Installing A/C with a 'non A/C capable' furnace

Long story: We purchased a "fixer upper" house. We did a massive renovation to the house. We had to replace the furnace. It had A/C but the compressor failed. Our HVAC contractor told us it would be $5000 to add A/C. We decided to would hold off for now.

Now that the summer has begun we decided we can't survive without A/C. We assume it would only be $5000 to add A/C but our HVAC contractor said it would be $8000 because the furnace he install wasn't A/C capable so he would have to replace the whole thing!!

First of all is this even real or did this contractor just make this up. Second if it is true is there a way we could avoid replacing the entire furnace?
