What am I doing wrong .....socks.....

Hi everyone ,

I am doing my first pair of socks , a basis rib then knit , yarn on 3 needles , working with the forth. When I move from one needle to another I am getting a large space . My friend who is teaching me said to work the first stitch under the needle I just finished and pull it tight before I put that needle under the two I am working with. I have but it is coming out the same way.....very frustrating......help!!!! Kareen

That is called a ladder, and it happens to nearly everyone when they begin to knit socks for the first time or two. Your friend is right in telling you to tug a bit on the first stitch after you knit it, but if it is still happening to you, then you may need to tug on the next stitch as well, and maybe even the next stitch. Or, you can try knitting the socks on two circulars. This has been a great help to me in eliminating ladders. Also, don't worry too much if you have just a little space. After washing, that often disappears. Good luck.

Yes Donna, it looks like a ladder and one part looks like the ladder lost its rung!LOL
I do knit the " throw the yarn " method....not sure if that adds to the problem. Thanks for your quick response. Kareen

I have a grow light bulb in a floor lamp with an adjustable arm. It's over several plants and I'm never quit sure how long to leave it on or exactly where to point it. Right now I have it pointed at the white wall above and behind the plants figuring the light will will reflect and disseminate indirectly onto the plants. I leave it on only a few hours because they also get a very small amount of indirect, low light from and; window across the room and the fluorescent lights in the next room. I do wonder if the temperature is part of my problem with her and also my ivies, perhaps. Water could also be associated, I have heard that tap water left sitting at room temp awhile before watering clears the chemicals. I store my water in closed milk cartons a good while before use. I dunno if that makes any difference or not. ~ken_adrian... You said, "grow lights should be 2 to 4 inches"... What did you mean by that? 2-4 inch bulbs? 2-4 inches over plant? That is not the permanent position. I didn't post my zone because all my plants are indoor, but I live in VA. Thanks everyone for the advice and welcomes. I will check out that site, Carol23.

Tracy - just to add a bit - A. some plants are designed to sucker - they are trailers and should be grown multicrowned B. Some plants have the tendency to sucker when they are young - and if with a help of Fred's technique you keep removing the suckers as early as possible until they mature - you are home free. C. Some plants will sucker in your conditions no matter what - pass them to somebody else - very possibly they will behave better. D. All plants sucker when stressed - exactly as Fred explained. Try to baby them a bit - and if it doesn't help - you can call them category C - and get rid of them. TGIF Irina

Gauge is an important part of knitting if you want the garment to fit properly. If the needle suggested for the yarn does not give you the necessary gauge go up or down in size until you find the correct size. Whatever needle size gives you the proper gauge is the correct one for you to use. Gauge is determined by your knitting tension. The listed ball band gauge is based on a general gauge. As for garments knitted in the round you must gauge in the round. Knitting flat and knitting in the round can produce a different gauge. To gauge in the round cast on required stitches on a double point needle then knit a row, do not turn. Carry your yarn to the beginning of the row again and knit another row. This will leave long strands of yarn that join the swatch. Hope this helps.

I really want blooms! What am I doing wrong?

East or west exposure will net blooms for most of them EVENTUALLY. Most of mine grow on the east side, close to the window, and most of the mature ones bloom. There are some exceptions. But I will say that pubicalyx 'Pink Silver' (which I think is what you have there) is one that has always taken many years to bring to bloom for me, AND once it blooms, it's very stingy. I think a summer outside might be helpful, but I, too, am careful what I put out. Two kinds of Hoyas go out - the ones that aren't doing too hot (in hopes of the fresh air and sunshine making a difference) and those that are duplicates (as I won't risk my mother plants.) But I do have two out on my covered front porch that I keep a close eye on - pubicalyx 'Red Buttons' is one, and I must say it blooms like crazy all summer long. The leaves look less than spectacular (fairly washed out), but it does bloom... Use a bloom booster fertilizer, like Ferti-Lome. The number on it are 9-58-8. THAT gives them a real boost! Kareen, you might just count your stitches to make sure that you haven't dropped a stitch as well. I don't mean to say that you NEED to change your method, but if it is comfortable for you, maybe you could try picking instead. You could hold the yarn with a little tighter tension (at least for the first few stitches on each needle) by squeezing the crook of your little finger with the yarn in that crook.

Besides tugging more tightly on the 1st and second stitches, you can try shifting the 1st stitch on each needle: knit 1 or two extra stitches off the next needle before you change needles. Also knit with 4 needles instead of 3; there'll be less tension on the stitches. Some knitters reduce ladders by starting each round by making sure the new needle is on top of the previous one while others do the opposite. Experiment to see what works better. As Donna said, that the ladders usually disappear after a couple of washings.

I continuously move a stitch from one needle to the next, so that the site where the ladder would be is constantly changing...that is, not the same stitches...it changes each time I move one stitch to the next needle.

definitely consider knitting on 4 needles. it makes doing
a 'tube' like a sock so much easier. also mving the stitches from needle to needle help keep the fabric you create smooth. My favorite sock pattern has 12 stitches on 4 needles (48 stitches total) i knit 13 sticthes on to my free needle as i work my way around, by knitting a stitch off the next needle

Not sure I understand about adding stitches and moving the stitch .I crochet a lot more than I knit ....novice is the word for me. Thanks everyone for your help, I will keep at it. Kareen
