Cost of feta...

I went to buy some feta cheese (my normal lower fat version) and it was $9.49 for a mid size tub! I don't remember ever paying more than $6 for a container. Has anyone noticed a price bump? I will try another store but am very surprised by the cost.

That's quite a jump! Try Costco or Trader Joe's for the best prices in cheese.

My grocery log has Atheno's Traditional feta at $8.58 for 8 ounces at my last purchase (February '10).

Wow, this reminds me of last spring when I was making cheese nearly every morning because my husband decided to milk 2 of our beef cows that lost their calves. Kind of like a science project, temperature, cultures,enzymes and timing are very important. (the New England Cheese Supply is awesome) I made my own press with a PVC pipe with holes and made wood disks to fit inside. My weighting were not accurate, but I guess it didn't matter since most of the cheese got eaten before it totally aged anyways. The harder the cheese (Romano or Parmesan) the more pressure._ Quite frankly there's not big money to be saved making your own but it is fun and I learned to appreciate the process. It takes 10 lbs of milk to make 1 lb of cheese and I can buy basic cheddar around here for $4.00 a lb. (homemade yogurt is definitely money saving though 1 gallon milk =1 gallon yogurt) I like the fast mozzarella recipe using citric acid when ever I was in a hurry but I did experiment with some of the other hard cheeses although most did not make it through the aging process because of sampling.

I agree with the above post. I have been homesteading for 5 years and this is my first year growing a market garden so my advise isn't coming from someone with years of experience. We have 3 mini goats, 1 mini donkey and 30 chickens on 4 acres. Half of the land wooded, half is cleared and level. In past years we have grown a large portion of our food in 500 sq/ft of raised garden beds. This spring season we added another 1000 sq/ft and plan to add another 1000 by fall. I sell eggs, chickens(live), seedlings and some produce to friends and neighbors. I would advise you not to diversify too much on such a small parcel of land if you're trying to earn a profit. Choose something that resonates with you and go that route. If the market is there I would suggest selling seedlings and value-added goods that can sometimes be prepared in your home such as pickles. The milk and eggs from 2 goats and 8 chickens may be enough to give extra to friends but not enough to sell. I'm not saying you shouldn't get them, you should! But keep the eggs and milk for you and use their lovely manure to improve your soil. If you are determined to profit off them buy and in-demand breed and sell your kids, fertile eggs and chicks. You could get 2-6 kids a year and sell them from $100-$400 each. I have a breed of chicken that I sell eggs of for $6 each! I, for the life of me, can't find the link now but I recall a very nice article about a family who earned $25k a year from their 1/8 acre urban farm. They sold all their produce off their front porch. I really hope something out of that rambling mess is useful to you! Good luck with everything and keep us posted on your progress!

Like a few here, I'd much rather grocery shop than shop for clothes!!! I'm not a one-stop shopper though. My main shopping is done at the Commissary at MCAS Miramar, once a month. That's what we call "Stock up". Then we shop Wal-Mart's food section (limited; we don't have a Super Wal-Mart yet, and though they're planning one, the town criers are lobbying against it). I shop sales and fresh stuff at Stater Bros and Henry's (like a Wild Oats), but will only go into Vons if they have a really good sale on something I need/want (like the red seedless grapes they have today). Wal-Mart, Stater Bros, Henry's and Vons are all within a half mile of my house so gas is not at issue. If Albertsons has something good, there's one on my way home from work, but normally that's not a stop. To Claudia near Bakersfield: I hear ya. My DH and I used to live in a small town in Arizona with one grocery store. Decent grocery prices were 70 miles away, down in Tucson or in Phoenix. We used to make a once-a-week run to Tucson for a class I had to take, so we'd take a cooler along and stop at the grocery store before class. Also, my daughter broke a bottle of Worcestershire in one of our cars about 6 years ago. Whew! It smelled until the day she wrecked that car! DonnaR/CA

Thanks to every one of you. This simple Greek lunch I started with is turning into a hundred dollar a plate lunch. That's ok, it is my very best friend's 80th birthday and she is so worth more than that!! Neither of us is Greek but used to live close and go out often for Greek Salad and Saganaki and a glass of wine. So, I declared "Greek" for her birthday here. You've cleared things up nicely with advice and priceless pictures. I found Kassari cheese for the Saganaki but not the one with the name I can't begin to spell. I found Greek Thyme honey which costs an arm and a leg. That's for a dessert called Galaktoboureko one brave guest will attempt to make. I've never set an ethnicity to a lunch before but it's turning out to be fun. Now, I'm off to find cocktails mixed with Metaxa. Might as well do it up with fun memories!! My son spent 3 yrs in Greece while in the service but his drink suggestions sound awful. He's the person who told me that a piece (slab) of cheese is often served and also that Saganaki does not come flaming in Greece either. I'm going for authentic here except I do use Romaine in my Greek salads. You were all helpful & I can't wait to do this. Donna

I pick up feta from a Mediterranean market when I'm in Victoria. I like the Macedonian Sheeps Feta and it sells for $1.99 to $2.29 per 100gs. So between $9.00 and $10.00 a pound. It is so much better than the feta that comes in tubs sold in grocery stores.

I just paid $3.18 for a 5oz. tub last Saturday.
Pretty comparable to Ann_T. We're both west coast.

Wow! I guess I am lucky that Chicago has a large Greek/Middle Eastern community. I can go to the market and take my pick of 6 to 9 differant feta's with prices ranging from $8 to $2 per pound. The $2 ones are domestic and pretty darned good.

Sounds like the choices I have at the little Mediterranean market I go to Peppi. They have at least a half dozen different feta cheeses to choose from. You just tell them the size you want and they cut off the piece and package it for you. None are as cheap as $2.00 a pound though. I think the domestic is about $6.50 to $7.00 a pound.

The tubs of feta sold in the grocery store vary. I bought a tub the other day and paid $6.99 for 400g (approximately 14 ounces). It was good in a pinch, but not in the same league as the imported Sheeps feta I buy in Victoria.

The last feta I bought was $2.95# at my favorite cheese factory. That was a couple of weeks ago. Haven't used any of it yet.

I am just looking at my Superstore flyer right now. They have Apetina Feta cheese, 400 g tub, for $6.97. Not sure if it's a sale price or regular. I don't normally buy Feta cheese. The only soft cheese I use is cottage cheese. I have some cheese cultures that I can use to make Feta but I haven't tried it. Is Feta better than cottage cheese i.e. healthier or tastier? Just curious.

I use feta in a couple of different ways - in salads, in greek goodies like spanakopita and "pie" with phyllo, apricots, chicken.

I pay 4oz 113g anywhere $2 to $6 so it can run as much as $24USD per pound. Al, it's much tangier and crumblier than cottage cheese something you mention as star/needed ingredient whereas you probably wouldn't with cottage or ricotta cheese

I checked the container in my refrigerator, President brand, already crumbled, 12 oz. $3.99 at Meijer.

I finally got to the Middle Eastern market today and feta prices were the same as on my last visit. The cheeses are sold in big blocks in liquid and they cut off the size the customer requests. Greek feta was $4.99/lb., Bulgarian feta (my preference) $5.99/lb. and French feta $6.99/lb.

I also experienced feta sticker shock last week. I use it frequently but will be rethinking that for awhile.

I buy feta at a Lebanese market (It's closer to me than the nearest Greek market), and I buy Bulgarian sheep's milk, but I haven't bought any in the past couple of months. DB bought some Greek feta to use on the leftovers he had from our favorite Greek restaurant, but I don't know how much he paid for it. The Bulgarian feta comes in a tub with liquid. The Lebanese market is very close to where Kevin works, and so sometimes he goes there on his lunch hour.
