evaporator coil-rip off or deal??

i had my evaporator coil checked for leaks and the technician found a small to medium leak detected and gave me an outrageous bill to have the coil replaced. he had filled the unit up with freon to test first of all ($200). test ($75) service call($89).if i had him repair the unit now,the service call would be taken off but the rest will be added again to my next bill also ($1400.00).does that sound like in the ball park or is it a rip off deal?? if i find the leak, can i repair it with some type material or would it be useless or is it something i could change out on my own and then have someone re-fill it?? just wondering...
