Kerosene smell in clothes dryer - mystery solved!
Comments (27)Thank you for this post! I couldn't figure out why my clothes smellled like butane . I wasn't sure if my dryer was going bad, if the dryer ventilation was clogged (even though my ventilation dryer pipes were recently installed) or if I had a gas leak. We can't live without a dryer and yet, I was mostly concerned with safety. After reading this post, I realized that my floors were sanded and stained the day (and day after) I ran my dryer. I would have never attributed that terrible smell to the floor chemicals seeping into my dryer without these posts! Its been a few days now and clothes are drying and smelling great. Hope the butane smell washes out of those 2 chemical loads....See MoreWhy isn't my dryer drying my clothes?
Comments (17)Ok! Good thoughts, thank you. So I did already clean the sensor (i.e. that chrome equal-sign item in the drum) with rubbing alcohol. Tumbles fine; had a very clattery quarter in there the other night and I know that's working. :) When I had the dryer vent cleaned and the vent tubing replaced, the dryer vent guy sucked out the machine as well and checked it with clothes running and said I had good air flow. And yes, when I said vent tubing I meant that the previous installer had put in that chintzy mylar looking stuff and I had it replaced with aluminum flex. The vent goes out to the roof (2nd floor) and I think that is because the laundry room is in an awkward corner where the main part of the house meets an ell (pic below; laundry room is in the main part of the house to the left of the dormer). Interior vent pic attached also. I'm going to guess then that it's a coil or temp sensor or voltage problem then. Will report back....See MoreClothes Dryer Help
Comments (1)Probably bad motor ... running in a bind due to bad bearings or an electrical problem. It has thermal overheat protection, will shut off if gets overheated, then run again when cooled sufficiently for the protector to reset. Replacement motors are not overly expensive but that also depends on the source. I find it for $69 at one online source I often use (PartsDr.com) ... $84 at another (AppliancePartsPros.com) ... but SearsParts has it $149. It's worth fixing. However a non-DIYer must also consider the cost of a servicer....See MoreCloths Dryer Exhaust
Comments (3)A clothes dryer duct can be flexible for the transition piece. That is the portion between the dryer and the permanent duct connection at the wall. It must remain exposed and less than 8' long. It is code allowed. The portion in or through the wall, however, must be solid and smooth. The kinds of ducts for the transition piece are as follows: 1. plastic flex which is the worst 2. rigid, don't use the aluminum thinwall duct in the dryer section of the big box store, move an aisle over to the sheetmetal in the HVAC section and pick the 25ga, 26ga, or 30ga duct whichever they carry on hand 3. foil flex which is also crapola 4. semi-rigid aluminum flex is the one if you choose flex If you plan to lower the vent wall cap, that means you'll have to patch the inside and outside walls, not to mention cutting a clean 4 1/8" dia hole. There are some clearances outside you have to meet, like min 36" from any other openings. You can certainly use rigid duct inside instead of the flex - I would suggest only if you can see the duct as you push in the dryer, and can shimmy down there to tighten the screw on the hose clamp. It you are toolless, it also means you'll have to buy some tin snips, and either HVAC tape (foil not duct or "duck") or sealant (no screws into ducts). They do make some fancy dancy kits of plastic magnet couplers and such to supposedly make it easier lining up the dryer, don't know the success of those....See Moreregus_patoff
