for hours. She was very experienced, and taught us things we didn't think about despite getting about 6 other estimates. So, we are happy campers. We love our Thomasville cabinets. Our contractor's friend is a high end home builder. He was here often during install and was impressed with their quality. (I'm not skilled at evaluating such things.) One cab was damaged during transit or at the factory, and we got a no hassle door replacement delivered to our home. We wanted more shelves, thinking they shorted us a few, and they sent us extras. Very responsive. Have fun deciding!...See MoreHome Depot,, Can you get your dream kitchen though them?
Comments (25)Hello again Peggy, Just my two cents here - Because of budget we are DIY'rs. We ended up going with Lowes on their cabinets because we liked the designer so much. We had been to others at the big box stores and were not impressed, but then we ran into some guy that had been doing it for 5 or 6 years in there kitchen dept and loved his job. He listened to what we were trying to achieve and spent oddles of time with us trying to make things work based on what I was trying to accomplish inside my cabinet doors and my space in addition to getting the "look". Had it not been for him we probably would of ended up looking into custom - we are having to manipulate and piecing things together to achieve the look we want which has required alot of patience and frustration along the way. Maybe this is normal with DIY...there were certain elements that I wanted within the cabintry that couldn't be done (feet on my island, panels on the sides of cabinets we built up to look like furniture, roll out trays on our island that they didn't carry for that piece, etc.,) Looking hindsight I would have checked into custom, I've heard it here before as igloochick mentioned that alot of times it can be cheaper! Another problem we ran into is after we ordered and installed our cabinets we went back to add crown molding (we waited on this because at the start of our renovation we bumped our wall out 2' and it gave a slanted ceiling, we wanted to install our cabinets first to see what we would need for pieces with the crown molding - in the meantime our designer from Lowes moved and we had to begin dealing with someone else in that dept which has been a nightmare - that is a story in itself - Kraftmaid says we have to deal with Lowes and go through them for our needs. I'm sure this wouldn't happen often but it is possible - our original designer has tried to help us long distance but Lowes does not want him to handle it out of state since our take backs and pick ups are here....with all that said I wish I would have checked into custom since I knew what I wanted - BUT I am happy with the way things are looking, just thinking the frustration and aggravation wouldn't be as it is AND it could have costed less. BTW, I answered you on my post (I too had a hard time finding my post??!!) Just in case you don't get there - Thank you for all your support! I would love to see pics and hear progress! Comments (3)Disclosure: We installed InnerMost cabinets this past October. When you're choosing between InnerMost and Thomasville, there are a couple of important considerations aside from price. One is just aesthetics - which look do you like? To me Thomasville looks more traditional and InnerMost looks more modern or European or something. If you can go either way comfortably, then how about space issues? For us, this was a deciding factor. Our kitchen is dinky and we needed to maximize every square inch. This photo was from granite install day, but you get the idea: The extra space comes from full access drawers which do not lose the 1.5" behind the face frame in framed cabinetry. The uppers are also 13" vs. 12", which actually makes a difference - things that didn't quite fit in the old cabinets fit fine in these. Long agonizing over exactly what to put where is also helpful regardless of what cabinets you decide on. Price: we paid around $14,000 for ours, including the cost of trim pieces and toe kick trim and such. We have what you can see in the photo, plus there's a 12" utility closet over 2 deep drawers to the left of the fridge space and a 27" full height pantry with roll outs in the bottom half you can just see the edge of on the right. The peninsula has 2 24" 3-drawer units and a 15" 4-drawer unit. On the other side of the dining room (behind the photographer's back) we also have 4 64" glass fronted cabinets. One is 24" deep and the other 3 are 13" deep. We had the glass done locally. The lowers to either side of the stove are not the same. One is 15" and the other 14". We found InnerMost to be extremely flexible on things like that. "Deals": The best I can tell, all the companies have deals pretty much all the time, the specifics just change. InnerMost had a "free" sink base in July and something about glass fronts. We weren't ready to order in July - the planning and considering stage needs to be thorough. When we did order in August, the "deals" changed. We got "free" finished ends (we had many!). The sink base freebie had expired, but the HD guy called them up and they said sure, why not? At that time HD also had a deal going of their own that if you spend x amount, they take y off. It wasn't as good in August as it was in June or July, but it was considerable. The various incentives added up to about $2500, which was good since I was suffering from sticker shock. This may not be a great time of year for the best incentives. "Particle board" - Please! it's "furniture board." Now I'm not chuckling anymore: the stuff they use in good cabinetry of the type you're considering is excellent quality, not to be confused with that sawdusty stuff that you sometimes see in chair seats under the fabric covering. Some will insist that you must have plywood, and others then battle back. We went with the "furniture board" and are satisfied with our choice. Summation: we really like what we got. Given a choice, I'd never have framed kitchen cabinets again. We're happy with the look, the quality, and the function, and would choose to pay the premium again if we had it to do over. Thomasville is also a perfectly valid choice. If you're just as happy with face framed cabinetry, then save the extra $. P.S. I suspect your final bill will exceed what you quoted above. All those little trim bits add up, but you really do need them to finish up the job....See Morekompy
