140-year-old house needs A/C in upstate NY...Lennox, Bryant, or ?

Gardenweb has been so great for all of our remodeling in our old home, I thought I'd check for A/C!

140-year old two-story farmhouse, 3100sf, looking to put A/C in the attic for cooling on the second floor only. Doesn't have any A/C right now--forced hot-water in old giant radiators.

Getting four quotes from local companies--

Family Danz (Bryant and Payne)

D.A. Bennett (Lennox)

Choice (Carrier and Trane)

Myers Brothers (Trane)

So far, we've gotten two quotes--upstairs is technically 1600 sf, and they're oversizing it to 2000sf so some of the cool air will drop down both stairwells, since we're not getting A/C on first floor.

So far, Lennox XC21 system would be $9,000. Really liked the guy a lot and knows old houses, but not reading great reviews on Lennox.

Bryant 186B with 30K BTUH and SEER rating of 16 was quoted at $11,701.

Waiting for estimate on a Trane system and one other company which seems to carry both Trane and Carrier from their website specs.

Any opinions? I know NOTHING about these brands and I'm a research-aholic, so this really bothers me to no end!!! How much should a job like this cost? Giant walk-up unfinished attic, so access is not an issue but no duct-work in place whatsoever.
