What would you do? Will this look odd?

Well the full scale remodel is off. After I placed the order but before I confirmed it, the truck broke down and DH told me we must fix the driveway which will cost 5k. With kids in college and the economy, I just can't justify or stomach a 20-30K remodel right now. So I cancelled the order. :(

My next brainstorm is a mini facelift. Paint the existing cabinets the color of white chocolate, replace cabs in the island (which holds my range) with a cognac color, replace a tall pantry on an end run (I hate it - closes in kitchen)with uppers/lowers also in cognac, new wilson art counters and hardware. I have several design dilemma's but I'll start with the island.

ISLAND DILEMMA: total island top possible is 72". Stove will take 30". Most useful cabs for me to add are a 30" 3 drawer on the right of stove and a 9" open end bookcase on left of stove. This also gives me a good amount of uninterupted counter on the right for prepping. This will make the stove off center. WILL THIS LOOK ODD?

Also, can I have full overlay doors (and the other two new ones but that's a nother dilemma) on the island when the other doors are standard overlay?

I've seen plenty of islands with the cooktop off-center... I don't think it looks odd at all!!
Your ideas sound great, and a lot less than a full remodel!

I wouldn't hesitate to use full overlay doors on the island. Have my doubts about changing overlay style & color w/ addt'l cabs in a run, though. But there are no absolutes. (How wide is the pantry you're replacing & can you do the hutch look?) As usual, pictures help. :)

I'm so sorry to hear your husband is battling this awful disease. Several years ago, the father of my daughter's friend was diagnosed with the same cancer. He is currently in remission! Coincidentally (or maybe not), I mentioned to a friend we have in common that he had been diagnosed (they had been neighbors but my friend had moved). My friend then told me that another of their neighbors had died from the same cancer not long b/f the father of my daughter's friend was diagnosed which really troubled her as she was concerned there may have been an environmental link b/w the two. While I have no words of advice as to how you should proceed, I thought of you the other day when I saw this story on the local news. Perhaps if you have a similar investigative team at your news station, they would look into it. Police Station Cancer Cluster Regardless of whether you pursue that, I wish your husband a speedy recovery and pray he has a good prognosis. The father of my daughter's friend is doing very well.

It’s an open loft so there will be light regardless. The little window faces west, no view out that window except the roof. I think I’ll just ignore it to start. To be honest I’m not sure the room will get slept in much. The two beds are antiques inherited from my husband’s grandmother. They are an odd size at 30” wide by 78” long. So only really comfortable for kids. However, I love them and have always wanted a spot to use them. My kids are grown and we are years away from grandchildren I think. It is a nice spot for a nap or to read, I sit up there with my iPad and the little dogs love the little beds lol. Once my daughter settles down and has her own place they are promised to her. In the meantime I’m going to enjoy them.

Thank you Aurora and Catt. We're definitely going to keep the washer and dryer upstairs! I'm not sure we can recess the plumbing with our budget. It's a brick home. I'll check though. The space has a back door (in pic) that leads to the backyard, so I guess we could identify this as a mudroom/laundry room with some adjustments. We are replacing the countertop with the same granite that's going in the kitchen remodel for continuity. You've all been so helpful! I sincerely appreciate everyone's input!

Key phrase -- "most useful cabs for me to add are ..." It won't look odd to be off center. Regarding island doors, I like it when the island looks like a separate piece -- different color, different doorstyle -- so full overlay doors would be fine. I like cilantro's idea of doing a hutch look with the old pantry area. Use glass doors on top, match the new island instead of the old cabinets.

Thank you all. I'm feeling better about it being off center.

Yes, I do plan to make the end piece look like a hutch. that's the next thing i'll think about. I'm trying to figure out how to deal with the crown of the old in white chocolate abutting the new in cognac. One option is to make the new upper 42" with 6" above the old and 6" below so the crowns and light rail don't intersect.

I like the idea of changing the color and the height of the hutch cabinets from those of the rest of the kitchen. This sounds like a very wise plan! Good luck!
