Kitchen Demo Weeks 1 and 2...with pics

The kitchen demo started after we received a call from Krafmaid letting us know the cabinets would be delivered on February 10. 3 1/2 weeks seems like a long time until you start with a list of everything that needs to be completed prior to installing cabinets. Yes, we are doing all the work ourselves.

1. Remove old cabinets

2. Remove lots of wallpaper

3. Run new electrical lines for oven, outlets and lights

3. Install ceiling speakers

4. Install wood floor under old cabinets. (We had installed a wood floor 3 years ago and they also need to run under the new cabinets now.)

5. Paint ceiling and walls

6. Install duct for new vent hood

Sink and vent hood have arrived. I also purchased a single induction cooktop to cook meals on. I have to be very creative with meal planning.

Below is where the double oven is moving to.

Kitchen essentials for the next few weeks. Yes, 2 wine glasses are essential!!

The dogs are concerned with all the changes.

My temporary kitchen is set up in the breakfast area.

The desk was the first thing to go.

Like an episode of Lost, my dog Jack wondered where the island went.

Cooktop removed.

No more wallpaper!!

Dinner is cooking after a long weekend.

Luckily no major problems so far. Have found lots of electrical and construction issues that would make Mike Holmes cringe, but we have been able to correct them so far.

I will post more pics over the next few weeks. Phew!!

Wow- impressive demo. We are about to embark on the same path as you doing all of the work ourselves. Did you re-sell your cabinets, donate them or get a dumpster? These are some of the logistics we are trying to work out. We have two small children so we are trying to minimize our time without a kitchen. How long did it take to remove all the cabinets?

I know it looks like a horrible experience, but I loved every minute of our demo. The demo is the worst part. By the time the cabinets come, everything will be ready and it's magical.

We've been without our kitchen for one month and have 2 more to go. My kids are 6 and 3 and we have a new au pair. For me, the hardest part has been living without a sink - I have to trek upstairs to the bathroom to wash fruit, sticky hands, etc. As a result, I've started buying 2 1/2 gallon jugs of water. We use it for drinking, washing small things, etc. I've also made the decision to not even try to cook meat. Instead, I buy prepared meat at Whole Foods - rotisserie chicken, sliced london broil, sliced turkey. I also buy prewashed lettuce and premade salad dressing. I also make a lot of couscous - all I have to do is boil water on the hotplate and then let it sit for 5 minutes - no draining and minimal mess. Although the kids eat on their plastic IKEA plates, the adults all eat on paper. It's not environmentally sound, but it's a lot easier on my nerves. The one nice side effect of all of this, is that I spend a lot less time cooking. After I come home from work, I can have dinner on the table in 15 minutes. On weekends, I'm not busy cooking meals for the following week, but am out doing fun things with the kids. Although I'm excited at the prospect of my nice, new kitchen, not having to do as much house work has been an unexpected luxury. Good Luck.

LoPay - I can so relate. We tore out our kitchen to the studs almost 3 years ago, and just have it functional (but far from done!) in the last 3 weeks. (Reluctant DIY husband and totally unhandy me!) We actually tore it out in stages over the first 3 months, leaving the sink cabinet alone until this past February when it had to go to finish the walls & sub-floor. Anyway, it wasn't long after we started tearing it out that I had second thoughts, and after 2 years I really wished we had never started. We lived in the old kitchen 15 years, but it was the years my 3 girls were growing up and it was a busy and active place. Lots of meals, lots of baking, lots of love. My new kitchen has so much more counter space and I love a lot about it, but it doesn't have the memories. I guess time will help with that as the kids come home for holidays and my grand-kids come and stay. And the same thing will happen in your new kitchen. I wish you the best of luck with your remodel and a life-time of memories from the old and the new.

Wow, thanks for all the kind words! We tried to get some sort of reaction out of our kids and the workers but no one was saying much ;-) I should have known I could count on gardenweb! linb007, the floors are common 1 and 2 random width (3-5-7) american black walnut. I fell in love with some I saw at 32 dollars a sq foot (of course) and hunted them like prey until I found them for less than a quarter of that. We got them from Blackford & Sons out of Tennessee, unfinished with hand scrapped edges. My contact there is Luke Blackford. They are sweethearts there. I can send you his email if you want. kitchenkrazed, I am going to post this seperately (cabinet issue), I need the GW advice! The firm is a very reputable firm, HOWEVER, our designer left a week before we placed the order. So we are in a sort of odd situation and they never gave us a list of exact cabinets (I wasnt liking that but that is how they said it worked), they gave us 100 drawings and elevations and the cabinet type and finish, etc. but not a detailed BOM. So we are discussing it with them right now but I dont like that I dont have my original designer to clearly state that this is not what we discussed. honorbilkit, yes, we are surprised to find out that we are doing ok without the first floor. Esp since we always say the house is too small for us (we love our neighborhood though). My 6 year old said today he doesnt want to move back into the first floor. I thought he liked the closeness of all of us. Turns out he liked being able to watch TV while eating (basement set up, not allowed in real life upstairs). Rascal. Dinalo, yes that is stenciling, or as we like to say: entertainment for the onsite crew. Its one of my "Projects" where i experiment and stress out my husband. We had rich blue walls (faux sky) before so to cover it, I laid a TON of primer and ceiling white, and I COULD STILL SEE THE BLUE! So then I lugged 50 lbs of joint compound in (this is where the workers perked up wondering what the heck I was up to) and slathered it on. Then I color washed it with acrylics. Then I did a dimensional damask stencil with some of the bottom metallic paint mixed in. Since this photo I have added metallic highlighting to match under chair rail and then started distressed it with sandpaper (not done) b/c my highlighting was too "new" looking. Its like an 18 layer wall. I think I need to be committed if I make any starts towards 19. It's been sort of fun, Ive been cranking the ipod and putting movies on for the kids, but I think most people could skip 80% of my steps and get a similar effect! Lol.

Update this week. Things are progressing super quick! Floor is tiled (missed taking a full pic before they covered it up). Vent is redone with rigid venting and the ceiling re-patched and painted (where they didn't repatch) Cabinets are starting to go in as we have a hard deadline for counter measuring on Thursday. I passed my first test as a self designed/ordered kitchen planner, and the wall of cabinets fit as planned to within a 1/8 of an inch extra (which i attribute to going from plaster walls to drywall). My GC is not thrilled with the more complicated than usual set up (varying depth cabinets, and some needing to be pulled away from the wall (since I was saving money and not getting 30" deep cabinets). However, he is being calm and just going with it, amazing what the sight of an anxious pregnant woman does to a man. Pictures: Outside brick work as requested. See if you can tell the difference between original 1920, bad remodel about 15 years ago and now. Cabinets are going up! Top will be flat and crown molding, I wasn't sure how much ceiling space we would have so went a little conservative on the cabinet sizes (34 bottom and 15 top). Note that it'll all be off center but that is very much on purpose. Tiny sliver of the floor showing, butting to the original hardwood. It's already grouted, GC mixed 3 colors of grout to get it the perfect dirt color. I love the floor (Stax Tortola) it's a great combo of grey, brown and tiny bit of white and will pull the brown from the counter.

We have friends who wanted some of the old cabinets. They came by last week to pick them up. They wanted them for their basement. The rest will be donated to Habitat for Humanity Restore.

Removal of the cabinets was pretty easy. We had everything out within a week. We did get to know our electrical panel pretty well over the week as we removed the oven, cooktop, dishwasher and disposal. I am planning on 8-10 weeks without my kitchen. After the cabinets go in the granite countertops will need to be measured, slab picked out and installed. After that the backsplash tile will be installed. Once that is done I should be able to start cooking again!!

haha, love the lost reverence!

And with that 3 dog bowl setup, can your dogs eat that close to each other and not steal each others food? Impressive.

I'll be following your progress- I just spent the weekend emptying my kitchen and setting up our temp kitchen. We are also doing all the work ourselves, except the granite. I anticipate within 1-2 weeks we are going to have our dumpster and start major demolition. Our cabinets are too beat to donate. I think our dog will avoid the mess, but I'm sure our cats will want to be in the thick of it! I don't know how I'm going to keep them out. Good luck! And keep the pics coming...

rocketmomkd, I have two full-grown kittens who are unruly and into everything. Plus they are indoor-only so I can't just toss them outside. Whenever there's a worker here, I put them in my guest bedroom with food, water, litterbox. Sometimes they cry to be let out, but I ignore them. It would be crazy to have them loose in the house. Of course, once everyone's gone, they love to explore. Their favorite part of the reno is cabinets without doors and drawers, which is like spelunking to them.

linelle- my main concern if for when the dry wall is down. I do have a spare bedroom, so I guess I can have them hang up there with all their supplies. But that will mean moving my son's lizard back into his room. Can't have the kitties trying to get into the lizard cage!

Weeee what fun!

(I do have to say, though, who ever did that wallpaper...impressive! It's hard to hang stripes and get them perfect!)
