Help with hard water, less chemicals, FS & Detergents?

I was wondering if anyone with very hard water and an HE washer/dryer has found an inexpensive and natural way to clean and soften their laundry. I have been reading other posts about baking soda, washing soda, borax and vinegar...I am on info overload and would like some specific suggestions. My husband does like scent in his clothes so I am torn there also. I have gone all natural/organic in our food due to my son's sensitivities and would like to carry that into the rest of the house. However, I am finding that it is very expensive to do that. We live in Arizona and drying outside is out of the question because of small yard space and amount of dust in the air. Also, my clear glass shower doors are a mess. I cannot keep the hard water build up at bay...I have given up. I have spent so much money on harsh chemicals that do not work. Finally found solution for mineral toilet ring...thanks to another forum...pumice stone...just can't use that on the glass. Thanks a bunch!
